The UNIX ideal is that you make programs to do a very specfic, specialzed job, really really well. And then, you can combine these specialized jobs into more sophisticated systems, but you never just build one general purpose program from scratch and have people use it. That would be duplicating code.
Hence the reason there aren't any say...different distributions of Linux. I see what you're saying. O_o
Let's take the CRM link in your signature as a comparison example for your theory...

I think their cost center will stay open due to the fact that they'll still be selling their product if this is the alternative.

I'm struggling with the thought that Microsoft might want their name tainted by selling their flagship OS at Wal-Mart. Let's be honest, when something starts being sold at Wal-Mart, it often times the indication that it's bargain bin time for that product elsewhere.
How much good does it really do Linux to be represented on the cheapest hardware available?
My wife's machine (used for surfing, word processing, bill paying, etc.) is an AMD 1.4Ghz with 1G of RAM and a GF3. That's about the minimum specs you stated in your post. There's absolutely no way I'd consider it playable. I put it on there just to see how it would run and even at 640x480 @ Low Detail it was extremely jerky.
It does however play pretty well on my machine; a P4-2.8Ghz, w/1G of RAM, and a Radeon 9700 Pro.
While I would agree that Linux isn't necessarily lacking in sheer numbers of applications and it's definitely as easy if not easier to install than Windows, it still has some major stumbling blocks keeping it from being "ready for the desktop" in my opinion.
Things that come to mind are; printing, plug & play, hardware support (drivers), software installation (ditch the post install config file hacking) and in general... the handling of user screwups (apply the wrong video drivers and you'll see what I'm talking about).
Does anyone besides the/. reader base really care though? I mean first of all, most of them will never hear of this bias. Secondly, of those that do, will they really care? If they're using MyMSN or MSN.com as their homepage they'll most likely get this search engine as their default and never know the difference. Once webmasters realize this, they'll start finding ways to get their sites to be listed "2nd" on MS's engine listings.
There are a lot of Google users out there, but MS's name is even more widely known and I hear their advertising budget isn't too shabby.;)
I've modded by XBox and put XBox Media Center & Media Player on it. That's how I view all of my music videos, some movies (for traveling) and where all of my ripped music resides.
This is actually something the Unreal Engine has done better than the Quake Engine. The Unreal Engine supported software rendering until it's latest incarnation.
I will however be purchasing this one on release day.
It might be "confusing" at first glance but in reality it's due to the fact that the Unreal Engine is in constant enhancement mode. John (Carmack) typically recodes large portions and considers them new engines. Tim (Sweeney) tends to keep enhancing the existing engine and licensee's reap the benefits.
You'd have a hard time selling the fact that id engines are more popular than Epic ones anymore.
When I purchase something, I use @mydomain.com. This let's me track if they begin sending me spam or selling my address to someone who does.
For instance, let's say I buy something at Office Depot online. For my email address I enter officedepot@mydomain.com. If I start getting spam at that address, I know it's from them and can act accordingly.
I even had one company phone me thinking I'd screwed up entering my email address. Once I explained "why" I did that, they thought it was a really good idea.
I can't take credit for it though, I got the idea from my internet hosting company www.3-95.com.
According to George B (3DR) they were working on the slow motion bullet thing before the movie ever came out. He posted it in their forums (and probably elsewhere).
I used to be a HUGE fan, and I mean big. I waited until around 2 years ago to finally give up hope but I've given up. In all honesty I really don't think Duke will ever ship. I'm no longer even convinced that they're working on it. Unfortunately (for 3DR) this conclusion makes myself and many others no longer even pay attention to 3DR staff news/comments.
I'd wish them luck but I don't think it would help at this point.
I'm not putting down Mozilla, I'm using Firefox right now and have switched my wife, Mother, and my own PC's to using Firefox and Thunderbird almost across the board. I do think however you have to give credit where it's due. The massive rise in their popularity isn't soley due to the fact that they are offering a solid browser, it's also due to the fact that MS isn't.
I've owned a 9700 Pro since they were $300 on Ebay (still around 350 new). I've still not upgraded and I'm a hardcore gamer. This card has lasted me longer than most.
There wasn't sufficient difference to upgrade to a 9800 Pro but I'll probably be going to the X800 Platinum at some point in the near future
You won't be disappointed with your purchase, I hope you enjoy the games on it.
I don't believe he uses Free Software; that means that Microsoft is not satisfying their customers, and Free Software can perform better than Microsoft even in the ease of use area!
Ahhhh, so Microsoft is the only developer of non open source software. I wasn't aware of that.
I agree that the dog should be shot, but it is an easy setting to change.
What about Bob
You need to Read The Friggen Parent. I was responding to "Since when has it been news that VNC is shitty and insecure?"

For those interested in RealVNC's response, see here - http://www.realvnc.com/faq.html#security
Isn't VNC open source? If so, isn't that supposed to make it not shitty and insecure?
Understood. I thought that was part of his signature and didn't even pay attention to it.

While I don't agree that 70% to 90% is double, I'd hardly call the post flamebait.

Obvious flamebait/troll.
