    • Various versions of the XP kernel

There has been some tweaking of the kernel for market positioning and bug fixes, but no other major architectual overhauls. Everything else has been modifications to the window manger which is the equivilent to a new KDE or Gnome version. Let's not forget that M$ is impoverished comared to Linux.

Some decades-old study that somehow could be interpreted as "discrediting" souce-code mods, perhaps? I don't even have a guess.

Obviously you've missed the latest paradigm: Extra Source Protection (ESP). In this new paradigm, you write the code then deploy it, from then on you simply patch the object code. The beauty of this paradigm is that it works equally well with open or closed source software. Got a problem with Windows(tm)? No problem, patch the binaries!

One other problem: Lots of people mistrust M$. This would be the end the primacy of google searches. It would just give rise to a new and different search engine.

Plug the device into any RJ11 jack. Put a high gain antenna in the attic. Whenever a cell phone is in the craddle, the device behaves much like a PBX. When a POTS phone is picked up, the device would issue a dial-tone. Seems to me the biggest trick would be detecting the difference between 7 and 10 digit numbers.

This would allow cellular providers to put the final nail in the POTS coffin.
