My take? In short: the guilty factors are cultural and historical in nature, not biological. Perhaps African society doesn't fit the mold of Western-style government as well as others do, but it's hard to blame them for that. In fact, I suspect the main reason Westerners look at Africa with contempt and pity is that Westerners have a habit of compulsively judging other societies by their own, homegrown, metrics. Blood revenge is a horror to you or me, but perhaps not so to those who were raised in a culture that values it as tradition and honor. Many Africans, for their part, would denounce our society's consumer fetishism and perceived soullessness.

And you can trust me because I'm Japanese with a high IQ.

Ugh. Thank you for illustrating exactly why people find the open source software community so intolerably obnoxious. To a user with legitimate questions and needs, a snide and condescending "tutorial" that painstakingly explains a completely unintuitive process, as if to imply it's the user's fault for not jumping through hoops, is a huge turn-off.

I know it's open source dogma to always "blame the user", but it's still unbelievable that the administrators of gimp.org thought it appropriate to post this "tutorial."

Sorry, I was wrong about the contextual menus in Firefox--of their myriad flaws, thick borders aren't one. Still, there's something offputting about the fact that they're set in a different font from the rest of the system, have strange linespacing, and cast an oddly shallow drop shadow. Overall, the menus feel very un-Maclike, which is typical of the application as a whole.

Personally, I can't stand using Firefox unless I absolutely have to, for this reason as well as those I mentioned above.

Not only is Firefox slower than Safari, but it's also far, FAR uglier (in my opinion). Scrolling is jumpy, and things just don't look and feel right--one bizarre example is the preferences window, which for no good reason is a sheet on the frontmost window. Popup menus are slow and have thick borders, making it obvious they're not implemented through Aqua. Command-period doesn't stop loading a page. I could go on, but I'd rather not waste my time.

This is offtopic, but if you have the time, I'm hoping you can answer a nagging question I've had...

I live in Manhattan, and someone I know moved here earlier this year and got a 212 area code on her new cell phone. Apparently, there were a number of prefixes freed up recently for cell phone use. My question is, is there some way I can change my number to a 212 area code? I've called to ask before, but there haven't been any numbers free for the taking. Do I just have to wait?

Posting anonymously because I'm embarrassed to admit I care about my area code. 212 is cool.
