Your computer didn't beat you at chess, a programmer did.

When you have a computer that can beat you at chess without having a chess program installed, it's time to be concerned.

The number of machines being turned into zombies every month make it pretty obvious that many users don't know how to protect their computers from attack.

What do you see your company doing to make PC's running Windows products more secure right out of the box and to keep them secure with little or no input from the user?

  5. Switch back to freon based insulation? on NASA's Shuttle Plans · · Score: 1

It's my understanding that they didn't have these problems with the old freon based insulation. Even though we know freon is not the most environmentally friendly substance known to man should NASA be allowed to use it for the few shuttle's they launch every year? What are we willing to trade to maintain the ability to put people into orbit? It seems that switching back to the old formula and limiting shuttle launches would buy time to research a workable alternative to the freon based foam without losing our ability to get people and supplies into orbit or to the Space Station.

  6. Is this a short sighted goal? on Countries Plan Land Rush in Warming Arctic · · Score: 2, Interesting

I wonder what will happen if this warming trend only lasts ten or fifteen years and then the ice closes back in. Will they find enough natural resources that are worth risking having the returning ice crush millions of dollars worth of equipment if the temperature starts to drop again?.

It is nice to think that there are still people out there who are so eager to explore this new area. As I watch people going to the front window in our office to trigger the remote starters on their cars (it's 20F here today) I can hardly imagine being able to find enough people to fill a helicopter that would be willing to brave that kind of extreme weather!

Well the first thing I would suggest is that DSL and Cable companies explain to users that they should have a firewall and some up-to-date antivirus software installed!
Allowing them to get online without understanding the risks is NOT doing them a favor. A large percentage of computers that I have seen come in for service belong to people who don't understand that they are vulnerable. When you explain things to them they ask "Why didn't my DSL provider tell me this?". Now they are facing paying for some security software and the repair bill.
