  1. And hence tax it? on Auerbach on Internet Cruft · · Score: 1
Sure, most of this stuff never makes it past the filters in my demarcation routers, much less past my inner firewalls. But it does burn a lot of resources. Not only do those useless packets burn bits on my access links, but they also waste bits, routing cycles, and buffers on every hop that those useless packets traverse.

Conspiracy to support the tax theorists in Florida?

You gotta remember when someone says windows is bad, it is the internal design not the outer GUI, which is good and the sole reason why windows is popular among the non-geek end users. I dont see why it is bad to imitate the user friendly features of it while keeping the strong internals of linux.

A similar action by talkcity.com about 4 years ago killed the activity in its chat rooms, wonder if Microsoft will let that happen or use strong arm techniques to keep the users!

  8. What about the advantage MSN Messenger has? on FCC Lifts AOL IM Limits · · Score: 5, Interesting
In January 2001, the FCC ruled that the combination of AOL and Time Warner could pose problems for competitors trying to develop their own IM products. Regulators and rivals were concerned that combining AOL's leading Internet subscriber base with Time Warner's entertainment content and regional cable monopoly would create an unfair advantage in the market.

Microsoft bundles the MSN messenger with their OS getting an unfair advantage over the other IM providers. Most workplaces don't allow their employees to install any software on them, thus they turn to MSN messenger which is already on their Windows systems. Has the FCC done anything to stop Microsoft from doing that? Anyone know?

Unless you are damn sure your PhD topic is what you want to work on its probably not worth it, but then if you end up working in the University after that you still have considerable flexibility. The problem would be if you want to get into the industry and find a 'job', some companies will invariably consider you to be over qualified mostly due to insecurities of the company (you might leave or be more qualified than your boss and hence have lesser respect for him yada yada..)

I have a master's myself and have been contemplating a PhD, but haven't been able to make the move due to the doubts regarding my need for it

For e.g.,

    2. Computer in your car.
