seriously, UT Austin put up those notes a long long time ago (i think last year), soon after djikstra's passing away. it's sad when salon puts a tribute to that a year later...

Yes, you know your own answer. You just posted on slashdot to get affirmation.

Don't even think about anything else. I have owned/operated a ton of them. Except for the 600 series and their infamous battery problems, IBM laptops are nearly perfect. They do generally have weaker graphics systems then their counterpart, but I have never really had to use the latest graphics or anything like that. However, they invest a lot of money on design: I love their trackpoint. Remember, they were the first company to implement them. Now, it seems most companies offer that option. IMHO, a trackpoint is much easier to use then a heat and/or pressure sensitive input device.

If you need a clean looking, high performing, low mantainence, ergonomic keyboard and mice, IBM is the answer. WARNING: if you need the latest and greatest graphics, IBM is NOT your answer.

I am so sorry, I am not completely sold out on the Open Source mechanism. I mean the solutions are good, but they aren't great (yet). Before you flame me, the above mentioned triad solution do not provide many features found in other enterprise level software. They are also quite slow (overall). The only Open Source solution that performs at an enterprise level is Apache.

When you are a BIG-ASS, Inc. you care little if you save a million on licensing fees, if your software is guaranteed to work. i.e., Oracle, IBM, BEA. (And yes, if they could save money and get 8 sigma uptime...they'll use Open Source software) Plus, there are a billion more folks who know this stuff then the ones who know Open Source solutions.

Yes, these alternate ideas are great for small companies, but, they don't contribute to the massive licensing profits.

And, please let's not go over this one more time: Open Source software is good. And, CTOs aren't all dumb. They *do* want to save money -- you know.

From Stroustrup's C++ Style and Technique FAQ:

In C++ main() need not contain an explicit return statement. In that case, the value returned is 0, meaning successful execution.

    Insightful? How about karma-whoring non-sense!

What about the *hardware*? It would be nice if the gov't dropped the campaign donations in favor of legislation requiring compatible hardware on all networks.

Well, many of these different providers use different wireless architecture/networks (CDMA, TDMA, GSM, etc.) making incompatibly impossibly unless you want to purchase 3-mode and 4-mode phones. Which would make them expensive, defeating the whole purpose of saving cost.

Now, there are many providers who share the same artchitectures, for example: T-Mobile and part of both ATT and Cingular (GSM), Cellular One and part of ATT (TDMA), Verizon and Sprint (CDMA), so those phones should be made compatible. And, for the most part they are, you just have to open it up and flash it with a new list of "preferred" providers (ie, contact towers).

BTW, do accept my apologies, if you didn't know that.
