No, they have the right to employ proprietary business methods independently of their contributions to open source. Said contributions are "above and beyond" in common parlance.
Sharing works protected under copyright which you do not own is infringement.
The only people who try to determine the distribution rights of the works of others are, of course, the pirates. I'm not sure if that qualifies as irony, but it sure makes me laugh.
Where in the story was it promised this was shocking? We all get that you're a supergenius who could run the entire technology sector single-handed and better than it's done now, but those of us who understand that the Cell chip isn't even the point here might be interested in what's coming next, you know?
There is a (large? certainly vocal) group of people on this site who believe that "innovation" means "I get to use everyone's work" and that a system that encourages people to come up with their own solutions to problems is somehow stifling creativity.
One has to assume a misapprehension of simple definitional reality this blatant is deliberate cognitive dissonance.
These days patents are exactly what they always have been - a great incentive to innovate. Our vibrant and expanding marketplace is definitive proof of this.
I know it's popular to believe that if only we made massive, unproven changes to a working system it would somehow magically become better, but I've not seen one lick of proof that this is true, just frothy rage from people crying "freedom!"
What scares me is the possibility that you honestly believe that anyone who doesn't bear hatred for Microsoft is somehow being paid to hold that opinion. It speaks to an arrogance I find astonishing.
Problem or not, the simple fact is that you can't halt progress, even when you believe it's in the "best interest."
There's also the simple fact that neither you nor anyone else is qualified to judge what is in everyone's best interest. You simply don't have predictive power, no matter how closely you hold your beliefs.
If they're falsified and no longer used to make predictions, then they simply aren't referenced except in historical contexts. The presence of a bad guess in the past has no power to make a good guess in the present any more factual.
Straying way the fuck off topic, huh? I guess you can't keep your bile in long enough to save it for an appropriate topic.
I'm not trying to address any of your points. I couldn't care less about getting involved in the sniping battle over which corporations get favored by the US gov't (and be sure, the only difference between Democrats & Republicans is which group of rich people gets the big bucks).
You don't really convince people with your type of rhetoric. You just make them defensive. Being an example is a lot more important and effective than hijacking a topic on the internet to spew vitriol.
Of course, this be Slashdot, where everyone thinks they know how everyone else oughta think. Including myself. It's the poetry of life, I suppose.
I don't know why I even bothered with this reply. I'm probably just tired and I should have skipped it. Oh fucking well.
Assuming you're not trolling, why would you say Deus Ex was for kids? The only reason I can fathom is because it's a game, which pretty much invalidates your entire comment.
Since copyrights and patents are a legally granted right to monopoly I have a hard time swallowing that it's the opposite of the original intention. I'll agree that the abuse isn't good, and the current time limits are perverse, but the whole point is to eliminate competition for specific works to increase the profit potential and hence the motivation to create more works.
If you're capable of passing judgment on the worth of the lives of others, yet too cowardly to log in to do so, does that make you more or less worthwhile than the parent?

Amazing amounts of hatred. Truly groundbreaking.

I laughed
You should program on paper and compile in your head.
The only reliable formula for success in any endeavor is to keep trying till it works.
Why do you assume anything about the situation? It's all meaningless speculation that can never, ever be proven one way or the other.
The same logic that lead a European to make pronouncements on "most US broadband" which is something clearly outside the scope of his experience.

Of course, the old fashioned "case the house" still works, unless you're so paranoid you hire doppelgangers to drive away in your car.

The important thing to remember is that mentioning race does not make one a racist.
The truth is simple: there is no homogenous Slashdot standard. This isn't a hivemind, it's a forum.

Exactly, no patches in Apache...
The summary has a definite pro-pedophilia slant. I'm not entirely sure I like that.
No, it's more like your inability to understand a simple distinction.
They're all controlled falls. Try doing any of those things without using gravity.
