Okay, after thinking about this the biggest downside I see to using this for offsite backups is that with the encrypted image you will have to send the entire image over the net each time it's backed up since you can't to an incremental backup.
I like the idea of the encrypted sparse image. I just switched to OS X and hadn't read about that yet. I have a linux server that I'm using as NAS and I could pretty easily do a encrypted image on the share from my mac and rsync that directory from the server to Dreamhost. That will give me NAS, and offsite (encrypted) backup.
Re: Dreamhost
And what happens when your Dreamhost account is hacked (or someone else's on the same server) and you either lose your data or it's copied?
I'm running into the same problem running NXServer on a comcast account. NXServer sends everything over ssh and I've been having lost connections over the last couple of weeks. Is there a way around this with NX?
And that's why Ubuntu loses. I work on large image and video files under windows (same box) all day long with no problem. Weird things happen in Linux. Heck, I could install SUSE and the crashes could stop. I am running system monitor on the taskbar (it crashes at login but I can tell it to start again) and the temps are all good.
Oh yeah, mod me down because I'm having issues with Ubuntu and instead of simply hitting the reset button, I talk about it...
I installed Ubuntu 7.04 on a machine running windows (very nicely) and I get crashes in firfox, moving documents between SATA drives, using F-spot, remote sessions with NXServer, and other random times. I don't mean nice crashes either. These crashes kill responses to any input be they keyboard, mouse, video, ssh, telnet, etc.
Sorry, Linux doesn't "just work"...
Boo fracking hoo...
Ubuntu works, my 3d graphics card works, I can get DVDs and MP3s to work, it just works. I don't give a rat's ass about free or open source software, I just want what I have to work. I use Windows where it works and Linux where it works. I don't use Linux because I want to make any statement or wave a banner.
You would need to keep good records to show that you didn't "make" money on the sale. In your case I would think you could actually report a loss of $100 and that would reduce your taxable income. Keep in mind that I'm not a tax expert or even a tax newbie...
come on, you're saying that in 1 friggen hour, while I'm downloading SP2 on a new XP box that I'm going to be "infected?" Sounds a little far fetched to me...
I just want space ships, laser beams, women with big boobs, evil aliens (even better if they have big boobs and laser beams), and crap blowing up! I don't care for the romance that is NOW in Battle Star Galactica. Blow something up!!!
I unplug the network cable and plug the USB cable from my sprint ppc-6700 in and start "Internet Sharing" on the phone. I then fire up freenx and I'm good to go.
2 things keep me from removing my windows partition.
1. Photoshop (I'm a pro photographer and need a monitor/scanner/large format printer color matched process.
2. Exchange Server. I use 1and1.com for my exchange server hosting so my phone (ppc-6700) can be used for calendar, tasks, contacts, etc. I use Outlook at home and the office and everything keeps in sync very nicely. 1and1.com does not support Exchange connector and I've tried everything to get it to connect.
I'm with dreamhost too and I'm trying to figure out the best/secure way to do this. Right now I have a mix of windows and linux machines backing up through FTP. I have windows connected using netdrive so the dreamhost server can be mapped as a drive.
I'm concerned with security though. As I have all my documents, including financial software data, being backed up, how safe is this? Is ftp okay for this?
My guess is that if this were sold as the new iPod without the phone feature but still the connectivity and $100 less, it would be "the next HOT thing".
Look at this as a nice connected iPod with a phone thrown in...
I've been carrying a PPC-6700 (with qwerty keyboard) for almost a year. From what I've seen, I can do everything the iPhone does. Granted, mine is thicker but still...
Linux had nothing to do with the decline. The economy along with the failure that was Vista is what led to the (minor) decline.

I would love to know where you're buying new (not recertified/refurbished) Seagate 500G drives!
How are you transferring the files to Dreamhost? Are you mounting a dreamhost folder in OS X?

What is this "iPhone" that you speak of???

I would think that a Windows terminal server (Citrix?) would help in some of those situations...

This project is old. Something like 7-years old. So old that this guy has more than likely had sex (with a girl) by now...
Wow, open your door, go outside, meet people (maybe the opposite sex), and live!
How about the ]Phone? Then the next generation could be the ][Phone.

It only has to happen to you once to suck big time...
#2 should be easy for the /. community...
