Compared to the standard SFF's out there, it does look good. Unfortunately, it looks better than most of my regular tv-top items; XBox (with Media Center), Cable Tivo, Directv Tivo, etc.
It's been since the 9.x version of Mandrake and Redhat since I've done it, but to be honest, when you're staring at a command line and unfamiliar with what the commands even are, your choices are vastly limited. Remember, surfing (Googling for answsers) isn't an option here, because with no GUI, I've got no browser (forget Lynx, I wouldn't even know how to find it or run it w/o the GUI).:(
It happened not too long ago in the video card arena....Voodoo anyone?
I don't doubt open source will dominate in many areas, but I doubt it will overtake Microsoft anytime soon unless there's a major shift torward software compatibility and enhanced intuitiveness for Windows users.
For instance, I'd switch my Mother to Linux just to degrade her chances of a virus, but 3 or 4 little games she plays; Kyodai Mahjongg (this isn't normal mahjongg) Bubble Shooter (There's a similiar one, but it's got a ways to go to catch up to Bubble Shooter), Bookworm, etc. aren't available on Linux that I know of.
The other issue is that, people are comfortable with where to go & what to do when there's trouble brewing in Windows. In Linux, even veteran Windows users are often at a loss.
If you do something wrong installing video drivers in Windows, you get a smack on the hand by the OS forcing you to 640x480, where you have to deal with what you did. Make that same mistake in Linux, and without knowing what file to edit in a command line editor, most Linux newbies are looking at an OS reinstall. That's way too harsh and unfortunately, drives users right back into the open arms of Microsoft.
The law has to realize that a (monopolist) operating system must not be allowed to bundle a file browser, a web browser, a multimedia player, a firewall, an instant messenger, and any other kind of software which someone else may want to sell. Otherwise that dominant position of that monopolist will be self-reinforcing.
Outside of the food industry, where else does this happen? When I buy a new car, I get the radio, tires, upholstery, paint, etc. that the manufacturer wants me to have. Like it or not, the real world just doesn't work the way you're wanting it to.
I run BBIAgent and haven't had any issues whatsoever with it. I'd highly recommend it. Right now I have a Linksys router, and two wireless D-Link routers. Note that the BBIAgent one is the one currently in use.
Any issues/thoughts/concerns with BBIAgent anyone?
The more UNIX knowledge you pick up, the easier it becomes to learn even more.
I think the same can be said for most anything. The more a Windows user learns about Windows, the more they understand and are able to figure out on their own. I don't think that's necessarily a positive trait held solely by Unix and it's variants.
Once you are in the mindset of the way the developers of a given OS think, the easier the rest will become...you're already thinking like them at that point.
Note that I don't think this is true just for OS's...it's true for just about anything...programming a VCR, etc.
I've reported a few problems to SF projects, but they've almost all gone un-replied to. I'm a software developer myself, so I tend to only report actual bugs, not useage annoyances.
What I find strange is the idea that OS projects have many more eyes & programmers yet bugs reported often get no replies...not just mine, just the many I read in their respective forums.
The other thing is, (and again, I'm not trolling here) OS projects seem never to make it to v1.0, so that makes it tough for people to take OSS seriously.
Regarding IE, I've seen the IE crashes all IE thing too many times as well, but it helps if you go to Folders-Options and check the box stating to "Launch folder windows in a separate process". Hope that helps you out some.
I've been using TB for a short time and converted my Mother over also.
I'd been using PopFile with OE and to be honest, it was better at determining what was junk mail and what wasn't. I'm hoping TB gets better over more time.
I'm using a nightly build so I can have one inbox for multiple accounts, and I'm sure it hasn't been full tested, but so far some other things I'm not crazy about are:
Date sorting doesn't seem to work correctly
Upon starting I often get a message about the folder not being done processing yet (and I haven't clicked anything)
Junk mail classification isn't overly great after a couple months of training..PopFile seemed to get better faster
Can't search subject & body in one search
Need 3rd party backup/restore
Firefox
I really like it once I get it tweaked, I've had to put together a step by step process to get it that way, too bad I can't simply bundle those steps together and automate them
Need 3rd party backup/restore
Some sites still don't render quite right
It bombs MUCH more than IE did:( Note that this is on a clean XP install and the only application that bombs
Need a "New Tab From Clipboard" button
Copy/Paste in the address bar seems not to work sometimes..haven't nailed this one down yet
Using Squirrelmail, IE put me at the beginning of the box w/the domain name following. FF puts me at the end of the domain name where I have to hit HOME then type in my username
I know these are mostly minor annoyances, but still, they bug me nonetheless.
Don't forget Tribes and Tribes2. I don't know about the rest of these games, but you can't even use DirectX in Tribes if you wanted to- support was disabled in a patch. (Tribes is pretty Nvidia biased).
That might have something to do w/why it's ranked 18th right now according to www.gamespy.com/stats.
My router http://www.bbiagent.net/ is floppy based, and the 486 it's in doesn't contain a HD, CDRom Drive or USB ports. Heck, it doesn't even have PCI slots (to add a USB hub) if I remember correctly.
Compared to the standard SFF's out there, it does look good. Unfortunately, it looks better than most of my regular tv-top items; XBox (with Media Center), Cable Tivo, Directv Tivo, etc.
Heh, a blunder
Good information.
Regarding Kyodai though, it's not solitair, it's a combination of 9 different games, some of them totally new, not copies of existing titles.
Heh, a blunder

Awesome, I didn't know there was a Linux version as I hadn't looked in a while. Thanks for posting that.

Just curious, what industry are you in? I personally don't know anyone with a MAC, and only 3 or 4 people running Linux.
I run Smoothwall as my firewall/router, but right now, my desktop OS is still WinXP.
This Old Garage - a friends site, check it out
Do you systems actually get "owned" that often?

A dialog box pops up in FF if I PW protect a folder on my webserver (at my host). In it, I have to enter security information to proceed.
I gotcha.
So many times, people get sensitive about OS issues being posted, but they LOVE to post all of the MS ones.
Why would you not want it posted? Is it better for there to be holes that no one knows about simply because it's OS software?
I'd bet your paycheck we'll be seeing more and more of these.

There's a new way of thinking.
Oh...so, no shared code huh? If 9 different apps use something, I have to get fixes for all 9 instead of one fixed shared DLL then?
And this is a REAL operating system? I think I'll stick w/mine.
Thanks for taking me seriously.

I'm sure this has it's benefits, and the student definitely deserves a good pat on the back, but will it make Doom 3 run any faster? ;-)
Unreal, no, quake, yes.
lmao I was waiting to see if anyone else had replied before I posted anything.

No, but it will be nice for UT2004, probably the fastest paced FPS out there.
Well said...seriously.
I wonder if a choice had to be made, which would be chosen, a so-so Linux submission, or a MS bashing submission.
