I think a better summary would be that this is not entirely a new protocol. Rather, it's a variant on TCP with changes to the window increasing portion of the code. Basically, they claim that there currently exists an unfairness in allocation of bandwidth of two connections sharing a pipe. Basically that having different round trip times causes them to share the bandwidth unfairly. Their protocol supposedly alleviates this problem in high bandwidth pipes whereas TCP does not.

Screw that! We need more programmers aware of vulnerabilities in systems and to be able to deal with it. Dumbing down a language at the expensive of performance is only going to dumb down the programmers. Well, to a point. My ideal programming language would be something that allows me to do practically anything with it and leaving its internals exposed. You can program with a safe subset if you're beginning, but you can then expand to advanced programming without the language limiting what you can do.

Would it be possible to adapt this type of lens to eyewear by enlarging the size? Instead of using bifocals or trifocals, you might be able to have just one lens that changes shape according to a microcontroller, which is then hooked to either a button, or perhaps tapped into a nerve, which can then be trained to send the appropriate signals.

The problem is, XP is already loaded with lots of pretty graphics and effects. There IS a reason why the version number change between Windows 2000 and Windows XP was so small. Now, XP does have a few nice things here and there which I like, but not enough to upgrade to it. Windows 2000 still works fine for me.

With the advent of object oriented programming, and all the higher level implementation ideas, being able to program something like a C64 using assembly is starting to border on the level of a wizard. It's kinda sad, really. People just plopping down code blocks without realizing how bloated things have become. This is why I like embedded programming a lot more than the standard "software development" type programming out there.

There really wouldn't be much of an effect. I gather a lot of people on Slashdot don't visit the sites anyways. In any case, the strength of a Slashdot effect is due to the fact that all of a sudden, the number of visitors (per time frame) increases many times as to overwhelm the servers. In order to notice this type of effect, the change in the number of people visiting must be comparable in magnitude to the number of people already visiting. A negative Slashdot effect won't work on these pages because the majority of people who visit them aren't Slashdot regulars, so you won't see an appreciable drop in volume.

From the article, it seems that it was not synthesizing the singing from scratch, but was rather using a complicated sample set to recreate the voice. What I thought they were going to do was bring to fruition physically-based synthesis of the human voice. By the way, using a sample set IMO is going to reduce the amount of expression you can get with a song, especially if one were to use a very limited set of samples. And I really hope I don't start hearing the SAME VOICE in every freaking song because of this.
