And to play those purchased songs on their ipods, they have to circumvent copyright protection, which is a crime. This has nothing to do with piracy or p2p.
I don't recall specific numbers, but the artist gets a number of points. Each point counts for something like sixteen cents. It usually ends up being around a dollar per album. And out of that, I believe they have to pay their agent, manager and often times pay for some or all expenses involved in videos and touring and maybe even production.
Um. Well, the obvious answer is to charge him with the criminal act of circumventing copyright protection in violation of the DMCA. I believe there would be both civil and criminal charges involved.
I don't see what other choice they have. You can't sue some kid for using a green marker on your CDs to break the protection, but not do the same with your own "employees" who are encouraging and educating people on how to perform a criminal act. Especially since the copyright no doubt belongs to the record label and not the band.
Of course, there's a massive waste of time, effort and money in the meantime. And who is to say that by the time this "space elevator" comes around and is usable to launch space vehicles, we won't have developed a more efficient, cheap, powerful fuel to launch shuttles?
It's like high power computing. Sometimes waiting is the best solution. You could start computing in 1980 with whatever power is available and it could take - what - 30 years for the computing to finish on that power? Or we could wait until 2005, toss a couple of cheap boxes together and achieve the same computing in a few months - coming out ahead of if we had just started in 1980. Saving time, power and money.
I don't think we'd ever use the elevator. At best, it'd just be a technology that comes and goes without being useful to anyone - except that in the process of creating and building it, we'd probably have acquired some useful degree of scientific discovery and experience that would help with future endeavors in other areas... The question is, will what we gain from it be worth the money invested in it?
I know I'm going to get modded down for this, but I still think the whole "space elevator" thing is the stupidest idea ever. I mean... it just sounds so retarded that - short of all the coverage it gets - you'd be hard pressed to believe it isn't a hoax. I mean, this is along the lines of "let's make a bridge from the US to Australia" kind of ridiculous.
Well, that it's done in Java with WebStart is pretty cool. Other than that (looking at the screenshots), I don't see anything revolutionary about it and it doesn't look like the configuration stuff is particularly easier (or in fact, even any different) than most other clients out there.
I won't use it. I don't have a use for it (I use mail.app anyway) - but it's certainly cool.
I've had more problems with FEDEX than UPS. I shipped my $5,000 1U Rackmount server from Portland to San Jose for $210 and it arrived for installation by 10:00AM the next morning.
On the other hand, I've had Fedex deliver things (typically anything larger than a shoebox is a bad idea) with terrible results. Like the time they delivered a $1,200 200lb portable air conditioner that was labeled as clearly having to be delivered up three flights of stairs and all they had was a scrawny teenage girl who couldn't even get the package out of the vehicle, much less up the curb and three flights of stairs.
UPS, on the other hand, delivered my 500lbs of steel (power-rack for olympic barbell lifting) - and arranged to have two people in the UPS truck who carried every package and all 500lbs of it up three flights of stairs and into my living room without so much as a scratch on any of the parts.
No kidding... Shouldn't it be more like... uh.. send the most qualified?... You know... as opposed to... "let's vote to see who deserves to go the most?"...
A. Not everyone is so much of an environmentalist that they worry about wasting a little bit of gas.
Good luck fitting in, in Oregon.
B. A courier would take longer. There is no faster way of getting something less than a few thousand miles than flying it yourself.
UPS. $210. 10:00AM next morning.
C. Train? This is the United States. You can't just hop on a train and go somewhere. I don't know about Oregon, but I am over a hundred miles from the nearest Amtrack terminal.
As a life time Oregonian, I have to say that it seems like most people in this (worst job market in the country) state have given up on making a living and having real jobs in exchange for starting "organizations" and free projects. Then again, what do you expect from a bunch of flannel-wearing, pot-smoking, heroin-junkie hippies?:P
Anyway, for those who don't get what the big deal is - this just shows more of the recent immigration of tech (especially open source) to Oregon in the last few years. Most notably of late, Linus himself.
No, you're certainly not going to nail down every IP reliably that is used by these organizations - but you can get the obvious and not-so-obvious ones none-the-less. After all, why do I want doubleclick or BayTSP any access to my machine via P2P (or even to be able to ping my machine, for that matter). There is absolutely no reason I would ever want anything to do in the slightest with either of those groups. That's just an example.
Considering how many hits I see from the listed IPs, it's clearly not for nothing, even if not perfect.
Let's see if we can explain this so your wittle pee brain can understand:
It's a parody. Satire.
The person or persons at Rockstar who created the parody made the "liberals" comment part of their gag, in such a way as to insinuate that liberals are wrongly accused of supporting violent games while conservatives bash them. This is clearly wrong since the ignorance and political-whoring of the subject is exceedingly bi-partisan.
In other words, the implication of the tone of the parody deserved comment.
PeerGaurdian isn't about spam email blocking. It's about blocking IPs that belong to MPAA/RIAA/DOJ/Government/BSA and other organizations that flood p2p networks, looking to gather information on you and send you a lawsuit.
Hah! Totally. That's how I ended up with my copy of Populous! It wasn't the thing I'm most proud of doing at the age of 11 or 12, but... wait - yes it is. But the important thing is, while I may have stolen it - I didn't pirate it!
Sorry Peter M.!
I've spent thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars on legitimate copies of games since then though.:)
If you're sick of hearing politicians kvetch about video games, make it worth their while to stand up for them by voting for them and supporting them.
Sorry. I tried to play that game once before and there were too many glitches and crashes with it. It clearly had not gone through a proper QA cycle and I am not going to bother trying that game again until a solid patch has been released.

I only looked at the first 15 pages worth of results, but NONE are inappropriate or pornographic or sexual whatsoever. Even with "safe search" turned off, six of the first ten results are about the intended, non sexual, subject.
Yes, but I'm not going to pay a portable based on ONE game.
Seriously, I don't care that the Nintendo fanboys modded me "flamebait". The fact of the matter is, the "dual screen" idea is nothing more than a gimmick. I have seen countless DS games and while they may display something on the second screen, they don't actually utilize it in an interesting or useful way. Hell, look at the most popular game out there right now - Nintendogs. What does it use the second screen for? From what I could tell, it just shows a clock and that's about it.
A bigger screen would be more useful than a dual screen - at least in the way that they're creating games for it right now. I think if you're going to get suckered into a DS, you should do it for the touch-sensitive games (which look dumb to me, but at least that's something different for once) rather than because it has two screens. Advanced Wars is the only game I've seen on DS that uses it in the way it should be used. It's like the developers of every other game didn't even KNOW there were going to be two screens.
I played my little brother's PS2 and the controller baffled the shit out of me. Too many buttons and levers and sticks and knobs. And the control itself was the size of a small fishing boat. I'm scared to death to see what the new controllers for all these systems will be like.
And that Z trigger thing on the N64... Holy shit... What the fuck was that...
