  1. Re:OK, I give up...what is it? on Apple Open Sources Grand Central Dispatch · · Score: 3, Informative

There's a decent article on wikipedia about it. Basically, it's Apple's multithreading algorithms.

Your statement, sir, is not insightful, it is the statement of someone who knows not of what they speak.

Actually, sir, my statement was not a statement, it was a question. Sir.

  3. Re:What would these kids grow up to be? on Schooling, Homeschooling, and Now, "Unschooling" · · Score: 4, Interesting

I know plenty of dishwashers who graduated high school and several, in this economy, have college degrees. At what point do we say that no matter how you progress through school, there may come a time when you are at the bottom rung for one reason or another?

I should have added the disclaimer that I was a dishwasher for years in my teens. I was also damned good at it, and I think that part of the reason was the learned discipline to focus on a boring and unpleasant task. And while that's a backhanded compliment at formal education, it's a real and tangible benefit.

  4. Re:What would these kids grow up to be? on Schooling, Homeschooling, and Now, "Unschooling" · · Score: 1

Given the number of children in the current system that aren't remotely prepared...?

A fair comment, but is taking them out of the system entirely going to somehow prepare them?

  5. What would these kids grow up to be? on Schooling, Homeschooling, and Now, "Unschooling" · · Score: 2, Insightful

"Unschooling: For those kids who aspire to be the dish washers of the future"

But seriously, is there any less way to be prepared for higher education (higher, meaning anything from 3rd grade on up)?

  6. Re:GNR? on Wired's 2007 Vaporware Awards · · Score: 1

Meh. I heard some of the "leaked" mp3 tracks, and....they pretty much thoroughly sucked.

  7. Aquarius Records in San Francisco on How Do You Find New Non-RIAA Music? · · Score: 1

First, the disclaimer - I don't really pay attention to what is or isn't RIAA music.

That said, for anyone looking to discover something off the beaten path, sign up for the newsletter offered by the fine folks at Aquarius Records. I've found more good new music there than I have in all other places combined. It's not the biggest record shop in the Bay Area, but it's the coolest, and you're bound to find something you've never heard of.

You're probably overlooking a lot of great music in your quest for great sound.

More likely, he's just not buying in the downloadable marketplace. If it's lossless compression (or no compression) he's looking for, the answer is at your nearest CD/record store. It's doubtful that he's missing out on anything.

  14. If you're in the area, go! on Roswell UFO Festival · · Score: 3, Informative

Seriously - if you're in the general area (as much as THAT can be said in New Mexico), go to Roswell. My wife and I stopped by during the 50th anniversary and had a blast. It's a cute town, and when it's overrun by UFO nuts and X-Files fans, it's just plain silly.

  15. Don't bother repeating on Graduate with Bad Grades or Repeat a Year? · · Score: 4, Interesting

The only time grades matter is in getting your first job. After that, references and a good resume will be all you need. I didn't have great grades when I finished school - it made getting my foot in the door for that first job harder, but since then, I've been offered every position I've applied for. What matters most is if you're good at what you do.

  17. Re:Garbage in garbage out on CD Music Sales Down 20% In Q1 2007 · · Score: 1

I've certainly bought fewer CD's in Q1 than I did in recent Q's....But that's not a surprise - there simply haven't been any new releases of interest lately. Last year was an outstanding year for new music, but so far this year has been a dud. Has nothing to do with file sharing.

  18. Bethesda's past on From Football to Fantasy - Bethesda's Long Journey · · Score: 2, Funny

To me, the pinnacle of Bethesda's works were in the early 90's, with the "Wayne Gretzky Hockey" franchise. This was the first hockey simulator that had decent intelligence and actually played like hockey rather than a videogame. My college friends and myself marveled at the quality of this game, and lost some much-needed study time with it.

As a side note, the third version of WGH was so bug-ridden that for many years I refused to buy another Bethesda product. Of course, now I realize that shipping a buggy release is less than uncommon.

  19. Just had this debate over the weekend on Do Electric Sheep Dream of Civil Rights? · · Score: 1

My wife and I were discussing this same topic after watching an episode of Nova. Specifically, would it be "cruel" to kick a robot that reacts hurt or upset in the same way that it's cruel to kick a cat*? Would it be less cruel if the robot were programmed to simply ignore being kicked? Is it simply our perception of the robot's reaction that would make us feel "guilty"?

My wife's interesting answer really didn't have anything to do with the topic, but rather questioned our human tendency to want to kick something.

    * Ignoring the obvious that it's fun to kick a cat.

Well, good for them....I guess. I would imagine that the US would do the same to Chinese spy satellites (if they had any - which I don't know and don't feel like googling), so why be surprised when the Chinese do it? It seems to me that this is just a case of the Chinese government acting in the interests of it's own national security. This may be news, but it should not be surprising.
