Other things keeping IT and devs down:

    1) being always right - creates envy
    2) not being afraid of showing they are right - creates discomfort within the management
    3) being unable to suck it up to the boss
    4) actually having fun with the job
    5) actually being competent. You know, when a person is promoted in a corporation, usually the criteria is:

    - "which is the incompetent one?"
    - "that guy."
    - "promote him."
    - "WHAT?"
    - "you heard me. he's the lazy guy. we can't afford to put on the management one of the ones that actually work, because that would mean less work would be done."
    - "oh... I see. HEY BILL! CONGRATULATIONS! YOU WERE PROMOTED! NO GO SIT IN YOUR FREAKING OFFICE AND LEAVE THE OTHER GUYS DO WHAT YOU CAN'T!"

I don't know if he works for Microsoft or not, but I do. In the Dynamics AX product.

AX, formerly known as Axapta, was bought a few years ago. The Dynamics line isn't meant for the same market as SAP, but to smaller companies markets. The products is still being reengineered. A lot of the code base is older than 10 years (therefore older than the Microsoft acquisition) and is pretty obfuscated. The developers here are great and pretty good at what they do, but we're talking about a > 1M lines codebase. And that not including the kernel, I'm just talking about the X++ code. The kernel is dealt with in Redmond or Fargo. There's no single developer here that knows the product top to bottom, as it is impossible because it is enormous.

It is true that Microsoft uses SAP in the core, this is a known public fact, but that's because none of the products in the Dynamics line was meant to serve an employee number as big as Microsoft's current. If it was, Microsoft would be using Dynamics. Microsoft is it's own biggest beta tester of all products.

And actually, Oracle is, in fact, supported.

Is having an autobiography a sign of modesty? Were he really "ridiculously modest" as you stated, he'd never find himself worthy of having an autobiography. A memories book for his family and stuff, yeah, sure... when he started getting really old... but an autobiography? He's a guy, who had an idea that turned out to be an incredible and long lasting project and that went well. He can be as arrogant and as modest as anybody else. As right and wrong.

well, but if you think of it, in the case of such markets, if the problem are the competitors, than having the documentation opened or closed will not make a difference... the competitors can simply reverse engineer the driver... it may take longer, but we're talking about multi bilion dollar industries here. They HAVE the resources for that...

I'm not a fan of opensource. Or closed source. I'm purely agnostic on that field. I believe licenses should be chosen on a per-case basis. But hardware makers loose little by opening their software accessible interface documentation. Actually they have more to win, because with open documentation, other people can write drivers for software platforms where that piece of hardware has so far been unsupported. That may actually increase their market share.

I have been more and more accostumed to always get more... for example, with cell phones... they come simple, then they add another feature, and if you actually start using that feature, you will not want a simpler one again... and this becomes recursive. It is, in fact kind of addictive.

If we think historically, most of today's citizens of urbanized and developed areas hardly would be able to go back and actually live in the conditions of our ancestors.

I, for one, have a hard time dealing with situations where I have no connectivity to internet. I can barely manage it if I have a laptop where I can at least do some work.

That's my point of view to addictiveness of technology. In a certain way, it is the addictiveness of the evolution we inflicted in ourselves.
