I feel pretty bad for this kid. After all, he will never have a normal life. I've known a genius who burnt out and worked a crappy job. I'm not saying that will happen with this kid, but I fear that there is a strong chance that he will crack at some point. Imagine living your whole life around people who are so much "slower" than you that they might as well be retarded for all intents and purposes.
He will likely relate to adults better than kids, which is going to be hard because so many will envy him. There will be many who are threatened by his precociousness. Think of Good Will Hunting x 20. He will never know what it is to have a normal life and that may cause him to envy "normal" people to an extent.
That being said, I really hope he does well and can find a good core group of people who will guide him and treat him well. This kind of makes me think that reincarnation truly happens....
I can see how someone might draw the same conclusions as the author. Most of the arguments have been repeated on/. time and time again. I think the mistake is believing that FOSS doesn't innovate as much as commercial software. A lot of software innovates very little -- many solutions commercial software "creates" are implied by the problem domain. Commercial software has serious flaws -- like the idea that you have to upgrade to a new, more expensive version to get certain fixes. With FOSS you can get the upgrades and fixes for free. Why should you pay the mistakes of the designers!? I've always thought that should be criminal.
Yes there are some unique ideas out there if you are looking from a pure syntax point of view. It's not the syntax that's important, it's the fact that it is created in SOME form to solve a specific set of problems. CSS is a solution to certain problems with HTML. Was it really the best or only way to go about solving the problem? Not necessarily, but enough people have supported it for it to slowly spread.
Most of this so-called capitalistic "innovation" is only called that because people THINK they got there first. Many times they are applying old ideas to new problems in uniquely modified ways. Before HTTP there was Gopher. You think MacOS and Windows were UNIQUE ideas? Neither company invented the idea of a "windowing" system. If neither company existed, someone would have come up with similar anyhow -- but only once the hardware was evolved enough on a low end computer to support the functionality.
Open Source is playing catch up. It got to the game once there were already big players. It's a mistake to underestimate it. Microsoft realizes this and that's probably why they and others have pushed for software patents. The only way to FOSS is a legal attack -- an attack based on features is a losing war.
I have very mixed feelings about this. On one hand, as someone afflicted with a neuromuscular disease, I have hope that science will offer some therapy within my life time. Yet, I think there are major hurdles which must be overcome which may elude us for longer than we expect. Let's not forget the old school physicists who thought that there were only 2 or 3 major questions left in physics. At the time I'm sure they thought they were on the cutting edge, yet they couldn't have been more wrong.
I'm also concerned that with current limitations on stem cell research, there may be unjustified delays in scientific advancement. I think we are more likely to see a scenario like the one portrayed in Gattica where genetic knowledge allows parents to use scientific services to select more desirable children. Remember the old saying: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Look at the world we live in -- the corporations have become the new ruling elite. That leaves government officials as court partisans and the lowly masses (us) as serfs in a corporately controlled society.
I think we also must take all these reports with a grain of salt for obvious reasons. I'm sure some people on slashdot are old enough to remember scientists claiming we'd have hover cars or even moon colonization by 2000. The fact is nobody can predict what the future holds with 100% certainty. We can make predictions based on trends, but true advancement often comes from serendipitous chains of events beyond our current ways of thinking.
Whatever you do, don't donate to the Red Cross. When 9/11 occurred they took donations intended to help victims of 9/11 and used it elsewhere. Your money is better allocated to other relief organizations if you want it to get where you intend for it to go... In my eyes, and many others, the Red Cross lost their credibility. They may do a lot of good, but I no longer trust them.
Food, water, and medicine are most important right now. Donate to a food drive in your community. Donate to an organization that will give food and water to the people who need it.
It has been widely reported that luxury items sold very well this year, compared to stores such as Walmart. I was amazed to see what a poor selection Walmart had this year, compared to the same time period last year. Not only that, but their prices were higher than I was willing to pay for Walmart goods.
Now let's compare that to Amazon.com. You can order something and have it delivered to your family by Amazon. That saves you from sitting in line at the post office. Even during the non-holiday time of year my local post office has constant 20-30 minute lines.
Personally I am an internet bargain hunter. I look for the best bang for the buck, from a store that my friends and I have previous experience with. I also look at the return policy and shipping costs. I've sent many gifts from Newegg, for example, and have never had a problem. From what I've been told by friends and coworkers in the past, they have very good RMA policies.
As several people have pointed out, 32 Gbits isn't a "lot". 32 GB / 8 = 4GB.
What I think many have failed to see is that they are talking about an 8 fold increase PER CHIP. Most devices will have many chips. So what their press release says in laymens terms is, "Take the largest flash drive currently available and multiple by 8."
Not only that but it will do it with less power. Unfortunately I don't think it's enough to make up for all the electron sucking video cards starting to hit the market right now.:(
I like that there are more extensions for Firefox, yet on my Linux system I've found that Mozilla is easier to install and upgrade than Firefox. With Mozilla I can go to a term and 'tar -xzvf mozilla..' and run an installer. With Firefox I have to untar/gzip and then upgrade a bunch of stuff before I can even get to the installation part. Call me lazy... insult my antiquated distro... or my lack of updated libraries... but Mozilla is just easier in my particular case.
Normally though, I'd say Firefox is better in terms of it's design. Mozilla is a suite of apps, so that alone makes it useful... to me though, Firefox is the "Google" of the web *browser* world: small, fast, and useful results.
Whether it could have or would have been legally purchased isn't the issue for them. The issue is they own the copyright on the shows and they have contractual agreements concerning how the movies should be distributed. Distribution of movies or software which aren't in the public domain is illegal in most countries. If it's not in your country, it likely will be very soon.
The rise of the corporation in this world and their subjugation of governments around the world is an issue worth debating; however, as it currently stands they hold all the leverage legally speaking.
How many government snafu's will be revealed by file sharing? Look at some of the things published on P2P networks already, concerning prisoner abuse by the U.S. military. Some of the information was originally made public by more traditional means, but many hot stories have broke because of pics or videos from Iraq on P2P networks.
Of course there is the flip side of beheading videos being published by terrorists or a meere "gore loving freak". I wonder how long until we hear about "those terrorist P2Pers". Don't think it can't happen...
CNET: "We did not perform any "official" accuracy and performance testing on the products."
This is 90% sugar and 10 % substance. Avoid the CNET twinkies or your brain will slow and possibly shrink.
The user's in a corporate need more personal responsibility. The technology is out there and whether or not people like it, they need to understand it to be competitive in the work place. HOWEVER, when they do come to an IT guy for help we need to do our best to help them. The problem is that the IT guys get treated like shit. Help desk probably get treated the worst. Desktop techs usually fare better because people are more respectful face to face.
I've worked help desk jobs for years. I've seen the bad techs and the good techs. I would say I'm great technically but I don't have a lot of patience to deal with pushy people and people who think they are more important than everybody else who is having a problem. In the US, at least, we go wwwwwwaaaaayyyyy too far trying to please everybody. It's a mistake that makes people feel entitled to having their way. We need to be like France and be rude SOB's.
And you know what? I don't want to deal with those types of issues ever again. At least now that I freelance, I'm getting paid well enough that I don't care if they are geniuses or complete idiots. My success is a reflection of their happiness... I will not forget that.
Let's not forget that socially maladjusted teenagers often grow up to have continuing social problems... I doubt many annoying geeks CAN change.
This article skirts around the real problem: stupid people.
And yes if they talk back to me I will be resetting their login password to a random string of my choosing.
As far as problems with Windows Update due to "bad keys", there is a program available that will correct this. I will not be posting a link to it for obvious reasons. I believe it's available via a torrent. I have one version called "winxp-keygenpack.rar" and another one called "xp sp1 keychanger sp2 keygen and product key viewer.rar". There are problem a dozen different file names you can find if you search a little.
Btw, I've tested it on many machines and have had no problems so far.
Probably by the same slanted polls released by people like this:

You see the movie's primary goal isn't in changing THOSE types of people. The goal is to solidify Democratic and Independent support behind Kerry as well as reaching as many of the 50% of non-voting Americans.
Click here to listen to MoveonPAC nationwide teleconference with Michael Moore.
You know a movie has substance when people who haven't seen it are attacking it. The thing that has the Republicans scared is how this movey HAS swayed the American public already. There is report after report of staunch Republicans coming out of the movie saying that they can't support Bush.
Bush had better pardon himself for war crimes before he leaves office -- otherwise he may get a knock on the door. Maybe not now or in the near future, but the people of the world will not forget what his administration has done.
As a few people have noted: this is only a TEMPORARY restrainging order.
After looking at PDF's of the clients claims they are basically saying that they used colocation service from this company. The business grew and has 15-20 people on staff. As the business grew, the defendent expressed interest in purchasing the company and hiring the owner. The owner didn't want this. The defendent went on to strong arm the client, charge fees above and beyond what their contract stipulated. They changed the agreement multiple times in an effort to cause trouble for the business owner.
The owner has built a data facility to host his 1500 (if I recall correctly) servers himself. He has tried to work out a deal where he leases a minimum amount of service from the colocation facility and retains all the IP addresses while all of his servers are moved. Due to the possibility of losing business if there is extended down time, he has tried REPEATEDLY to structure an equitable deal. He isn't trying to take the IP addresses. He is trying to make sure the IP addresses aren't taken away so that services can be redirected to the new facility. He is and has been willing to pay for all services, moving fees, bandwidth, electrical usage, storage space, and so on THE ENTIRE TIME.
Let me be clear about this: the client isn't trying to steal IP addresses. He has his own million+ dollar facility with addresses given to him by ARIN. He is simply trying to ensure a smooth transition which will not cause a loss of business -- something which he claims that the defendent has done the entire time.
People need to stop freaking out. Mucho thanks to the person who posted the actual affadavits so we can see what is being blown out of proportion.
As someone who has muscular dystrophy and has a mother who is severely disabled by the same disease, this makes me very hopeful. Although the article specifically warns that they don't know what the long term effects of this disease are I think you would find that most people suffering from muscular dystrophy would gladly take 30 years of a somewhat "normal" life compared to being doomed to watch my body waste away for lack of a viable treatment.
That said, I'm still very skeptical of this discovery. There are over 40 types of muscular dystrophy, not to be confused with multiple schlerosis, which may be affected to varying degrees by myostatin. One thing that the article didn't mention was that even with myostatin it's not possible to regrow muscle with our current technology. So what is already lost may be permanently lost, yet even a 25% improvement or even arrested development of the disease would be welcomed by many of us in the MD community.
I feel pretty bad for this kid. After all, he will never have a normal life. I've known a genius who burnt out and worked a crappy job. This is just what we need for a grid... an OS that will consume 10% of system resources just playing solitaire.
