You're right, I was thinking of the operations backwards. The absolute value function is essentially equivalent to squaring a number and then taking the square root of the result, not the other way around.
Fine then, not owning guns is irresponsible and people who don't own guns don't care about their families. Great message, you must be a hoot at parties.
I would guess that the OP's intention was to point out that in order for squaring a number to be the inverse of taking it's square root, the result of doing both would be the number 1. For example, 1/2 is the inverse of 2 because 1/2 * 2 = 1. The result of taking the square root of a number and then squaring it will be the absolute value of the original number.
Sorry to double reply, but I just noticed that you were not replying to my post. The GP was at -1 and I didn't see it. I did stop to wonder when I had mentioned legal precedent...
I believe, and no I don't have a study or anything to back it up, that I am more likely to come through a robbery of my apartment unscathed without a weapon. It seems obvious to me that the likelihood of at least one life ending increases with every gun that is added to a situation. I will gladly trade all of my possessions for my life. I can already hear the counter argument from gun owners. I know I'm basically giving open license to anyone with a gun to rob me. It hasn't happened to me yet, and it never happened to my family as we moved from Brooklyn to Jersey City and back to Brooklyn. I respect your desire to own a weapon, respect my desire not to. We can both enjoy our freedoms in our own way without the need to accuse each other of not caring about our families.
Wait just a god damn minute. I tried to defend the EFF and you're accusing me of siding against them. I was replying to a post claiming the EFF tried to cover up defeats by pointing out that the Wikipedia article includes defeats as well as victories. [insert you're an asshole analogy here]
Wait a god damn second... being illegal isn't being regulated? Huh? What the fuck are you talking about? The rest of your post I agree with, but your first point about illegal != regulated is asinine. Also, it's mariJuana, not mariHuana as the ignorant Henry Aslinger spelled it during his reign of idiocy.
I'll tell this to you like I tell it to every other gun nut. I refuse to have a gun in my apartment in Baltimore because having a gun would make me less safe. Care to tell me how Baltimore is less dangerous than Arizona?
I'll admit I'm fuckin' wasted right now... but I counted exactly ten iPods and no Zunes on the page you linked. So why should the OP be concerned that his drinking, if he was even drinking, was causing a problem?
You're right, people like those pictured in the video give cops and other LEOs(i guess that means law enforcement officers) a bad name. Thank you for doing your part to fix it. The police badge should be a badge of honor, but scum like this make that shield glisten less every time they abuse their power.
This is irrelevant to the current discussion, but speaking as a "criminal," I'm intrigued by the reasonable and decently voiced opinions in your post. I've been disillusioned, to say the least, by the criminal justice system as I see it. You posted AC, so I don't have a way to contact you directly, but I would treasure the opportunity to speak with a police officer who takes his job as seriously as you obviously do. I'd like to pick your brain about a number of subjects, I've always wanted to start an open conversation with an honest police officer. The contact info I just updated should be live, drop me a line sometime if you ever want to have a conversation with someone who views law enforcement as a necessary evil.
Hey, idiot... being assaulted with a taser IS violence. I dare you, DARE YOU, to be assaulted with one and, within the amount of time the cops gave this kid, get up and say you were not just the victim of violence.
I absolutely, positively DO NOT CARE what his attitude was. He was dead weight on the ground and still being tasered. Even if he just killed the entire family of every officer in the department, he was down. Cuff him, bring him in, lock him up, try him, whatever, you're just not allowed to keep tasing him. Is it really that hard?
... or, as you so carefully made sure not to point out, they could have carried him out of the library in handcuffs, instead of torturing him in front of a crowd that was videotaping the event. Then again, that option doesn't include torturing a brown person. The cops probably just thought GW would disapprove if they didn't "stay the course."
I'm sorry, apparently my sarcasm detector is broken. Is "wobulation" an actual term? Normally, I'd be well into making fun of it by now... I just have this nagging feeling that I might be wrong. Anyway... so... "wobulation"?
This post is clearly complete BS. I contend that A) you've never even seen a dual core 3.0 ghz machine and B) this post is a troll that I am feeding, like an idiot. Anyway, to any one on/. who is still taken in by these poorly constructed lies... Linux requires more processing power than your toaster can provide, and Windows, according to most computer users, does not turn every computer into a spam and pornography delivering machine, unless so desired. This has been a public service announcement, that "The more you know" song should play now. It won't though, probably because of Windows, or racism, or Nazis, oh wait.... I got it.... it was the Arabs. Fucking towelheads stopping the "THe more you know" music... Is this the kind of country we want to live in ????!!!!
If you think that the recording industry represents an economic interest that the USA would consider going to war for YOU are fooling YOURself. Now seriously, ease up on the hyperbole.
I see the legality as pretty much a moot point. How much of that ".9-.25/song" is the artist seeing? The answer is most likely none. In that case, why is it better than paying nothing? No thanks, I'll stick to seeing bands live and buying CDs at the show. P2P provides the rest.
I'm a Moonbat I'm a Moonbat I'm a Moonbat... some lesser slashdotters... most moonbats... spoiled child... you're[sic] intellectual capacity can't handle anything more and you're too lazy to find out... some moonbat... if you can handle that... you have my pity... don't have the intelligence... post your comments at Yahooligans... moonbats
This is why I resorted to four letter words. If you wished to have a civilized discussion, maybe, just maybe, calling the other side of the debate "moonbats" was not the way to go. I don't know, it could be my inferior public school education, but I've come to expect that, when I begin a discussion with name calling, the discussion will come to be defined by it. Perhaps in your superior private schools they teach you that you're always right. It certainly appears that you believe it to be true, so, I repeat, fuck you and your obnoxious tactics. Here's a thought, I did look it up, and, as a separate, but still rational, human being, I came to a different conclusion than you based on the different experiences I've had in my life. As to your comment about the original discussion, please explain what you've contributed to it, as all I can see is that idiotic word over and over again. Reread your comments and explain to me why you think you deserved a civilized reply. BTW, is it that my intellectual capacity is too low or that I'm too lazy, Mr. Smarter than Everyone? If I'm so stupid, why bother looking it up?
Contempt breeds contempt, it's a simple concept, really. I bet you could understand it if it was working against me. Don't expect respect when you've given none.
Now repeat after me: I will not call the kettle black I will not call the kettle black I will not call the kettle black. God that's an annoying device, I bet the guy that I learned it from was just trying to ruffle my feathers and make himself feel smarter than me. He must have been educated in one of those fancy private schools. Golly jeepers gosh, I can't hardly grasp the high-falootin' ideers dem folks bandy about, what wit my small town cuntry larnin' and the stick whittlin' my skewl teachers just cain't seem to get in my head. Us simple folk just ain't got no need for big city words like moonbat. Best get back to feedin dem hogs and leave the city folk to do the talkin', wouldn't want to get in the way of civilicized discussin' betwixt high-minded gents such as yerself. Oh wait, sorry, I forgot, I am educated and you are a bastard.
Now see, did that contribute anything to the discussion? No, but at least I'm not gonna claim it did. There, now you understand how contempt can breed contempt. Next time you engage in a discussion and use the word moonbat, you will know why you can expect to have epithets hurled back at you. Maybe then you can have the "high-brow discussion of the issues of the day" you claim to desire. Until then, fuck you you stupid fucking fuckwit, dumb twat, holier-than-thou, shit-flinging waste of perfectly good carbon. You have been spewing hypocrisy from every orifice, to paraphrase Rush Limbaugh, another great Republican apologist who is completely unwilling to live by his own bullshit. There, now you've got something you can use against me instead of having to answer to your own shortcomings, you can thank me later. See you in Hell.
Screw nuance. In my mind, the press is anyone, reporting anything, to anyone, anywhere. Unless their goal is to tell lies in order to hurt some person or institution, it should be protected. Publishing secrets should never be a crime, although releasing them may be, if you've agreed not to. The same goes for trade secrets. If you signed an NDA, you can't legally release them, but the person to whom you release them is not bound by that agreement.

Seconded. In fact, that's quite possibly the best point brought up the whole discussion.

Ding dong the bitch is dead
Which bitch?
The thieving bitch
Ding dong the thieving bitch is dead
Is it hard being that angry and closed-minded, or does it come naturally?

Whoops... Thanks for the correction. That would have been a much, much shittier video.
