I don't think the parent was making a point about the lawsuit being valid, but it seemed he was making a point about how it's not video games, children are naturally foolish and oblivious. Unlike adults, children have no sense of mortality and do things we would say, "Jesus that would hurt. Hell it'd probably kill me." Fortunately children are malliable at that point in their life so what WOULD kill us doesn't them.

Help given to someone who doesn't want it is not help at all.

You mean like an intervention for Alcohol abuse or drug addiction? I would say the government, and by government I mean it's citizens, in some cases has a strong argument for protecting its citizens in certain cases. Clearly it is not their job to meddle in every part of life protecting citizens from every harm that might arise, but it has an interest in protecting many. O many stupid things people chose to do because "Hay man that's my right" comes back to kick us ALL in the ass. Who pays for smokers who can't work because of emphysema, or the man who ends up in trauma care because he chose not to wear his seat belt?

I think people ahve the right to do as they wish without government involvement, unless that activity is going to affect the rest of us somehow. But this debate is about the government regulating the gaming industry, which is ludicrous, since no other forms of entertainment as equally violent are regulated by them. Besides, despite faulty studies saying otherwise, video game use has no detriment to others aside from yourself. (Partners of WoW players may say otherwise however)

Last time I checked the new unreal engine isn't out and isn't DUE out for another couple years. The Doom 3 engine is unquestionably the most powerful 3D gaming engine available today, and will probably remain for a couple years perhaps.

What I think the interviewer... and so many people are missing here is WHAT made id software ahead of the curve. It wasn't brilliant new gameplay styles, it was their ability to bring you the technology of the future today. Most of this is by and large due to one man at the helm, and I don't think he's lost his step. Like I said Doom 3 is probably the most powerful engine, whether you enjoyed the game or not is irrelevant.

I think a Larger concern is the hit science takes in the eyes of those who don't fully understand the scientific method. In schools and Goverment, science is readily under attack from all sides and news such as this provides cannon fodder for those shouting the loudest against science to say "See, science isn't fact, they just make it up". Most people don't understand that science is peer reviewed and can iron out wrong conclusions, instead they just hear that scientists fudge numbers and so they must not be right.

My other concern was the science bending to the will of funding or lobyists. I supposed it doesn't really help when scientific research must be funneled through an individual at the white house who was a lobbyist for the petroylum industry who's job is to remove links to things that might hurt business.

The point the Parent was trying to make is that these events Promote these ideals in yound men. It tells them that women are second class citizens, and it's OK for and normal for men to see them as nothing less than an outlet for their sexual desires. It supports the notion of man as the verile powerful figure who is always looking to assert his dominance. As long as scham programming like that of Spike TV exists, more and more young men will continue to regard this as the norm.
