On a different topic... this is probably the first time I can think of that almost every major news site has gone down. Do you think that major news sites will now have a plan in case an event of this magnitude were to happen in the future? I noticed CNN is "back up" but it's almost purely text. Will websites detect the traffic overload and automatically stop dishing out huge graphics and such so the important things like the news can be displayed? Just something to stimulate conversation (I hope...).
Guess I shoulda done my research first... the Japanese version comes with the following:
DVD-ROM containing Beta Release 1 of Linux for PS2
40 GByte Hard Disc Drive
10 BASE-T/100 BASE-TX Ethernet Interface
USB Keyboard
USB Mouse
PlayStation 2 VGA AV Connector (HD 15 plus Stereo Audio) - requires "sync on green" monitor
Included on the DVD Disc is:-
"PlayStation 2" System Manual Set
"PlayStation 2" Runtime Environment
PS2 Linux Beta Release 1 Install Kit
Linux Kernel 2.2.1
XFree86 3.3.6
gcc 2.95.2
glibc 2.2.2
So you have linux running on your PS2. That 8 MB memory card ain't gonna last long. Isn't there a hard drive slated to come out? If so then you wouldn't even have to worry about networking it to play MP3's and such. You might be able to actually install linux to the PS2 Hard Drive and then be connected to the net (which I guess would require networking) and get your MP3's and such from there. Hopefully the Hard Drive will be out soon. Otherwise it seems a little worthless to me.
I personally think that people won't pay for online content as of right now because people are used to exchanging money primarily for material objects. If I spend $0.076 on a phone ring I actually don't "get" anything. Now if you compiled these phone rings on a CD and sold them to me for $5.00 for a CD of phone rings I think I would be more likely to buy it. Even if you put the equivalent price per units worth of phone rings on there (about 65 songs). The reason is because I recieve something I can throw at the cat. I think it's the same for burning audio CD's with tracks you downloaded. I have already purchased the material object, it just lacks the data. The same goes for almost anything you can snag off the net. I guess that's the reason I don't see it working in my head.
Okay so I just went and watched "Evolution" (this is on topic) and well... I know it was a comedy in all but here's the lowdown. We send out DNA into space. The "aliens" can't figure out how it works cause it doesn't make any humans. But, as a gesture of good faith they send some of their "DNA" to us. We die. Great. Doesn't sound like a good idea to me.
So I get home the other day, minding my own business. I go out to check the mail and there's this letter from the courts. I'm being sued by the RIAA! Why? Well I don't know. So I read it. I guess one of their spies overheard me humming one of my favorite songs (I would disclose the song but my lawyer advises me not to talk about it). So anyhow watch out. I told them I would just not hum anymore and they seemed to think that was okay but if I do it again... well... ya know. Anyway, just a heads up. The spies are everywhere.
Please keep in mind that I'm not trying to shift blame either way.
I work for one of these companies. So just for some "inside info" here's the lowdown.
As far as the QA process goes it is pretty good. In fact many states QA after we QA to double check. The fact is is that things are missed. You wouldn't believe the data that comes through the systems and while everything is supposed to be accounted for it sometimes isn't. I have to say that the testing process is extensive. Often times though the customer demands that the final product be delievered even when we know that the product has not been tested.
As far as Open Source code, to the best of my knowledge there is no problem with a customer looking at our code. Do they have the monetary resources to hire somebody to look at it? Will that person interpret the specifications correctly? No they don't have the money and it takes a while to learn the process correctly.
I have never scored an essay in my life but I can see where it would get terribly monotonous. Add on top of that supervisers pushing supervisors pushing little people and the monotonous job becomes a fast paced let's get it out the door deal.
I do have a problem with schools using these tests as a high stakes test where students graduate/not graduate or similar repricussions. Just as anything created by man there is possibility of error. Just think of how many various things have been recalled. Heck, yesterday I saw a recall at a store for a Halloween Costume because it was flammable. It's May folks. Halloween was October. But stuff like this happens be in consumer goods, software, or whatever.
I do think the tests are worthwhile (mildly) in comparison to other students, and to see if the student has improved. I do not think they should be used to decide a students fate by any means.
I dunno... I don't feel like typing anymore 'cause I could go on and on... anyhow just in case you weren't aware these opinions are my own and not the opinion of the company I work for. If you have any questions feel free to ask them and I'll try to answer them (in my opinion and with the information I have without giving away "those things you're not supposed to when you work for a company").
Everybody I know loves the family guy. Absolutely loves it. I think it is *the* funniest show I've seen to date. It was cut because people didn't like it I suppose although I am very glad it's coming back. I'm just curious why people didn't like the family guy so if any of you didn't like it... why?
Also as far as x-files is concerned I stopped watching it at the beginning of this season. The reason? Not beacuse little Mulder... it was because I purchased season one on DVD. I spent ~$100 on an awesome set of DVD's but have I watched it? nope. So I figure I'll watch em when it comes out on DVD.
As of SAS 8 (possibly before that even) the Output Delivery System (ODS) has supported HTML output. Since one of the main things that SAS does (it's a statistical analysis language) is in fact create reports it does this quite well I think. You'll have some disagree but as far as I've been able to tell the only language people like is the one they program in. So you might want to check out SAS. I've had quite a bit of luck with it. The URL is http://www.sas.com or you want to click http://www.sas.com. You can also contact me via my webpage if you want some more info on it since I (and my employer) consider myself to be good at it.
I am TOTALLY down with them getting rid of that paper-clip. It comes up at all of the most "convenient" times of course. But my question is that since Clippy pisses most of us off why in gods name are they going have Gilbert Godfried do the voice for Clippy?!?!?! I mean come on... if I had two bullets I'd shoot 'em both... and annoying 'icon' with an equally annoying voice... jesus krimeny...
Okay I didn't like the movie all that much... but I thought the Wayans Brother actually did the best job out of all the characters... if you think of it as a campaign then he is simply the character that goofs off the whole time you're playing... when I first saw the preview and saw he was in it I thought "stupid wayans brother will ruin the movie"... but then I thought about it a little more and realized that I play that type of character in D&D...
On a side note the empress didn't deliver her lines for crap. She just threw them out as separate words instead of complete sentences...
Actually..... the movie was made from the MP3 (if it's the same movie we're talking about; the people sitting at a table playing D&D and the one guy in the kitchen is a dragon like thing and it's all done with 3d models)... if you look at the credits at the end of the Summoner D&D movie it gives credit to the Dead Alewives skit. Henceforth the Dead Alewives did it first.
I too desire to work overseas... what I am doing is working at a company in the US that has offices overseas... interoffice transfer is probably the easiest although I haven't tried it yet. Also post resumes online with an indication that you want to work overseas. Maybe somebody will invite you over. Then you know you're wanted.
I saw some of the pictures for a bit... but then upon refreshing the page not only is it not there but it looks like they've removed that page... hehehe
I must say I'm VERY tempted to get one of these things... but I'm also worried about sending them $250 and either a) recieved a crappy quality DVD player or b) no DVD player at all. Other than a small review on The Daily Radar (it was more of a "WOW! Look what you can buy but we've never seen one for real") I haven't seen anything on it. And my searches bring up nothing. Can anybody find some "respected" information on it?
I personally used to use MP3's on my webpage... instead of embedding a wav file into the page I would embed an MP3 file into the web page since it took up less space. If they had deleted my MP3s some of the flare of the webpage would have been gone...
Why would people host a porn site on.kids? The porn sites want you to go to their site, see a little bit of skin, and then give them your credit card #... kids do not have credit cards. Also upon registering an agreement would be signed to the effect of there will be no objectionable material on this site (of course that depends on the locale and peoples opinions but the agreement would be much longer and much more specific)
The "quality" porn sites (Playboy, Hustler, i.e. the big ones) would move over to.adult (my preference) no problem I feel. The little ones would trickle eventually. There would still be some random porn sites on.com,.org,.net,.etc but most would move to.adult.
As for you people that are worried about people registering www.naked.kids and such, what is the point of that? They could have www.nakedkids.com if they wanted probably. But if they actually had naked kids on the site they would be violating the contract of having a.kids domain.
If I spent as much time on homework as I do on Slashdot I'd be an A student.

Although I'm *quite* wary of posting this here... I've mirrored a few of the news stories at http://www.helmetboy.com
Is it just me or is the "news" in general today slashdotted....?

Maybe in a few years they can stop me from getting a day star tan... stupid day star... always coming down on me...
hehehe (in my best Trinity voice) "Slashdot this..."

I wonder if microsoft.com will be slashdotted...
It's 9' tall I believe... not 6' as stated above...

All he has to do is add a PS2 to the auction to make it go up a few thousand... :P
But really... it is sorta weird that he doesn't have an Atari on there... and well... it woulda taken a LOOOOONG time to type all that crap up...

Not only was this posted before (right here) but I think it was also a quickie at one point... do the slashdot people not read slashdot?
I don't frequent many sites so I have to assume it was here... wasn't this already posted a few months back? Maybe I read this somewhere else...
