It seems a lot of people have issues with the service... which is fine. For me personally, the service is great.
Last night I bought the CD Thrive by the Newsboys for $9.90. At my local Best Buy the CD is $14.99. I'm not much of one to shop around so maybe I could have found it a dollar cheaper here or there. In essence, I saved $5.00. Yeah I had to pay a quarter or so for the CD-R but whatever. From the time I clicked "Buy Album" to the time my computer ejected the burned disc it took a total of 12 minutes. A good 95% of the time that I listen to music I will buy a CD, bring it home, encode it (used to encode to MP3 160, now AAC 128), then burn a copy to keep in my car. Very rarely did I use the original CD as I have a Jeep Wrangler and things have disappeared before. So quality wise I haven't lost anything either.
Are the record companies making a mint off me since they don't have to press the CD's or make the cover art. Possibly. But I saved $5.00 plus gas/time. They were already making money off me anyhow.
I was actually impressed with the number of artists they did have. I'd say they had a good 3/4ths of the artists I wanted to listen to and as this is just the beginning I'd anticipate more in the coming months.
I personally am going to be using this service as much as possible. It may not be for everybody... if you're so high strung on a "down with the RIAA" mission and you feel that you're giving them more money than before then I wouldn't recommend it. My thought is that even if they are getting more money I am losing less. Which is what I care about. If you don't have a cable modem speed connection then it's probably not the cat's pajamas either. Maybe you don't like the selection. Fair enough. If your favorite P2P network works for you that's fine too. As far as ease of use and reliability goes, I'm feeling that this is something I will definitely continue to use.
Actually from what I understand he asks for permission out of respect for his peers, not because he has to. There is a Christian group called ApologetiX who parodies popular songs and to the best of my knowledge they do not seek permission. "Weird Al" seeks permission so that his peers don't beat him up.
A good example is that he sought permission to remake Gangsta's Paradise by Coolio. He thought he had permission, made the parody, but once the parody got out Coolio and his management denied ever giving permission. If Coolio gave permission or not isn't an issue so much. There was nothing Coolio could do about it (my only basis for that is that no legal action was taken even though he seemed very upset about it). So while "Weird Al" can parody songs without permission he tries not to.
I know sometimes you open source zealots get outta hand so I'm gonna have to step in and stop this. Open source is generally okay but why in the world would anybody make an open source Blue Screen of Death?
Maybe SlashCode should be set up to look through the links for the past X days/months/whatever and see if there are any duplicate links. Then it could bring up a little warning saying that the link has already been posted so somebody can do a quick check. It wouldn't keep all of the dupes out but it'd help. Of course, thats a rough idea and I'm not going to code it... dupes don't bother me all that much...
I agree with you 100%. One neat thing I just found out is that if I highlight a URL and then "right-click" on it I can go to that address. Even if it's not a link.
I can't get to the articles but... does it say how many minutes/hours you can record on one standard DVD? For instance iDVD will only allow for 90 minutes to be recorded onto a DVD but I'm pretty sure that's because of the compression it uses... just curious.
I've been a sysadmin/web guru/programmer/kernel hacker for 2.3 billion years! I know nothing of this "evil bit" you speak of! It either doesn't exist or isn't well known of... so who cares!?
But I'm a troll that's a Mac zealot... I wouldn't think making fun of yourself would be considered troll activity... but whatever... mod this down too please...
Ahhh... but aren't these iBooks? Counter-Strike? Bah I say! Us Apple users have things like... ummm... Break-out... ummmm... Super Break-out... errr... ummmm.... photoshop...
I'd probably tell myself how Jesus died for my sins... that it is through faith alone that I can have eternal life through Christ. But that's just me... I wish I had made that decision a lot sooner.
(pre-flame disclaimer) Yes I am serious, no I'm not going to respond to negativeness about this because it's what I would have told me and arguing on the internet won't get us anywhere anyhow.
Are You Considering an Etch a Sketch? The Lindows Mobile PC beats an Etch a Sketch or Ghost Writer hands-down. Now (for only a few (hundred) dollars more), you can have extreme mobility with the power and versatility of a PC in one affordable computer!
Then they should've stated it was a PowerBook, not an iBook. And as far as I can tell the 12" PowerBook doesn't have PCMCIA slots either... whereas the Lindows comparison says it does (providing they are talking about the PowerBook).
Also $699 is the "base price"... if you try to configure a system for $699 it's almost next to impossible. I tried to configure that system and there is nothing on the first page that tells me that switching out an option will either lower or raise the price. Clicking continue gives me a price of $1,277... I have no idea where they get their $699 prices from... frankly I find Dell's pricing scheme very misleading.
I don't know all the much but their iBook comparison is off... I think they have Powerbook and iBook specs combined into one notebook... the iBook has a G3 chip not a G4 and I don't think it has PCMCIA slots either...
If you *really* don't like these ads even add the websites that use them to your hosts file... then you're guaranteed to never go there...
I like the whole CD though... :) And I wanted to see how long I could go from nothingness to having a full "retail" track CD made...
Can I get these on OS X? I hope not.
