The whole point of having an obscene fine or threat of imprisonment is for deterrent effect only. In other words, completely useless.
The idea is they'll find a person or two to "make an example of," parade them around the media and that should be about it. By the same token, (ha, when I first typed that I didn't hit the 'n' hard enough and it was, by the same toke...) they could go the War on Drugs route but all the numbers are not on their side. They would never win such a war.
If they really try to imprison that many people they'll need to outsource our prisons to reduce overhead.
Whatever. All the college kids here are always using p2p and you know what's funny! They still go out and buy records. I'm always hearing them say, "I have to buy such and such album I got off Kazaa."
And I see those same college kids in the local Tower records and guess what, they are buying CDs.
By your argument I should see a mere fraction of them out buying CDs.
Just because you're using p2p for rampant piracy, doesn't mean everybody else is.
The thing is, just ask any of these kids if they listen to the radio. I've found that not many do. Some listen to the local college station when it's not playing world music. The majority of kids find out about music via p2p.
Yes, yes... I admit it. I dislike Phish. However, I do like bands like Beulah, David and the Citizens, The Decemberists, Iron and Wine, Kind of Like Spitting, The Thrills and Wilco if that makes a difference.
So, in the world the amount of truly creative people is a little less than half the population of the United States.
That sounds optimistic.
Original ideas are like original songs. They are in some way new, yet--like as not--there is a similar melody that seems to be occuring.
Most folk tend to churn out what amounts to one chord droning.:( If we are lucky perhaps it's a
basic three chord pop/punk song. Either way people seem to labour under some majestic delusion that they have come up with somewhat new.
A better approach would be to reply to somebody's pro-RIAA piracy post with a link to their previous post which is ("pretend") anti-software piracy in nature. I'm sure that would be more effective than making broad generalizations.
After all, presumably you are a slashdotter and apparently you do not fall into the generalizations you've created. As such, it is possible that while some slashdotters try to blur and distract a valid issue perhaps not all of them do so.

Coincidently, this is also one of the key reasons that there are more worms/virii released that target Windows than Mac or Linux - why target Mac or Linux when you can target Windows, with many, many times more users?
I have noticed some viruses for linux. One was just a script and it recommended that the indivdual chmod a+x and then run it. The other one you had to type gcc -o virus virus.c and then run the resulting binary in order to get it to work. And then there was that one where it wanted to load a module but it couldn't because modules weren't supported on that kernel, although it did try for/dev/kmem.
Then there was that one that installed an irc backdoor:

Oh, wait. that last one was a Windows thing. But those other ones. Look out. They'll do some nasty things. I mean, it takes a bit of work to get them running. But once you do. Look out. They're dangerous!
Last time i linked to an article from the left and now I'll link to an article from the right.
OK, maybe those heartless American multinationals don't care about the American worker, but at least our patriotic state and federal governments should. You might think at least they'd be hiring Americans and not outsourcing overseas, yet many of them do just that. The state of Washington gets much of its programming done by programmers in -- you guessed it -- India. The U.S. military is now getting its cruise-missile parts from our comrades in China. It's all one big, happy global party. Unfortunately American workers are both catering the festivities and picking up the tab.
We are bleeding both manufacturing and skilled-knowledge service jobs. What will the few remaining employed Americans be doing 10 years from now? Over the past decade, textile employment nationally has fallen from about 850,000 jobs in 1994 to about 300,000 recently. What electronic product is still made in the United States? Forget that. What product of any kind is still made here? Give up? So do I.
i dunno. i spent a couple of hours downloading america's army. when the 650mb or whatever was done the stupid thing didn't work. it was corrupt. so i tried again a couple days later from a different mirror. same thing. so nice to waste ones' bandwidth to have something not work.
the coolest thing about the gimp, and the thing that i wish ALL applications did is this:
if you go to the menu amd highlight an option you can press a key combination (say ctrl+alt+b) and it automagically assigsns the key combo. you don't have to go to some stupid settings screen.

Of course the U.S. is a treaty breaker. In the past it's what the U.S. has done best.
Treaty? What Treaty? Gimme yr land!
According to Life of Python John Cleese states how he would like to be remembered for Life of Brian, he feels it was theird best work.

Both flac songs and ogg songs return more than a few results.
Hopefully there's a bit more than just Phish live tracks (eewwww) and 1920's jazz songs (rock!).
...would have been teriffic as a doctor!
Just spam in SCOs name and then aol will block access to their website. That ought to shut them up a bit.
G'day toiny script kiddie!

What and ask for a $699 license fee?
Like, free legal downloads for $6 a month. DRM free. The artists get paid. We explain how...? This article is interesting because it breaks down $ amount for revenue lost by *aa and the cost for an agency to collect fees to arrive at this amount.
According to popular legend, once all of Issaquah high school came down with mono.
I've never had mono, but it sounds like a shitty way to spend a month.

Why am I not surprised that the site www.devx.com is running Microsoft-IIS/5.0 on Windows 2000 and there's a huge .Net ad on the front page.

Some of the files they mention were written by Torvalds 1991-1992; like linux/arch/i386/entry.S and linux/arch/i386/traps.c.
Some of the best places to buy music online are:

This article brings up many interesting points on outsourcing. Its history. Its effects in the past. The consequences.

This prompts a very important question: Would you expect the same from Microsoft if they had faced a similar break-in?
we'll never know because they'll never tell us.
