I think that the benefits of the source-based approach are best reaped from a setup of multiple machines, with not-too-different hardware.
At the University, the Sysadmins rolled out gentoo... basically they optimize, compile on the idle cycles of a big server, and roll out those binaries to the workstations. Great setup.
What I expect from this is: the study gets entered as evidence on the RIAA lawsuits so they can't claim you owe them more money than you and your children will make on your entire lives for each uploaded file.
But don't think this legitimizes copyrighted work sharing. It's still wrong, folks. The fact that it doesn't hurt nearly as bad as the RIAA would have us believe doesn't make it any righter.
So, if you want to do your closed source software with Qt, you can pay through the nose. However, if you develop GPL software you are free and free. Like with GTK, right?
Never did this kind of thing before the DOJ? While I don't have the info handy (and too lazy to look it up) anybody worth more than a billion would be more than encouraged to give to charity by his accountant. I don't think the richest man in the world (or the richest man in the world's accountant) didn't feel like giving to charity was better than giving to the IRS.
I would have expected them to say MSOffice has lower TCO or higher ROI than OOo, at least trumpet "Office is better". But no, all we get is "Don't you DARE switch from MSOffice or ALL THIS will happen to you!".
Ah, Microsoft is feeling the heat the free software community is lighting under their asses.
Yup. The problem is, if you mod them up funny (so that it doesn't amass karma bonus) later mods might not take it seriously, and might get overrated mods.
Maybe "-1, stolen" and "+1, whistleblower" mods could work, with the whistleblower mod not adding any karma.
Here's hoping we get an all-SVG desktop years before MS, and leave windows biting the dust of the now-too-small-to-see icons by way of better and better monitors.
I might be speaking out of my ass as usual, but isn't DeBeers based in South Africa?
On further investigation, their on website says the DeBeers Trading Group is based in London, but the corporate headquarters are in Johanesburg. Go figure:)
Now, if the US enters into a treaty that is in direct opposition to the Constitution, which document wins? I have no idea if this issue in Constitutional law has ever been addressed.
It would serve as a legally binding way of proving the country's congress is a band of drooling morons, as, in most civilized countries, such treaties signed by the executive must be approved by congress. (like, for example, Free Trade Agreements)
This is bullshit. That's not a linux issue. That's a non-computer savvy person issue. My mom can't install anything on the computer, not when we had windows, not now after the switch to OsX.
You just carry your laptop in a laptop case and tell the guy that it's your work laptop.
Be sure to "customize" it a little bit, put a different background than default, put a few prop files around, make it look like it's not factory bare hdd. Sometimes customs makes you boot it, so it better not look like its brand spankin' new (i.e. no "first time" wizards and that).
Howard Stern: "How can you say I'm the antichrist when Christ and I have so much in common? We both are thirty-something Jews with long hair and in problems with authority. He had his 12 disciples, I've got my team. Moreover, I'm bigger than Jesus. I'm sindicated all over the country. What market share did he have outside of Galilee?"
Seems like the Sony in Sony Ericsson got them some quality. Everybody and his uncle has a broken Ericsson phone in this country (cheap plastic crap, the 'Ericsson-only' phones).
Conversely, my current phone (nokia 3320) survived a four story fall with nothing but a cracked shell, easily replaceable. Dropped too many times, never anything but scratches.
Great! Now all we need is a company that will invest its resources in a KILLER GAME that only runs in 5% of all the desktops, and it locks out ON PURPOSE the other 90%. I can just see it:
Hair splitting? Absolutely, but hey, it's a SCO story ;)
Duh, it SAYS it's a joke :D
I did use gentoo and liked it a lot. my gentoo install spanned three workdays :)
(one for the first stages and emerge X mozilla, another for emerge gnome kde and another for emerge openoffice)
But it IS a pain in the ass to wait for a compile when you NEED something pronto.
Gentoo Linux: Because life is too long to waste on windows reboots, but long enough to 'emerge openoffice'. (laugh, it's a joke!)

No, kill it because steaks are good!
(why yes, I _did_ feel like burning some karma today, thank you :)

Yeah! Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice... emmm... err... ummm... won't get fooled again!
So shame on y'all for getting fooled twice ;)
Seriously, the day he sues SCO for being full of crap is the day I'll forgive him...
Da-dum-ching!
Of course, as always, I might be full of shit :)
Anyway, throwing Balmer out a window has a certain poetic justice to it :)
Welcome(tm) to the MSinternet as envisioned by Steve Balmer. Don't forget to be a good person and buy some MS stuff!
And, of course, got kicked in the mods for suggesting that ;)
Ah, Microsoft is feeling the heat the free software community is lighting under their asses.
Got any of that "Ronson Fast Lite" left?
Maybe "-1, stolen" and "+1, whistleblower" mods could work, with the whistleblower mod not adding any karma.
Now mod me offtopic :s
At least until longhorn...

No, I did. He's the one who picked my pocket!

Never tried a Siemens.
Hate Motorolas. Worst. Interface. Ever.
You have some hangups and traumas about planet/giant mammal porn, methinks.
I, for one, like the new logo, but I don't know what does it say about my planet fetish...
1.- Develop a game locking out 90% of the market.
2.- ???
3.- Profit!
