All the diversity and options that are a Linux operating system are its greatest strength. It is up to the distros to develop platforms, not the community. Their job is to innovate and create new options for Linux as an operating system. Platforms using Linux would include distros like Suse, Redhat, Xandros, etc. All of which have put much time and effort to make a standard distro of Linux to be developed for. People look at Linux the wrong way. They see Linux as a single platform, and that it is not. Windows, Mac OSX, Suse, etc fall into that category
It is true that the average linux system takes longer to boot than the average windows system, but take a couple of things into consideration:
1. Linux usually loads many services/daemons that a default windows xp install does not. These offer much functionality that you do not get with a default windows install.. whether or not you use them is another story (i do, most probably do not).
2. Once up and running linux is a snappier OS, especially under heavy loads. there is more optimization for your hardware done in linux than in windows, which also means more hardware scanning/detection on boot. This takes time.
Besides... I think the majority of people care much more about the performance of their systems once they are up and running than they do about how long it takes to boot them up.
I think Windows NT was named as a successor to VMS... Think about it.. Same lead architect and the next letter in the alphabet for 'v''m''s' are 'w''n''t'.
hehe.
not to mention your eyes are capable of detecting (whether or not you notice) 82.5Hz, so having your monitor running at something as low as, say, 60Hz causes your eye to refocus several times a second. Running your monitor at 85Hz will greatly reduce eyestrain.
XML was designed to alleviate problems exchanging data between different formats. Using namespaces to define what different fields meant data could be exchanged by simply translating the namespaces. It is almost pointless, aside form being human readable, for microsoft to use XML if they are going to make it proprietary and not allow any other programs to read/write it. allowing readability of the format is one step forward.
i think you should do a little more looking into the research done on the effects of consciousness before bashing the random number generator story as a "joke". Look into Princeton University's PEAR research project, and the final conclusions.
it would put an end to those annoying Windows is better than Linux ads that come up everytime I use google to search for Linux help.
wait a minute.. isn't this like making it illegal to have any competing product next to what your looking for? stores arranged by brand anyone?
most popular games run flawlessly or close to flawlessly under transgaming's cedega, a special variant of wine targeted towards supporting windows games, most notably direct x gamels that would be more difficult to port to linux. i am currently running both world of warcraft and halflife 2 flawlessly under cedega. installation is also painless.
haha, my friends would not dare tell me for fear of being made fun of. several of them defend having to use antivirus software, defrag their hard drives, scan for spyware and adware, and scream when there firewall goes down
I regularly use my notebook to remote desktop or ssh into my home file server. Since they both run Suse Linux 9.2 and use KDE 3.3 as there desktop environment its simple. I can even take advantage the the network transparent nature of xwindows and kde to launch and display a single program window running on my server on my notebook.
I presently have 16 wireless networks available to me in my apartment's living room. When my routers ssid is the same as the other 4 netgear routers in my building i - for obvious reasons - cannot connect to mine or any of them (same ssid being broadcasted by several routers with a good signal makes it impossible to connect via the ssid). so, you've trield just simply changing the ssid, right?
Hmm, this is all business. It simply doesn't make sense from a pratical viewpoint for the company releasing the patches to fix the security holes to release a program that removes the programs that take advantage of these security holes. Microsoft's first and foremost responsibility is fixing the vunerabilities, not adding another layer of software into the mix themselves to deal with vunerabilities. And why can't Microsoft build patches that remove viruses/trojans taking advantage of the vunerability when they are first installed? doesn't that make more sense than Microsoft devoting programmers towards an Antivirus Program project?
believe it or not all that tax data sent in on paper is entered.... manually. and their emplyees are required to enter data in 90% correct. IMO... that isn't that great, considering the amount of data.
I work for best buy and i can tell u that we would love to see the price on the ipod goes down- but until apple lowers their price on it there will not be enough margin to do any kind of serious discount. most sale items go on sale at a discounted price because the manufacturer offers the product at a cheaper price and/or offers manufacturer rebates.
this is a completely pointless post, but...
lotus notes... EWWW (I had to "support" that crap at my last job.

worst. question. ever. (your sig) why would I want to clone an anemic, badly designed, proprietary OS?

that is by far the lamest post i've read all week
