    Courier (or similar) I can face, but whay is the point of splitting a line over several lines. Kinda like Outlook's treatment of plain text emails (they HAVE to be split somewhere 72 and 112 chars) which really pisses me off (plain text emails on tunderbird on Windows need no such breaks).

    It is interesting, but I suppose it is explained because this sort of tech has to be (physically) tested a couple+ years in advance (and 2 years is in the final test/construction phase already, initial planning was years before), so strapping the latest untested camera in to a planned and tested system would potentially introduce a weak point in the system. Yeah, pretty nifty, kinda shows the potential 'old' hardware has when used to its full potential.

    I'm not sure of the relative validity of these points... though I agree with the sentiment.

    1. This is a Cisco problem, a general problem is in the points below:
    2. I didn't know there were "16.7 million addresses per square metre of the earth's surface, including the oceans", interesting. The problem with the present system is the 'chunking' of IP addresses... large groups of IP numbers lay dormant, reserved for academic/government institutions, the portion of private addresses is being squeezed in places. The IPv4 problem is an allocation problem, but allocations are determined by committees, and as soon as disparate and opposed committees get going progress and action stop for years, yes it is annoying beaucracy, but a technical work-around may well be easier than fighting this pettyness.
    3. A few years ago the internet was here and it did its job while processing power of out-of-the-factory internet infrastructure was so much lower than it is today. Volumes are higher now, the dotcom boom of endless financing has gone (maybe?!) but I believe the internet with IPv6 and its higher volumes could be cheaper now than it was (I am happy to have my mind changed with hard data but not supposition and not opinion based on loose facts and assumed weightings). Lecacy equipment and software has to be replaced sometime, all that COBOL was re-written pre-2K pretty easily.
    4. See 3.

    There may be "16.7 million addresses per square metre of the earth's surface" but if this can provide a solution for the next few decades, and is easier to overcome than the present beaucracy in IPv4 allocation (which is huge and incredibly difficult to overcome IMHO) then it is worth it.

    Yes, it was a transition process, not a blank sheet of paper (though not a DOS6 -> DOS 6.2 either)

    I think Windows was a rewrite of Windows-For-Workgroups (a significant re-write of Win3.1 and the branching of a network capable corporate OS aka NT4.0 vs 95/98, until XP).

    But the transitive process is obvious, not least because Windows XP is identified as NT5.1, Win2K was NT5.0 and NT4.0 was, err, NT4.0.

    Exactly. A percentage point is an overous way of saying "part in one hundred". Therefore going from (for example) 10% of a market to 11% of a market is going from 10 parts in one hundred (10%) to 11 parts on hundred (11%), the difference being one part in one hundred, 1%. Mr John Chamberlain's point that going from 1% to 2% is a doubling in market share is completely correct, however the market (in his example) share has only increased 1%. 2% is 100% more than 1%, but it is a % of a %. The market share has increased 1%, or has doubled (doubled being a 100% difference of the %age in the first place).

    If you don't feel comfortable thinking about % and statistics and are more happy sith simply mathematical analysis, think of the 100% being like the second differential and the 1% like the first differential.

  19. Re:Sorry... Performance != Branding... on Should a '9200' Brand Mean a 9200 GPU? · · Score: 1

    That is why it is a 1700+ and not a 1700GHz. Because it does not run at 1700GHz they will not claim it does, they will claim it runs at a similar throughput on the GHz scaling of the previous line of processors. Now ATI/HP could have called this a 9200+ and defined what this meant, but they didn't, they said it was something different (not that it makes much difference short of cannibilising the system).

  20. Stats can't be /.'s major on 2003: Year of Apache · · Score: 2, Informative

    A decline in usage of X from 36% to 24% means the incidence of X in the population has declined 12%.

    "Since October 2002 market share has grown from 53% to 64%, a 20% gain". Well no. The incidence in the population has increased 11 percentage points (11%), even though the numbers are ~20% different the market share certainly hasn't changed 20%.

    Here is an example of basic comprehension of percentage: Assume we have a static population of 100. 53 use Apache and 47 use 'other'. One year later, if 64 use Apache (the population is still 100), the amount of Apache users has increased ~20%, but the amount of the population has increased using Apache is only 11 more, 11% more of the population use Apache. It is therefore correct to say "there are ~20% more Apache users" and it is incorrect to say "market share has grown ~20%" as it has grown 11%.

    Yours was a nice lighthearted comment, pity it needs such a detailed explanation for all of the down mods and incorrect replies you've got.
