From what the article says, I've been thinking the same thing for a long time. You can never have a precice moment in time. The units we measure are human-made. Certain measurment devices are more accurate than others. Nothing is completely accurate, but what we have is good enough for all practical purposes.

Take a picture with a camera. When you look at the photograph, you are imagining a precice moment in time, but in reality, the camera shutter was open for an infinitely measurable ammount of moments.

In our terms, the film has captured a few milliseconds of data. But it's actually an infinitely measurable ammount of time, because we can break it down even further into picoseconds, nanoseconds, and numbers we don't eve have words for..

That's what I got from the article. And it's nothing new to me..

    Spoiler Alert:

I don't think the ending sets up what has to be T4. The ending answers the question of how John becomes the leader of the human resistance. The tale of what happens next has already been told in T1 and T2. I suppose they *Could* make another Terminator movie out of it, set during/after judgement day, but I don't think it will happen.

Yes, the movie does have some plot holes, but I think it is the best action movie this year so far. I personally thought it was going to suck before seeing it, because the CGI scenes of the robots looked cheesy and fake in the previews, but I ended up enjoying it.

I seriously doubt I will be using any Intuit product ever again, due to their utter stupidity. This area is not for program data. It's not like the rest of your hard drive where programs can be scattered everywhere. The filesystem takes care of this..

Turbotax is writing it's data to your fucking boot sector, where a filesystem is non-existant. This is the reason that only one program should be there.

Sure, if you just run windows, which Intuit is assuming, there probably won't be a problem, as they know where MS stores it's boot sector data, ,and they use a different part of it. But if you run more than one OS, and a non-MS bootloader such as lilo or Grub, then you will have undefined results, as these bootloaders likely store data on the same spot as TurboTax is.

Last year's TurboTax had no such protection, and didn't even require a serial number. It was a good program and worked well. This year marks the end of my support for Intuit.

  24. Flawed logic on Unintended Aural Consequences of MP3 Compression · · Score: 1

Pretty much the only thing correct about this article is the fact that lossy compression does not reproduce a signal identical to the original.

When you compress something into say an mp3, it gets rid of certain things you wouldn't normally hear. But the things it gets rid of are different for different parts of the song, so what it throws out is not always the same. Well, there is one thing mp3 will almost always throw out, ,and that is frequencies above a certain threshold. Usually anything above 18-20khz is thrown out. Using this logic, CD's are technically lossy too, since they throw out anything above ~44khz. Nobody can hear that high anyways.

The only thing anyone needs to worry about is if they spend all their waking hours in headphones, listening to low quality mp3's all day. Even if there are any risks, I don't think the damage would be permanent.

Has anyone noticed after listening to headphones a few hours, and taking them off, it takes a few minutes to get used to your environment again?
