Wow, thanks for enlightening me to the wonderful world of connectivity available to me. If this was a sampling of that, keep it. I'll keep sitting out on my porch chatting with my neighbors because they're good people, even if we don't share many similar interests beyond a couple of beers and some musings about the day. Seriously, man. You're posting on Slashdot and you don't understand that it's possible to have more than one source of human contact, that you can be friendly to those who happen to live close to you as well as those who know through some other sort of social connection? I guess I'm just old-fashioned, but I start to feel uncomfortable and disconnected when I don't know the people in my neighborhood. BTW, I never said "meet your neighbors" so don't put it in quotes and pretend like I did. You're one of those people who gets flustered when someone you don't know has the audacity to say something to you that requires a response, aren't you?

If I am on public land I do not have the right not to be watched. If I did the red light camera ticket I got last year would be a blatant violation of that right. I would also note that I am not allowed to carry a weapon, I am not allowed to detain people for questioning, and my power to affect an arrest even if I have witnessed a crime is dubious at best. Nor do I have the right to pull a person over because I misunderstand a change in another states law that makes their vehicle appear to be out of inspection and then issue them a ticket for taking over 30 seconds to produce their registration, forcing them to decide whether to bother going to court for a $40 ticket that could end up costing twice that if they are still found guilty, but I digress. You are so wrong it hurts. I spent 3 of my years in college doing audio/visual tech support. We got ridiculous calls from professors in EVERY field. Even the good professors didn't always care about finding the best tool for the job so long as they could get the job done quickly so that they could move on to the next one. I had a bioinformatics professor who would write his journal articles in Word and would produce graphs in Excel, edit the graph image in Powerpoint, use print screen to bring the image into paint, and copy it into his Word document. He could program in several languages and was reasonably savvy with Linux, but this was the tool he found and it got the job done. Other professors who were well respected in their field just could not be bothered to care about computers. They used whatever their grad students told them would work. As for the journals comment, you must be more specific. Most professors I've spoken to despise the traditional system of extremely overpriced and under-reviewed journals that they must, in some cases, actually pay to get into. That said, those in the know have a good deal of respect for some of the newer open access journals. I was told more than once that if I am ever to publish I should strive to be published in an open journal and make an effort to cite other open journals in my research.

Second, calling your audience "complete fools" and "total idiots" generally causes them to regard you as such. It certainly did so to me, even if I do agree with your main points. Consider your audience. Respect gets respect. Notice how annoyed you got with me when I criticized your schooling? That's what anyone who read your post felt when you insulted them. Once insulted, they were no longer clearly thinking about the information presented to them, regardless of its quality, or lack thereof. I hope that you, not being such a "total idiot," will not fall into the same trap.

Third, you are allowed to use whitespace for formatting purposes. Long blocks of unformatted text present a challenge to the reader. Notice how my list is clearly delineated and easily readable while your's is not? That is because I've used blank lines to help the reader interpret what I'm trying to say in a logical fashion. Indentation would also be acceptable.

Follow these three bits of advice and you will find people listening a lot more intently to what you have to say. That is, if you do indeed have something to say.

Tell her to go to a bar where the owner has banned smoking or quit her bitching. If there is a market for it like you say, then some enterprising American must cater to it. If there is not, then why should they be forced to? The free market is a powerful thing if people are willing to vote with their dollars instead of whining about the smoke when they knew it was gonna be there. Hint #2: Will a family member who gave up smoking years ago and no longer has to suffer the smoky atmosphere he wanted to leave behind every time he goes out for a drink have his freedom restricted?

See above, go to a bar where smoking isn't allowed. If one does not exist either there is no market for it or the market is wide open. Since there is clearly a market for it I suggest your friend start a non-smoking bar or quit whining. Hint #3: Will the many non-smokers who will now be able to take work in the hospitality trade without risking their own health to do it have their freedom restricted?

Sorry, some jobs have risks and health hazards. That's America, at least the America I love. You got the freedom to hurt yourself. You don't get to walk into a smoke filled bar knowing it was going to be filled with smoke and then whine because you have to breathe it. I am not a smoker, I never was one, I never will be. I have no problem finding bars in my area that do not allow smoking, or at least contain it to a completely separate room. I patronize those businesses because I respect their decision to stop smoking in their business and because I take responsibility for my own health. The government nanny doesn't have to step in and hold my hand and tell me what's right, and big brother sure as hell needs to stop telling bar owners legal activities they can and can't allow on their own private property.
