It was microsoft that screwed all this up with VisualBasic and VisualStudio. So now after screwing up programming with their IDE's(and those being called a step forward) there making another step forward by going back to the way just about everyone else does it?

Theres a far cry from forcing cell phone companies to do something almost impossible and going bankrupt vs a fuse costing a few cents or a ground costing a few dollars.

Before we make cell phone companies make bullet proof towers why don't we make hurrican proof houses? That would save a hell of a lot more lives. Disaster strikes and the first thing you people think about is cell phones?

Sometimes it's the opposite. Installing my ati all in wonder in win98 consisted of this:
Installing a /different/ pci vga card in the pci slot where i was putting the ati card. Start the installation process. Reboot, remove old vga card and install ati card. Install some more software, reboot. Installation worked most of the time, but not all and was very easy to screw up and involved about 3 different installation programs. When I installed mandrake 8.2 all I had to do was choose whether I wanted 3d accell or not. That was it, it was all working when the installation of mandrake was finished. No drivers were made for Win2000/XP that I know of, if they were it was YEARS afterward.

Installing SB Live was a simple as turning the computer off, putting the card in and turning it back on. I didn't have to do anything else, not even click ok. It was set up and made default when mandrake came back on. Never tried using the card on windows.

Just recently my POS SB live died. So I took it out and installed my 14 year old ISA aztech sound card. I had to read through the documentation for the kernel and set two settings when loading the module. I'm sure searching on the internet would have told me the same thing. Setting this sound card up in win98 involved between 12-15 settings that had to be correct(more settings that the documentation mentioned.) Not to mention that the only way to tell it was working was when windows came up with a message telling me to turn of the computer and install the sound card. Any other message and it wasn't working. Not to mention it would constantly try to load sblaster clone drivers everytime I rebooted. I had to leave them installed but disabled. God knows what XP would do with this card.

Or you could have used a distro that includes ATI's driver. There really isn't much of a point in using ATI's driver unless you want to play one of the dozen or so video games available for linux that requires it. Otherwise the opensource 3d driver is better. Faster 2d, more stable and faster at most simple 3d apps.

My brothers fiance has been using my linux computer a little bit to get on ebay without any assistance whatsover, she just uses it sometimes during the day. I can just tell because she leaves the browser open. On the otherhand, she couldn't use the macs at her university without me holding her hand, this was after I figured it out, not having used macs in a long time.

A lot of things are fairly counterintuitive on macs. Little different colored buttons for window operations aren't intuitive at all. The icons along the bottom for starting programs only work if you know what icon you need, etc.

I have no problems whatsoever running multiple sessions of gnome, kde, etc at the same time. It runs firefox, compiles software, openoffice, eclipse, encoding music/dvd's, burning cds, etc and whatever apps I feel like running at the same time. Well, burning cds will make it a little bit slower but otherwise it's still more than useable.

And it does this with more responsiveness than my mom's p4 running WinXP trying to run a single app. Granted the XP box is 'saddled' down with instant messengers and other stupid little programs but why on earth do people use this as an excuse for poor performance? Instant messaging and gator slowing down performance of such a fast machine is a joke. My linux box is also running postfix, dhcp server, dns server, apache, etc also. And I could open up multiple sessions of gnome/kde and fill them up with every damn instant messenger and other stupid little accessory and still not lose and performance. And this is with no swap!

In otherwords, don't be afraid to run X on your athlon 500. You may need to put your swapspace in an intelligent spot since you only have 256mb(I don't know if I'd run kde or gnome much lower than that, but then again I haven't tried either). I don't know why people insist on putting their swap right at the end of a 200gb hard drive (with all their apps installed at the beginning) and then bitch about thrashing as the hard drive runs back and forth constantly...

Average rent for a 1 bedroom apartment anywhere within a 45 minute drive of dc during rush hour is around $1000/mo. Anything less than that is in a very crappy area. By the time decent 1 bedroom apts get to around 800/mo your in suburbs with hardly any work around unless you want to work it mcdonalds. Your about 3-4 hours out by the time it's possible to find any apartments under 600 regardless of size or condition.

Mass transit is expensive around here too, it would cost me over 400/mo to commute from where i live to alexandria, which is over twice what i pay for insurance and gas combined. I'm willing to bet a lot of other areas are the same.

1 and a half drive would get you maybe 20-30 miles in this area during rush hour, not to sure exactly though. If there's a bridge involved it's gonna be atleast 15 minutes for a mile, usually longer. I've never been on the woodrow wilson bridge during traffic yet(thank god) so i don't know what that's like.

Well guess what, some dumbass POS yuppies managed to kill themselves because the stop sign that'd been there since the road was there suddenly disappeared. No, the kids involved had to be charged and convicted of involuntary manslaughter of some degree. They had NO INTENT to kill of course.
