    Oh the memories of making my friend puke durring late night system tuning sessions in my shop

    Was setting out a 50Hz tones at near full output and he spewed all over the floor of the shop.

    Who would have thought 6, 10" subs would have done so much?

    I am sure the slashdot crew are the only people that could make the solution involve Linux and 50 open source applications.

    If this system got hacked, you could potentially gather information on someone, like you were sitting over thier shoulder watching, because you are!

    I am a middle of the road geek, in the war zone that is the Silicon Forest. (Portland, Oregon USA)
    I do not have an option to work less. Living in the state with the highest unemployment rate in the union, you do what you have to. To myself I am a very valuable person, who is an asset to any company I am employed by. The fact is that I was one of tens of thousands of geeks looking for work a month ago. Now I am employed, and I will do anything including give up free time, and some civil liberties to keep in the land of the self supporting.

    • So I . . .
    • Work when I am told
    • Do more than is asked for, leaving my employer in my debt
    • Waive my right to free time, and a personal life at times

    Life is tough, but even more so when you are a geek below the poverty level.

    Western governments are based on trust. You trust that the person you elect is going to take care of your needs. The more people that agree with you, the better chances that person has of being elected into power. Fortunately there are safeguards against public beatings being legal. I do feer for my right to arm myself at times though. But the rule of "Cold Dead Fingers" comes into play.

    Can anyone vouch for the CSS support in Safari?

    I know IE on pc is pretty poor, Opera and Mozilla a bit better. Opera being the better out of that pair. Sites like this and especially this. Come up looking pretty winky some times. I will have my powerbook back running soon, I hope there is a browser will take care of my needs.

    To take your theme of economic downturn to the next level, think of the great projects that stumble and limp along slower and slower as people are forced to stick with what is making them money. I would love to contribute all sorts of resources to many projects, but I have to support my eating habit.

    I can't The Planet any more highly. They have some very competitive rates, and they are very proffesional. I have some web space for a client there, and just yesterday bought a hosted server off of them. I remomend them to all my clients as well.

    I agree. There is a common bond that the open source community has. Even if people don't agree as to how to get it done, we're going the same place.

    I wonder what teh open Source world would be like if more camps joined forces, and worked together?

    I just spent $7800 for the hospital to put 2 screw in my arm, and am still being told I will most likely never straighten my arm out again.

    I would gladly have spent 3 or 4 times that, to just improve my odds of throwing a baseball once more.

    I can't wait for Star Trek style medical prcedure where a broken bone is just an annoyance until the good doctor can run an LED flashlight over my skin./p

    How many people who have an opinion, on average, have a clue what's going on?

    I mean, so what if they don't want something? if the government feels it is in the best interests of the people, and it is reasonable, I say go for it. I carry 2 pieces of government issued ID in my wallet. (Drivers Lic and Concealed Handgun permit.) I would love to make that just one.

    If you want to really go extreme, check out the boomershoot!
    No matter how you cut it, 700 Meters is a long shot. (The target was a 1 litrecontainer),
    and this makes a really big explosion.

    Of course if a $1200 USD rifle and $1.70 USD per shot is too much. You can also geocache!

    I use google because it finds me what I want.
    I use IE AND Opera because they work better than most other browsers.
    I use Win2k, WinXP, OSX, and FreeBSD because I use what works.

    Why does everything have to be such a huge, "MS is evil!" thing?

    After spending years finding grammatical errors in the English books, statistical and chronological errors in the history books, and mathematical errors in the math books, can it get any worse?P

    Schools are a very deeply rooted in old school ways. It is going to take a long time, and a lot of baby steps to bring them to where people will be happy with them and also be effective. If open sourced books can bring some better quality and save some money, while opening schools up to the idea of a different way to do business, I am all for it.
