As a person that have a rather iconic status he can reach more people than many others. He has at least not abused his position in life given by his characterization of Spock, which means that people will listen when he do say something.

The sad thing here is that the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a very slow and agonizing thing to experience - you know that you eventually will die from it. Cancer is another high risk for smokers. Of course people can die from lung cancer or COPD anyway - but smoking increases the risk considerably. Be it passive smoking or active - it increases the risk.

  14. Re:"whitelisting" on Is Whitelisting the Answer To the Rise In Data Breaches? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Most data breaches have occurred within a company, and the only way around it is to segment the networks and servers so that only select computers have access to financial data, others have access to HR data and yet others have access to strategic documents. Then it depends on company type if yet more segments are needed. In most cases the software development can go in one segment - the majority of the software developed is bread&butter. But in other cases special projects may need their own segment. Also make sure that all printers have their own sub-segment of each segment to make sure that any printer that has been hacked isn't going to have access to all the data, just the print data.

Of course - this goes against the strategy of installing everything in one huge server running virtual servers.

Whenever there is a need to exchange data it has to require manual action between individuals in both segments.

And for browsing the internet - run a sandbox solution to isolate any browsing from the remaining network. It may mean that the web browser is on a special server. If that server is contaminated it's not a big problem to rebuild it.

  15. It's a question of performance. on Ask Slashdot: Why Are We Still Writing Text-Based Code? · · Score: 1

Writing the code in text is often producing more efficient code than using generic blocks of code that someone has written. The problem with the generic block style is that they invariably have an overhead of always checking incoming and outgoing data which is good from a stability point of view but horrible from a performance point of view.

When writing code in text you can select where to put the data constraints for the least performance impact, and then execute your loops, parallelize your tasks and optimize the I/O easier.

And even if you have a building blocks system you need someone to program the building blocks.

  18. Re:No, because they are not compatible on Should Nuclear and Renewable Energy Supporters Stop Fighting? · · Score: 1

The most easily variable power source is actually water power, it's literally power on a tap.

Nuclear power - it's clean at the power plant, but it's dirty when mining and enriching, and it costs a crapload of energy to enrich, which means that it's not always the best option.
Sun and wind are suffering from varying intensity. But if every household had solar panels on the roof then the amount of energy produced that way would be significant. And with a large number the variations in production due to clouds would be smoothed out. Wind power is more unreliable since it depends a lot on mechanical reliability and safety reviews of the blades - it makes bad news when a blade comes flying on its own.

The future is probably best served by a combination of minimizing energy usage and a diversifying of energy production.

And that's my experience - too many names to keep track of, too much information inflow to filter makes me forget names of people even though I recognize their faces.

The big problem with age is that your mind gets filled up with information, and it's hard to intentionally forget stuff. Sometimes it's easier to remember old stuff than new. If there only was a way to forget some bad old stuff to make room for new...

One way to improve the situation is to lower the time spent watching TV since that's a giant information feed. And lack of sleep impacts the memory capacity too.

Also realize that the human brain has evolved to be an information store and an association processor to pick out a good solution for a problem based on what seems to be insufficient data. This is of course not always a blessing - it's a curse too, and that's what causes the balance between a genius and a mad man. I would like to extend the quote by Arthur Schopenhauer: "Talent hits a target no one else can hit. Genius hits a target no one else can see." to also add "A mad man sees a target that isn't there."

You have to be aware that the HP SAE definition has changed at one time in history making the modern version virtually equal to the HP DIN value (the tolerance difference between engines is greater than the difference of measurement today, which means that stating HP DIN or HP SAE is redundant today), so you have to use the correct translation depending on model year.

The most common standards to measure horsepowers by are SAE or DIN, but there have been others as well, like SMMT.
