In the last 10 years I've lost 4 friends to AIDS. Two were gay. One had an unhealthy relationship with IV drugs. We still don't know how the last one contracted it.

Two close relatives have died, and one more is currently living with being HIV+.

I'm sorry if you don't believe me. Doesn't matter if you do or don't. Was just putting in my two cents.

  2. Tired of hearing it on Human Blood May Contain A Cure For AIDS · · Score: 2, Insightful

Seems like every six months or so now, there's some new research promising new hope for AIDS.
I really hope that this turns into something, but until one of these new finds turns into a cure or at least a vaccine I'll still be seeing freinds die.
I'm just sick of hearing of new breakthroughs and then not hearing another word about them.

Seriously, because child porn is such an emotional issue, everyone tends to leap without looking. Sadly this results in a lot of false accusations and lives ruined. Because these charges are so serious, officials must take more time before jumping to conclusions over any accusation.

  4. Same in every market. on Bad Security Driving Out the Good · · Score: 1

With security products, things become harder because there's no easy way to tell if it is working. If there's never an attempt to steal the data or hack the server, or if the attempt goes unnoticed, then it appears everything is working great.

If it weren't for OEM software being installed on machines before the sale, MS would have gone under already. I think it's likely that while pirate copies are hurting sales, most of the people buying pirated copies wouldn't have shelled out for the real thing. Even if Vista's copy protection had been 100% bulletproof, sales would still be dismally low. XP is a fairly solid operating system, and Vista is failing to bring anything new to the table. The desire to upgrade simply isn't there.

It would seem to me that the disabled, blind or otherwise would be more prone to use internet services to begin with. The fact that retailers haven't seen this and adapted already is interesting into itself.

Seriously, it's about time that fines were imposed against the companies that propagate this. People who suffer actual damages from these programs should start bringing lawsuits against them.

OK, first of all if you want me to feel sorry for poor multi-billion dollar companies having to spend an extra $100 per year on a domain name you're barking up the wrong tree.
Secondly you miss the whole point of the domain. It wasn't to push the porn companies into their own little room and lock them in like a cell by mandating that all porn reside only there.
The objections raised to that domain were mainly that it would proliferate porn on the net which is absolutely silly. How many people are out there saying "Gee, I'd love to create a porn site, but I won't do it since there's not a domain just for that."
The .xxx domain was canned because of silly puritanical moral objections and nothing more. That alone should show how much this really has to do with free speech.

  13. Unlikely on Will the U.S. Lose Control of the Internet? · · Score: 1, Insightful

With things in the US going the way they are, I think the freedom of speech argument is moot. This seems to be more about maintaining control then preserving freedom. I'm guessing there will be tons of arguments on both sides, but in the end we will pressure them into leaving control right where it is now.
Personally I believe that the internet would be better served by the release of control, and I can't site any better evidence for this then the whole debate over the .xxx domain.

I wasn't going to buy the 360 as soon as I did, but Oblivion was the driving factor for me. I certainly don't claim it's for everybody, but I've gotten my money's woth out of it.

They may not be exclusives, but then not everyone enjoys PC gaming.
I stopped playing games on the pc years ago because:
    1. I got sick of having to buy video cards that cost twice what I paid to build the rest of the box.
    2. I was tired of dealing with driver issues with new game releases.
    3. I now prefer to play games on my 52" TV as opposed to my 19" PC screen. And yes, I know I can hook a PC up to my TV as well, but a keyboard and mouse simply don't work well on a sofa.

As for the PS3, it's major downsides for me are size and price, both of which are oddly close to a compact car.

PC gaming is great for some, but most folks just don't want those kinds of headaces.
