I work for a large manufacturing company in the US. The facility I'm in has an interesting approach. First they format... Then they drop a 20 pound weight on it. Usually a few times. I'm sure if someone really wanted the data they could get it, but it's raises the bar a little.
I've been thinking about something like this for a while now. (Too bad, I'm just a DBA and not into robotics.)
How soon before we can jump from large heights? Say jumping from a 2 story building. Where the legs act as a shock absorber. Or what about jumping over large distances? Something similar to the Hulk.
Just for grins, I searched for the following on MSN:
free86
xfree
xfree8
They all pointed to an Xfree86 page. Kinda funny how just "XFree86" doesn't work. No wonder they want to own the search engine world. I'm not even anti-M$, but that's crap!
They tried this once before and it was a flop. Consider WinME (98 Reloaded). For the record, I'm not anti-MS, but WinME was awful. I worked on a few boxes for some friends and it was the biggest joke of an OS. I'm alight with 98 and XP, but IMHO a "stepping stone" OS is only going to hurt them... again.
For the most part, I'd have to agree with that assesment. (Not totally, there is some use, but mostly overrated.)
In the past, I've used Monster.com and ComputerJobs.com. And all of my calls have been from consulting companies. Which is really strange, since I always specify that I'm not interested in being a consultant.
Ultimately, you need to consider who these types of sites are for. Let's face it most of the really sweet companies don't use them. That's because they have ppl banging down their doors. They don't need Monster.
I can think of a lot of people I know who have their resumes and only one who has gotten a cool job.
As a gammer and a married man, I certainly understand your position. However, I HIGHLY recommend that you think this through before you mention it to your girlfriend. You might get yourself a slap...
Now with that said, if you are brave enough to go through with this idea I would go with some sort of RPG. It has the action as well as the social aspect. I'm a big NWN fan, though I'm not sure if you can use a headset/mic.
At first glance it doesn't seem to make sense, but think about it. They take a little time and effort to thwart your filter and they may increase distribution slightly. When your sending like a billions emails a day even a 1% increase is significant. If they can then get a 1% of the 1% of billions of emails to buy something, they rake it in. Sending the email doesn't cost them a dime and they have everything to gain.
This brings up an interesting philosophical point on the use of deal sites like FatWallet and such.
In the past (if you've followed the stories on/.) stores like Wal-Mart were particularly irritated by these types of sites. Specifically because they pulled back the proverbial curtain to soon. I mean let's face it some of this type of information is strategic sales and marketing information that merchants don't want let out early. For some strange reason, I vaguely remember discussion about a lawsuit... I could be wrong on that point, so don't quote me.
Which brings me to my point. Just like Google's indexing, it looks like some vendors are finding ways to "bend" the rules to their advantage. The benefit of sites like FatWallet is that they provide useful information to the shopper. Once that information becomes manipulated or suspect will the benefit of this type of deal site be marginalized? I think to some degree yes.
Are you doing this for the "fun" or do you think it would be something that you would eventually market?
If you think you will eventually market/sell it you need to becareful how you go about it. I know someone who came up with some original stuff and started to take it to "agents". (No No, not that Smith guy!) These are gaming agents who review your stuff. If they like it, they connect you with "industry". Anyway, he got totally shot down. To add insult to injury, some time later, he sees his stuff on the shelf in a store.
I think he might be heading to court, but I'm not sure. He tells me that if he does go to court, he will lose any chance of getting published. Taking one of the big boys to court gets you flagged. No one will touch you again.
The article states that they have been "studying" Linux, but it doesn't specifically say what aspect of it is being reviewed. My natural take on that statement is that MS Engineers are studying the Linux kernel. (Granted my assumption could be wrong.)
If that is what they are infact doing (studying the kernel), wouldn't their be legal ramifications? It's one thing for them so say, "Hey Linux has feature $X, we're going to add feature $X to Longhorn".
( $X = 'Some Cool Feature that Linux has that Windows doesn\'t, like Kernel Modules or something like that\.';)
-Sorry, Installing Oracle via Exceed over DSL. It's painfully slow and I'm bored.
It's something altogether different to be reading Kernel Source on one screen and coding on an other. Even if they aren't "copying". I'd think that SCO would be all over this. Oh my mistake they paid!
1) Starcraft - released in '97 (2097?), is a great multiplayer game that you can pickup for 10 bucks! Heck, I was playing just the other night.
2) Unreal Tournament (the original) is another sweet first person shooter that you can pick up fairly cheap. I love that game!
3) Unreal Tournament 2003 is like 19 bucks. Your PC is more than enough. You might have to back off some of the high end graphics depending on the graphics card.
Those are my cheap favs!
Good Luck!
I do not understand how these leeches are still in business. The only way that they can stay in business and want to stay in business is because they are making buckets of money! If everyone hates them the way they say they do, there would be no way they could turn a buck and would close shop tomorrow. Basic economics demands it.
I refuse to buy anything from telemarketers, spammers, and the like. I don't care if ther're giving away free gold, on principle I refuse to listen/read/whatever. I can't be the only one! Please tell me, I'm not the only one!
With that said, what I want to know is "WHO KEEPS BUYING THIS CRAP?!?!" They have to making money somehow? I don't know who ticks me off more the telemarketers or the people who keep buying this stuff.
Everybody and their brother complains about unsolicited calls right? Well, if everyone "hates" them, how do they stay in business? Soundly like we have some "closet" shoppers here.
BTW I live in Indiana and we have a state do not call list... IT ROCKS!!! I haven't recieved a call in like 2 years.

Two-edged sword.

Is my understanding correct?
Opps! You're right. It was late - I wasn't paying attention.
;)
I've heard of ppl running it under WINE, but have never do so myself, so it probably doesn't count. I guess he could dig up a copy of FREECRAFT.
