    These companies are utilizing OSS and promoting own products. They are not promoting OSS. Companies assume that GPL is same as BSD license and they are free to use work of others.

    Usually users can't search proxy's cache. They ask for existing page and proxy provides cached copy or downloads page and stores it in cache. Proxies respect page modification headers by default.

    Whole desktop computers cost less than a Photoshop license these days.

    You can use PhotoShop trials for more than 5 months. 3 time limited versions of Elements, 3 time limited versions of Photoshop and one time unlimited PhotoShop version with disabled save functions.

    Photoshop Elements cost less than 100 USD. Older versions can be bundled with scanners.

    I really hate articles that describes all these great networks and server rooms but don't have any pictures of the hardware.
    Will you see the difference between photos of Cisco switches and Dell boxes in MIT and similar dusty boxes in other campus or commercial data center? Google for Dell PowerEdge 2850. Lots of pictures.

    quickbooks was written and tested on windows. wine does not provide full windows api. Sane admins won't run critical application on OS that might be missing some functions used in application. have you seen console output of the program executed in wine? If your car breaks work on windows, would you like to take a test drive with Linux and Wine on 1000 hour rally?

    Actually, that story sounds (ironically) like my attempt to switch to Ubuntu.

    Download install CD. Burn it. Boot from it. Install. "Using GRUB as your bootloader is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED". Okay, use GRUB.

    Boot up. Cannot load an OS. Grub error 1.5.

    Read your BIOS manual and find the way to make sure that CD is booted before HDD. You could boot from CDROM when you installed Ubuntu first time. CDROM is read only medium. Your installation should not break it. If you get grub errors, you are not booting from CDROM. CDROMs are booted with syslinux and not with grub.

    You can't burt CDs on Windows XP, if you are not a privileged user. You need third party software (nero burn rights) or mess with permissions for that.

    Adding applications

    Once that was done, I started installing my favorite packages.

    Tops on my list of applications are Firefox and Thunderbird, and I always get rid of modified versions and substitute the pristine versions direct from Mozilla.org. So I downloaded both, unzipped and untarred them into /usr/lib/, where Debian likes to keep them, and created symlinks in /usr/bin/ pointing to /usr/lib/firefox/firefox and /usr/lib/thunderbird/thunderbird, where the system expects to find them.

    Apparently dude've never read FHS. Say goodbye to your favorite packages when you apt-get upgrade.

    It's like some small Pacific island country who has just acquired nuclear weapons, and now the USA is going to come invade them with two navy fleets. The island country's president says: "I see this as a good thing: the USA is now taking us seriously." Yeah, right.
    I think we've already learned that part in Korea and Mid East. The USA does not invade countries with nuclear weapons.

    configuration files can provide better interoperatibility only when programs are compatible. I think Samba is not fully compatible with Microsoft CIFS implementation and Active directory stuff. Lots of gotchas, closed stuff and hacks that make it work. Novell would have to provide specifically compiled and patched samba version in order to maximize compatibility with microsoft and reduce number of issues. Patches and compilation options are part of source rpms.

    Extortion is a criminal offense, which occurs when a person either obtains money or property from another through coercion or intimidation or threatens one with physical harm unless they are paid money or property.

    They don't get those 50 USD and you must pay for delisting only if you are listed as spammer. Delisting from other lists is free. Prove that they made mistake, make sure that your server is not abused or vulnerable and they will remove you.

    So you are spammer or your address was used by spammer and you haven't checked that address when provider assigned it to you.

    the fact that company forced upgrade to new browser version through automatic OS updates is bad example? IE7 is new feature and not security update. It is not required. IE7 might be better than IE6, but Microsoft does not have the right to abuse its OS position to push new product. If IE7 is pushed as security update, all regular users will install it without questioning legitimacy and consequences of this upgrade.

    IE7 update is not about security. It is about stopping users transition to alternative browsers.

    IE7 is a high-priority security update that is supposed to happen by default. Where is the logic of refusing to do security updates that would keep your machine from being infected, so that you can run the software that would detect the infection?
    Windows Genuine Advantage Notification was high priority update too. Are you sure that IE7 is security fix and not some unstable new thing convicted monopolist wants to push to end users?

    Some people use database abstraction libraries and are not locked to MySQL.

    For a thought experiment, it would be fun to force RMS to run a company producing some hardware for a while.

    Chaintech - old motherboards are not supported. No video drivers for builtin 7AIV S3 ProSavage video card. Last VIA KM133 drivers cause black screen on Win98.

    HP - HP Deskjet 1125c. Windows XP drivers are not available, because Windows XP includes drivers for this printer. Included driver sucks when compared with Win2k HP drivers and users use win2k drivers on winxp even when these drivers have quirks. Official HP response - use standard winxp driver. HP ColorLaserJet 3550 - no drivers for Vista and WinXP64. 64 bit drivers are only for IA64.

    If you have to maintain older machines or support low end hardware, you know that drivers must be open. RMS and Theo de Raadt are right about open drivers.

    If you want software examples - compare PhotoShop Elements 2, Photoshop Elements 5 and Photoshop itself. Try using older CorelDRAW when others use newer version. Get CDR viewer or CorelDRAW Essentials that work with CDR X3 format. Read and modify docx and xlsx documents. Compare Domino or Exchange IMAP implimentation with Cyrus or Courier.

    Work some time as system admin on restricted budget and you will start disliking COTS.
