    the obvious elephant in the room that no one seems to mention - these chips are on;ly 32 bit. OS X seems to be now even more stuck on 32bit-stupids! i know osx was barely 64 bit depsite running on the 64bit G5 and the like but why does no one even mention the fact that the duo chip seems to be a [ albeit dual core ] 32 bit chip?

    am i just wrong? i see no reference ot the fact tat this chip is 64 bit? apple hype would have surely mentionedi t if it was and yet no one seems to call out the fact this company is going with a third rate chip that intel seemed to have marketed the hell out of.

    i know it uses very little energy for the performance but really, in this day an age of cutting edge benchmarks would not a dual core 64 bit chip be better? or is that in apples next round of obsolesence?

    ironically tats the situation skype sounds best on.

    to be honest i have had mixture of leased lines and broadband since 1998 in the uk and been using mgcp when it sounded worse than it odes now and using sip and asterisk since around 2002. i have never had anything better than a piii 700 whic is probably about the same as the above. but you tanaka are grossly over genrous if you believe that it is great call quality or more likely grossly misinformed enough to have zero frame of refernce to realise that whilst skype is innovative [p2p], in your face and bold [free IM-style computer-to-computer service rolled out as a freeware client] it is not great quality just perhaps better than yahoo voice and msn voice. it also at the end of the day closed source , and proprietary as well.

    kudos for having a linux client. but skype don't need cheerleaders, babes.

    1D with its encrypted RAW output that requires proprietary software and significantly less resolution than what he probably achieves with his delux analogue kit.
    plus he can buy a decent digital back for his hasselblad and great lenses which is capable of HDR imgage capture.

    everyone talks about magapixels but no one talks about making enough use of medium and top end lenses like the zeiss T range wit the sensor resoution we already have. or the dynamic range an exposure may have taken as with HDR.

    permisson and so on is technically right. but he didn't sell it to people on the subway and prevent others form getting the fre version surely?

    i think he should counter sue and at least get nyc transit to pay the bandwidth costs for all those downloads
    he gave them a service as an alternate distribution channel! ie more people have the map whilst the nyc transit peeps have not had to pay for all teh extra bandwidth

    i dont have phone line i use voip for everything sop what would the use of having an opportunity to buy their voip add-on to their service if they force you to but a POTS line from Ma Bell/BT?

    i had wild hair at the time and a beard.

    i was seeing my [white] girlfriend off at the train station when she realised she had lost her purse iwth ticket inside and would miss the last train back to her far off home after our weekend together.

    i went to the ticket office and tried to buy the ticket with mistakenly the only card i had maxed that day,
    as i had no cash on me the female teller kept the card. which perturbed me.

    i said i woudl call my bakc and demand to know why [calmly - which is probably what freaked them]

    minutes later i saw two officers about to walk seemingly pas tme . i made eye copntact and smiled "afternoon"

    they wnated to talk to me. another three came up behind me and before i know it i was flanked by 5 others.

    they surrouneded me and everybpdy was staring. i refiused to come ith them and they seprated my gf to corroborate my story and verify my ID
    they kept trying to con me into "confessing".

    "tell us now and it would save a whole bunch of trouble"
    "come to the station with us" etc

    imagine if i was a real crim!!
    i wouldt be fooled by shit like that!
    i hadnt comnmited any crime!

    i was well cagey as i had delat with police before and knew what to say and what my rights were, it also helped that the check they did on me came back clean.

    when i was in primary school it was the nmemonic chant "Soh! Cah! Toa!" that the egyptian devotional designers and builders of the pyramids used to help them rembere the trig they needed.

      they obviously had some good ones for gradian identotyies too when they build the stargates.

    i come from a quit-comp-sci-back-in-98-to-pursue Film. capital F.

    celluloid film is lovely and everything but i hated video and DV for along time but that thinking remains elitist and inaccessible!

    Dv gave the little guy a certain geurilla grain chic. but fidelity concerns esentially marginalised him with snobbishness and honestly too low quality. [consumers were getting better tvs, dvd players even in the usa]

    DV really gave a better work flow than traditional film in terms of costs and time and labour. and then efficiency and managed control of the colloboratioe workflow as oposed to analgue video.
    face it no kid couldve afforded betacam SP and its digital children!

    in a way george lucas as early adopter has helped the small guy, ironic as it sounds [although maybe not as he has helped destroy the blockbuster!]
      firstly by fostering industry acceptance driving development in tools and subsidising initial R&D by being the first market!
      Hd dv cameras and so on.

    the rate we are going the small guy will soon be king. that is what has the studios scared.
    although it doessn't seem to be happening quickly with music, the fact remains the internet is enhancing music distribution and enriching the so called mainstream.

    BiTTorrent+HD-DV+cheap computers to edit on.
    p2p makes distribution easy and lest costy
    the cheap HD kit makes it high enough fidelity for acceptance
    now we are talking the real reason for all the DRM.
    so the new distribution channels get locked down once again and closed off to the lone players like they used ot be.

    90% of what the man in the street produces of shoestring budgets may be shit.
    however in the new revolution.. we will get to make that choice.

    itsa new darwinism in media. the dinosaurs wil ldie and the small furry mammals will win.

    so basically go for it!

    me im back in comp sci

    cause i think video games will be more fun and
    have more opportunities to be artistic.

    new envelopes and all that!

    really though it sounds high the cost of entry still..

    but thats because cinelerra is no kids toy.

    as a film maker i agree that the available apps arent as available as one would wish.

    thats muscley studios flexing. showing the horrible vertical proprietary solution providors of old that they are sick and tired. im lookingh at you, you AVID assholes.

    you conventiently omit AVID from your list. final cut pro will never beat AVID - some of the expensive apps you mention in combination are adequate replacements with the massive amounts of financial muscle and high end in house bespoke IT support the studios wield.

    what you are doing? comparing apples to the causes of the franco-prussian wars.

    as a programmer and free software advocate i take exception to your whining about software because i get the feeling you should know better.

    actually, i avoid gmo foods because they are pushed by evil corporations and cynical governments due to tha massive amount of profit potential of IP capitalisation in patenting food genetics. ie bio-IP plundering of the ancient and new worlds and the massive sunk cost in gentic research and developing gentic manipulation techiniques also need to be recouped . as the bio-Ip speculators and prospectors are all private and publically traded companies which *must* seek profit after trillions of dollars of outlay over almost 38 years of constant fevered research.

    your george bush and monsanto say they want to eliminate starvation.
    because:
    a/ monsanto want to make money
    b/governments tend to do what their coprorate paymasters tell them to do.
    c/ as an enlightened modern middle class progressive with conscience[no bad thing...] you *want* to hear that the governemnt is doing *something* so you or me won't have to.
    d/ they need a cover story as we distrust science and what we may not understand. like frankenfoods.

    let's assume that there is enough food in the world to feed everyone at present. [this is to keep the scaling with population growth argument separate. it may have merit but it would complicate the issue. it is however in its strictest malthusian sense utterly iwthout merit!

    how much do we throw away/waste?
    how much are farmers paid to leave rot to keep prices high?
    how much are farmers paid not to produce literally not harvest or plant?
    any of the vast amount of food aid generously[not ironic. thanks uncle sam!] given by the usa to other countries is PAID for by the US govt to compensate the producers.

    yet today, people in the USA starve, let alone asia or africa!

    so how will expensive patented exclusive GMO crops help those people now in the present?

    or in the certain future when we need the gmo crops to scale production. ie the massively increased food would be more expensive as well as being gmo.

    hence, i distrust GMO. not cause of ignorance or outright denial of its benefits and sheer inevitability but cause its in the hands of the wrong people. and i protest it.

    i do not own a tv as its usally trash onit. i would own it for bbc stuff/news and channel4 news. but since i cannot afford the license fee and a tv i choose not to even watch that.

    although using the bbcnews website makes me feel slightly guilty.

    however once i get out of being a student i'll probably buy a tv and license.

    i admire the bbc . i hope their new client
    is a/ based around dirac

    justifies the exostence of standalone bbc player and therefore worth downloading as an extra piece of software.

    b/ is available for linux

    c/ maybe only restricted to license payers [ i hope not so that exercise of ethics is left up to the leecher] and again justifies the requirement for a stand-alone authenticated player

    d/ if any of those come true that foreign internet users get to use it without restriction
    a true world service.

    e/
    if a bit torrent or p2p is embraced for media delivery for recorded shows.

    f/ a p2p streaming protocol based around ogg/dirac is developed that ius supported by the player so that so live amateur broadcasts will be carried.

    too much to ask? maybe.

    worth asking from our public media and broadcasting body?

    kudos .. but i odnt have a mobile that even does polyphonic.. i would love to get a decent linux PDA that could do wi fi and gsm so i could hybrid voip and gsm as cost suits and also case mod it into one of those huge 80s satphone type things.
