That stuff is very important - for those first learning how to read. It's important to keep them interested, because learning to read can be very frustrating to some kids.

Well, there goes my argument, then. You found one rich, black man.

Notice that, while you made this overwhelmingly about race, the key word here is "rich". White male was just a generalization - and looking at the numbers, a pretty damn good one. But really, it's the money that matters. Not the race. It's just noteable, for a myriad of other sociological reasons, that the perpetrators are generally white and male. Generally this is because there aren't a lot of rich black men, or rich black women, or rich asian transvestites, or rich martian amoebas running things in the United States. We could expound on the reasons for this for hours, but I'm sure that's covered in Introduction to Sociology as well.

I believe my siblings have made my point for me. Just because SOME white, rich males are thieves of the highest caliber, it does not mean that ALL white, rich males are thieves. You made that assumption all by yourself. I don't think I need to say any more about that.

The bottom line is, white males make up the overwhelming majority of CEOs in the West. This is a fact. Furthermore, of all the recent fraud scandals concerning mass quantities of corporate money (Tyco, Adelphia, Enron, Global Crossing, etc, etc), how many of those indicted were not, in fact, rich, white males?

    I'll answer for you. Zero.

My mother was raped last year. My first instinct was to hunt this guy down and kill him very slowly, and very painfully. But I didn't. That would have just made things worse for my mother. In the end, it became clear to me that it was my own weakness that was making me want to do this. It was hard, considering the circumstances, but I was able to get over this base, inhumane desire for bloody vengeance.

I still think I did the right thing.

While I don't think the death penalty is ever the answer, I am okay with limb removal. Castration for repeat rapists, lose your arms for murder, etc, etc.

I'm sorry you made the assumption that I was even referring to warez (applications or games). I think these punks deserve what they get. There's a big difference between giving thousands of nameless, faceless strangers access to mass quantities of copyright protected works and ripping your own CDs to mp3, or, dare I say, having a few of your real friends check out one of those mp3s. Gasp! That's right. I shared an mp3 with two of my very best friends! HELLFIRE AND DAMNATION AWAIT!

Grandparent was obviously making a blanket statement that essentially said "if you ever make a copy of anything, for any reason, you're a pirate". Sorry, but I don't fucking buy it. Does it directly relate to this particular story? No. It does, however, relate indirectly, for as these software companies push on Congress to protect their "intellectual property", fears of DMCA-esque laws abound - only this time, with mandatory useage of DRM - all the way to the soundcard and the speaker. I'm sorry, but if I want to make a mix CD, or, more likely, an mp3 CD for my car stereo, then I'm going to. I don't think I'm being completely unreasonable here. But, according to grandparent's trite generalization, I am.

That argument makes no sense (the gas engine). Sure, we "invented the internet". We implemented it. It works. If you don't like it - hey, you know how we did it - make your own. Just like Germany allowed everyone else to do with gas engines.

Even IF I feel that argument to be ridiculous, it is going to be pretty sad that the rest of the world is pushed into that situation. However, considering the alternatives (like the UN running it, or China), I prefer how it is now. If you can setup a non-corrupt, laissez-faire, "we will unequivocally protect your right to free speech, even if it means allowing you to promote hate crimes or other unpopular and 'immoral' speech" international organization, then I would completely back it. Until then, however, you're not going to get my agreement (as if that really matters, but even so).
