"The "official" lifespan of a cassette is somewhere between 10-15 years. Though much like a compact disc it's longevity can be promoted through good storage."
Storage time, or being used?
I had tapes blow up after the span of just over a year back when I used tapes.
Whatever you do, no matter what, AVOID MANAGED.COM.
I've never had such downtime, or such aweful support than my couple months using managed.com
Durring my time there, our leased server was down more than up, we got ignored for days on end, and lost all the data we had on the server. No chance ever for backups, since the machien was never up.
If ylou need further proof, google it up. I am not alone in my pain.
Right now the good talent is spread out. When we see these players merging, maybe bringing the talent all under one roof, will see some magical results.
Well, they aren't a rapidly growing company . . .

You're such a sweetheart.
All this time, I thought all OSes sucked.
How many web servers do I need?
I already have netBSD running a web server on my toaster!

Nothing on the horizon. Nothing really has the size efficiency, and quality of DVDs and CD.
I could go for smaller discs though.
Same quality, but 1" discs.
I'd worry about losing them though.
It was only a matter of time before this format fell out of favor.
It has a very limited life.
The audio qualiy is poor
and it has a very inefficient size and shape
Oh well, RIP cassette tape.

Most are blissfully ignorant to our government's lagging in the computer technology area. They just want big brother to make things all better.
How else am I supposed to maintain the stigma of being big fat american if I don't eat junk food at every opportunity?
Real put Real out of business. Mostly because they have been putting out bloated shitware for years.
Nice solid slashdotter answer.
True, and completely useless. You even managed to underhandedly bash windows.
Very sly.
Agreed.
Most of the public doesn't care enough to go through the effort of "upgrading?" to a less OS.
Best they could hope for would be it to be available on new PCs. But even then, it's just costing the manufacturers by having to offer this option.
Oh well, it was a good idea. . .
Yeah, I'll man the wave rider and tow you out there. :)
Be sure to have your will all sorted before you go.
Oh, so perfect for the /. crowd? :)

That's just not how we do things here.
Why help others, when you can screw even more?!

I fully endorse another trip to the moon.
I'd even donate money to the venture.
I have to say it was really nice to wake up this morning and have my system ready to reboot after it installed the patches.
Hands off security.
Yummy.
I have a VCR and a DVD player in my entertainment center.
Why?
Because my crappy 19" TV only has coax input. So I need the VCR to use as a breakout box to move from the different cable types.
If it weren't for the TV I use every so often, I'd have tossed my VCR years ago.
Last time I watched a VHS tape by choice?
December 2000.
