Even if the Opera dude was right, Firefox is free, open-source, extensible and has a bazillion amazing extensions. I'll take that over paying for Opera or using the free version that is stuffed with adware.

I agree that Opera is a decent browser and they've been decent for a long time. I just don't want to pay for a browser or be forced to view advertisements. And thanks to Firefox, I don't have to.

My only complaint is that Firefox seems to run painfully slow on OSX.

As a new Mac user, I think calling them "indie games" does a disservice to real independant game makers. Except for about a half dozen games made by Blizzard and ported to the Mac, every other game looks like it was made by a retarded ten year old kid and has the "gameplay" to match.

I'm a steward of my bank account. A copy of WoW is no different from one retailer to another and I'll buy it where I can get it the cheapest and with the least hassle. If this means I order online from Amazon rather than travel halfway across town to stick some money in some over-grown kid's hand, that's fine with me.

There simply isn't a need for smaller videogame retail stores, except for used or vintage items.

Do you shop at the family-owned korean convenience store down the street for your groceries, even though a can of chili is $3.75? Or do you travel further to go to a Safeway or Cub Foods where you can buy it for 80 cents?

Is capitalism and the concept of bulk buying purchase power new to the author? Wall-mart, Home Base, Home Depot, Office Max, Office Depot, SEARS, Hollywood Video, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Costco and countless other major businesses have been succeeding for years based on being able to drive costs down through bulk purchases and sales. I don't see what the big deal is.

Does the author somehow expect the videogame sales business to use fundamentals from a magical world from fantasy land where it's seperate from the health care, medication, car sales and food industries?

I'd rather download Microsoft Office for OSX. They've released it for free now on BitTorrent, apparently. At least, I see it available all the time there, so it must be. You have to really appreciate that kind of gesture from Microsoft. Not only do they innovate, but they share with the competitor's customers!

More importantly, no amount of money could be placed on the quality and reliability of a corporately-developed product like this. After all, would you rather drive a car built by Ford or a car built by some acne-riddled kid down the street?

I for one only want expensive corporate products in my environment. Otherwise I wouldn't have spent all that money on a Mac. I suppose a program like this does have its place, though. Maybe among all of those poor people who can't afford robust Microsoft or Apple systems and have to settle for the third-rate world of open-source software and Linux operating systems.

I'm also eagerly awaiting Avalanche, which Microsoft assures will be a revolutionary no offering that will make free programs like Bit Torrent seem childish. Just another example of how pay-for software will always rival cheap stuff made by poor people in their basement for use by other poor people who can't afford stuff like PowerBooks and iMacs and iPods and WindowsXP and bread and rent and tennis shoes.

  12. Re:Music Exec on Legal Music Downloads At 35%, Soon To Pass Piracy · · Score: 4, Interesting

I've been doing more "legal" music "buying" than normal, recently. I will never ever pay $17+ for CD. That's ridiculous. But I did have an account with Rhapsody for quite awhile before I switched to Mac (they don't have a Mac client). They're a great deal. High quality streaming library of over a million songs for as low as $8.33/mo. And for $15/mo, you can dumb as much of it and play it on your portable devices as you want (as opposed to having to play it with their Rhapsody player on your PC).

It takes a little effort to get over the mental hurdle of not actually owning the music you're paying for, but for the price of five or six CDs, I can access an entire world of music. And while they have some licensing issues preventing them from getting some albums/bands (no AC/DC for example), it's generally a pretty effective collection.

Aside from that, I've also been using mp3search. Yes, I know it might not technically be legit, but for 10 cents per song and about a dollar an album, I'll take it over iTunes any day. Plus, it's real MP3s rather than AAC or other DRM crap.

Some people say that people will never pay for music if they can get it for free. That's just not true. They're just not willing to pay $17 an album. Or perhaps even $10. After all, if I'm not getting physical media, liner notes, inserts, artwork, jewel cases and have to deal with DRM crap that makes using it on multiple machines and devices a potential headache, why do I want to spend almost as much as I pay for the real thing at a record shop? Give me a ton of selection, easy downloads, non-crippled content and very cheap downloads/fees and I'm with you. And so are a lot of people.

Once the big boys are out of the way (RIAA members), there will be no reason for such high prices. An artist gets a buck out of a CD sale today - if they're extremely lucky. That's probably before they pay their agents or anyone else, too. So if you take the traditional distributor out of the picture, the artist can sell their MP3s online through iTunes or some other service for $2 per album and still be making more than double what they made under the foot of the RIAA distributors. And there's no cost involved. And they won't have anyone to share that $2 with.

The only thing musicians will still need is a way to become popular. Today, it's possible to become big at just about anything through internet promotion alone. But even if you needed some sort of professional promotion, you could still engage someone for that and do traditional stumping for your band. At least you'll still have far fewer middle men to deal with in the end.

    Riiiight.

The RIAA charges $17 for a CD and you call it "over priced" and "evil". Drug companies fix pricing so that they're more expensive than hard core narcotics and they're an "industry that does a lot of good".

Funding research for you to exploit isn't "doing good". It's just a matter of "doing business".

Wow. I didn't realize I'd stumbled onto CoastToCoastAM.com - I thought this was slashdot! What's next - a Slashdot story on chemtrails and Mel's Hole? While I agree that your typical drug company is about as evil as it gets, I have to employ a serious dose of skepticism whenever the source of a story is a mix of Art Bell/George Noorey/CoastToCoastAM, an Environmentalist and a Kennedy.

Anyway, I don't see why this is a surprise. Even a layman could have guessed that autism is often (if not always) the result of environmental factors. And why are we surprised that drugs have unwanted effects? We know that commonly prescribed drugs for acne, depression, hyper-activity have side effects like suicidal tendencies.

See, we have to ban yellow and red dyes from M&Ms, but god forbid we make pharmaceutical companies get with the program on the dangerous substances they pump into people.

And I don't see how they can't be held liable if a link isn't found. After all, if a woman is a crackhead or drinks a lot, she can be held accountable for her child's defects (and negligence).
