seems to me they should be working on power consumption of the equipment they carry. I realize the radio equipment will eat up a good bit of battery power-- but if my nintendo wii can run on 18 watts i'm sure the 'computer things' they carry can operate on that or less.
People are a social animal (well most people...). Places like myspace and facebook let people expllore the social structure- and create a forum for gossip that was a written record.:)
Geek Squad/Best Buy employees are no different than walmart employees, and it doesn't require any more IT knowledge than a wallmart janitor would need to get the job. When I work at "the Buy" I remember the *procedure* for fixing a computer was reformat and reload. These aren't professionals and, while what happened was wrong, it shouldn't surprise anyone.
This is a case where the only way the NSA would be found guilty is if they basically admitted to it-- but they don't have to because they can label their activities *state-secrets*. You can't win this one.
stuff like this makes me mad-- not because it is illegal, but for the same reason it makes me mad when:
- people run their LCD monitors at less than native resolution
- people rip to mp3/ogg/wma only to burn it to a cd... that they'll probably end up ripping again
- people save things as jpegs (lossy) only to open them later, make changes, and save again.. and again.. and again..
etc....
I am not a fan of microsoft-- in fact i refuse to use windows or give my money to microsoft in any way-- but i think that they should have the right to include whatever they want in *their* OS as long as it isn't intentionally crippling another companies product or using anti-competitive practices to steal the market from a competitor. For example-- back in the day microsoft shipped a microsoft branded java virtual machine that implemented things just a tad differently. People started programming for microsoft's JVM instead of Sun's JVM, effectively attempting to steal the java market from Sun.
This sounds a lot like microsoft "declaring" they are not bound by the GPLv3. They can make whatever "declarations" they want-- it doesn't mean they are necessarily true. Sadly-- IT management and most software radio users will read that as a fact and not an opinion.
internet access on it is only as slow as the network it is connected to. The edge network isn't *that* fast, but I wouldn't say it crawls compared to other cell internet connections. You can always use wifi! Compared to what other manufactures offer in terms of what is essentially a slick portable computer with cell phone capability-- it rocks. no one else has anything half as innovative.. multitouch display, full web browser, *good* built in video camera, itunes, et cetera
I sued to work electronics retail (best buy.. ughh), anyway- there is NO markup on game consoles, places like best buy and circuit city make their money by selling games, services, and accessories for the consoles. I highly doubt circuit city is willing to take a >$100 hit on each ps3.
If I, an end user of GPL'd software, decide I want to follow the terms of the GPLv3 instead of v2, GPLv2 gives me that option. The problem with this is any software distributed by novell now that is licensed under the gplv2 is automatically licensed under the gplv3 if the end user so wishes. Microsoft has no rights when it comes to removing that option from the end user.
There will *always* be security updates. Unfortunately bugs in programs are inherent to how we write programs. Sure- there is plenty people could do-- functional programming approach, better coding practices, et cetera-- but a few more bug fixes just isn't news. hell-- linux and macosx have bug fixes all the time too but they rarely hit slashdots front page.
Seems to me all that would need to be added is a temperature sensor. Then all they would have to do is lower the cost of gas when the gas is significantly hotter than 60 degrees.
I think nasa should make it standard mission procedure to plan several possible missions for each probe they send. Its unfortunate that there isn't more interest in space travel- but they may be able to spark more interest with more ambitious missions.
Its amazing when any big company willingly does something like this (without a class action, intense media coverage, etc). What is more amazing is its microsoft doing it. Guess they figure they can't afford to look bad at any level in such a high heat console war.
"hard to use" because it is not what you are used to maybe? Linux may not be for everyone- but i wouldn't categorize it as any harder to use than windows.
...and ike any long term programming project new people will replace the once core coders and will be overseen by previous core coders. why is this news?
Some months i might download over 5GB in OS iso images (legally). I just downloaded sabayonlinux 3.3, which is around 4GB and I have easily emerged at least another GB.
I may be fairly new to gentoo, but I've been a linux users since 98.
anyway-- 2 weeks overdue is quite normal for a final release and compares well to the release schedules of most other distros.
As I said, from the user perspective, all is well. I am not involved with gentoo development, and from my perspective, issues concerning it have yet to affect me.
'computer things' is a reference to something you've never seen, obviously.. also-- i am an electrical engineer. bite me.
his 100th birthday... He died in 1988!

$7.5 million is nothing-- but Transmeta's stock is also worth close to nothing... this can only help their stock price. Damn! Should have bought.

than just about *any* cell phone, pda or laptop? You can write a program that "spies" on someones input into the device for just about any device.

I'd like to see how they spell out exactly what cross the line and what is acceptable.
large publicly held corporations are usually only as honest as they have to be to hide their dishonesty
