Trust me... any code I write for fun will be freely available and modifiable and such. I write my code at home for fun (at work... well... they won't let me take my code out). My code is your code. And I got my book on Cocoa yesterday and it seems like it'll be a breeze to get into since I already have a strong hold in Java and J++ with some knowledge of C/C++.

What's the difference between Cocoa and Carbon? I got incredibly ticked off at my PC and sold it and went ahead and purchased the new iMac. I have every intention of programming on it and have mainly a Java background but can do C/++ if needed. Hopefully my iMac will get here soon...

But my provider MediaComm I can't seem to reach either. So how can I get ahold of somebody to hook up new service or change my current service? Anybody?

  8. What the....? on Gift Service Exchanges Online Gifts · · Score: 1

This has to be one of the most idiotic things on the consumer end. Here are some things that come to mind. Keep in consideration that this idea is only stupid because the idea of Christmas is giving not recieving and exchange/upgrading cause the present somebody got you sucks.

    1) About 1/5 of the gifts given* are joke gifts. The idea of a joke gift isn't to exchange them. They're dumb and that's why they are there. American consumers suck but we buy stupid things cause they're funny.

    2) 1/6 of the gifts given* are gift certificates anyhow. As the article states you might as well just give people gift certificates.

    3) 1/4 of the gifts given* are clothes. I do see where somebody might want to exchange clothes. They are meant to be worn and if they don't fit right or that style doesn't suit you I can see an exchange. But if you get the clothes online you have to try them on usually anyhow to know if they fit.

    4) It just plain defeats my purpose of Christmas. If person X gets 20 pairs of pants they should end up with 20 pairs of pants not an XBox, an extra controller, and some games. If that person really wanted an XBox he/she shoulda told all the people to pool their money together to get them one.

All-in-all I really don't see how the gift certificate doesn't handle this already. Essentially you might as well get them a gift certificate and say "Please buy item X if you like". But they can use it for anything. All that getting them a "gift" that is to be used as store credit does is make them think that you thought of something when really you just wanted to give them a gift certificate. I don't see this as being some nifty new system at all.

I run a 16 and 32 channel mixing board myself and just figuring out which channel goes to which instrument/mic is a pain sometimes. According to the article when the item is plugged in it would show up on the mixing board as "Whomever's Guitar" or whatever it was set to. This would be very very handy I think for the people behind the scenes. Not only will it be beneficial to the quality of the sound but beneficial to people like me. Hopefully this technology will be implemented in more things that guitars, which I'm certain it will.

It'd make life easier if you could upload effects straight to the guitar/mic instead of having to run it through an effects box too.

  15. Price is certainly not worth it. on Rent Music Over the Net · · Score: 2, Interesting

Let's assume that most CD's are 10 tracks long and $15 a piece. This gives you 10 CD's you can download a month. 10 CD's which you can't play on your CD player. 10 CD's which you do not own. 10 CD's which if your hard drive crashes you may or may not be able to get back because you can't make backups.

Now I feel that I buy a decent amount of CD's. I have about 300 which is a lot for some and a speck of dust to others. But most of the time there isn't even a new CD that comes out each month that I would want to buy. So why not just hold onto my $10 a month and buy my $15 CD's when they come out. The quality of that is guaranteed to be even better than whatever this service is offering and I get to keep it and do what I want with it indefinitely.

On the topic of quality, MP3's as they currently are are pretty dang good to most people's ears. The amount of people that hear a difference between the two formats is questionable.
