My folks (and myself) are lifelong Dems. When I flag the kinds of things Obama is doing that replicate W's actions as they relate to loss of personal freedom and how they need to challenge Obama's actions they seem unconcerned. Their response is always that the items I deem important - liberty, protection from unreasonable search and seizure, etc - are different than the ones of importance to them - education, health care, etc. Not sure why they don't understand the critical nature of both sets.
I even volunteered to assist in explaining technological things. They were good enough to send me a nice form letter thanking me for contacting them. Of course, they also didn't like my suggestion that they be forced to wear NASCAR-like suits that have patches for all of their "sponsors." Go figure...
I all seriousness, I understand the folks who don't believe in global warming. I don't understand how they reach their conclusions, but what I guess I can't wrap my head around is how staunch they seem to be that global warming is absolutely not possible. It seems like they're vehemently trying to prove a negative instead of considering that even if all of the components of global warming aren't valid, there are parts that are worth considering as being problems that need to be resolved.
A ton of years ago I spoke in front of the magazine publishers' association of America (or something similar. I forget the exact name). They asked about digital versions of subscription publications. I told them that (at the time) WSJ and Playboy were doing quite well online with Playboy being so successful they were able to cut back on their print run. Then I paused and without thinking said, "Playboy.com. The sound of one hand typing." Half of them laughed and half looked reallllllly uncomfortable.
Just got our Roku and really like it. Wish it had an OTA option and some sort of (even limited) DVR functionality. While I'm capable of building a home media box, I'd really prefer not to.
We all guessed it was the case. Now someone has proven it. The disgusting thing is he's allowed to do it. No one will investigate it. No one will, when the vote comes to the floor, say anything like, "I'd like to point out the less-than-honorable douche bag is a paid shill. I'd like to, but it wouldn't really narrow it down in this once-distinguished chamber, would it?" No one did anything about Meredith Attwell Baker; what she did was legal but equally disgusting. Again, let me say... so what? And all of the talk about voting for so-and-so because he's pro-[insert thing you agree with] or against [insert something you disagree with] makes zero difference. Change the lobby rules or it doesn't matter for whom you for vote: it won't mean anything different will happen.
Go down to your local food kitchen and donate time. Give the money to local programs that help abused women. A lot of newspapers run articles this time of year about local programs that help needy people. You can often ask that your money go to particular people in the articles. Organizations like the Masons and Order of the Eastern Star often have programs where they donate money to local groups in terms of scholarships, the aforementioned food kitchens and first responders, etc.
The point is, think globally, act locally. Plus if you're worried about how much of the charity is going to the cause, it's much easier to follow-up on locally created charities to see if the money is being used properly.
(If you do want to do something at a more national level, there's Toys for Tots. Also, a lot of local police stations have similar programs for local needy kids).
Sure, sites like Maczot are at times offering apps that appear in the App Store (or even bounce people to the app store) but as long as merchants have options (however good or bad) like PayPal and others independent developers are free to not use walled gardens. Will it reduce the amount available? I'm sure it will (at least until enough people get pissed off and move toward whatever less-restrictive, third-party option opens and offers an alternative) but it won't kill it.
And all of that is what makes S. 1747 that much worse. "You're getting old and we can hire someone who won't complain about not getting overtime. Thanks for everything now get out before we call security."

And if they leave New York going west at 60 mph

And very quickly reach into your pocket and whip out your ID. Seeing the quick flash of movement tends to calm them down.
And to help out even more, to whom "they" refer.
Instead mailboxes will be filled with email promising the fastest delivery of pork products.
Sure. Next time I go to my dentist's office.

Oh, I don't know. You ever have to fill up a damn Suburban in the winter in upstate New York? Seems to take for-frickin'ever :)
Hope they can swim :)

> It's not like Microsoft started giving away puppies with Windows phones last year.
They didn't need to. Most of the phones were already dog turds.

> that doesn't rhyme in simple stanzas.
Don't tell that to Tony Danza.
> authors like J.K Rowling (who IMO don't contribute to the advancement of knowledge)
Right. Because there's nothing to be gained from getting kids to enjoy reading. It's not like they'll carry that forward later into life.

Have Congress cut the funding at the last minute.
Sure, they should only be allowed to weigh in on bills that they understand, but how often can the Corruption and Graft Bill come up for vote?

Along with a terrible case of the munchies?

Yeah, 'cause that's the only problem with the plan
Zynga must be salivating with the new potential: Johnny has sacrificed a captured enemy and sent you a human heart as gift!
If non-moderates take over, how long until they ban the apps again?

Which is why we used to be referred to as "these" United States instead of "the."
