I beg to differ. Idiot college students are making cases that let you drop eggs off 10 story buildings; you can't design a laptop case that absorbs impact shock?

I think this is exactly what the parent was talking about when he said:

A case will not stop the jarring impact after the fall, though it might keep the exterior spiffy...

Sure the egg shell is unbroken, but the inside is not exactly stable, so the yolk is banging around in there.

Most of the pieces that can be damaged are inside the laptop. Weakly connected pieces, the hard drive's read/write head, the precision laser for your DVD/CD ROM drive, the keys on the keyboard, the LCD screen, etc. are all INSIDE your laptop when it falls.

Oh, and idiot college students study something called physics. When you have time off throwing generalized comments, try looking up inertia. Huzzah for newtons first law.

At the risk of being Offtopic... I know it's fashionable to bash MS and their products, but this statement is simply silly. What you're referring to MS doing with the X-Box is called a "loss leader." They make the platform at a loss with the hopes of making up the dividends on the individual games. All the major consoles do the exact same thing as do manufacturers of printers (ever wonder why you can get a printer for 80 bucks, but the carts are 15-30 bucks each, not to mention paper?), and several other industries.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but what lexmark does is profitable to them, what microsoft is doing is still losing them money. They are using the xbox merely to get their foot in the proverbial console door, in preparation hopefully to become profitable with the xbox2.

Next time someone mentions microsoft and one of their products, they might not be just trying to blame the problems of the world on them, and the poster might actually be talking about something that pertains to the subject.

    Imagine that.

That never stopped the xbox. :) I guess I am comparing lawsuits to consoles, but in any case, the lawsuits is not where they are gaining most of their money, much like microsoft and the xbox. They can sustain these lawsuits/consoles because they have other ways to gain money.

Anyone know a good DSL router that runs Linux? We are getting broadband here soon (Woo-hooo!) and I'd love to get one that I could tweak!

i dont know what exactly you mean by "tweak", but many people seem to like linksys, i used to use one myself until i went to a homegrown solution.

The only problem I found with the linksys came after quite a bit of usage, and quite a bit of firmware upgrades, it was the model befsr41, and after a time, if you sent so many packets down the line/sec(i dont even have approx #), it would basically die for a couple minutes before it would come back up. SPI would also not allow for port forwarding. It was however the best router I have worked with before.

I have also helped a couple friends setup some ranging from netgear to dlink to belkin to microsoft. There are a couple quirks with each, like the netgear mr314. If you want to run a server behind that, it doesn't alias the external ip to the lan ports, so basically say you want to ping your external ip,...well you can't. :( you have to refer to it by its internal ip(which would be something to the effect of 192.168.0.1 for netgear).

The microsoft, dlink and belkin i didn't work with quite as much(as far as in depth tweaking), but i assume there are quirks with each of the systems. For the sake of not liking things to be broken as far as functionality, i would recommend a linksys. :)

    no, im sorry,
as far as the road analogy, i have to say that if it is a private road and you let someone use it for a time, and then decide not to, they cannot legally use it without permission.

A good friend of mine did just this. He has a private road that happens to be in a convenient place for a business not very far from him. The businessman didn't slow down for his children, so he chained it off. The guy was infuriated, and took him to court on it. The judge saw fit to rule in my friends favor because well, it was private property.

so in short, yes, if the server/road is theirs they have every right to say that only licsenced clients/fords can use them.
