When I was using NetBSD, I wanted to run console only (I liked the command line and felt no need to turn a free, Unix-like OSes into Windows) but I didn't care for the limited number of lines and columns that NetBSD provided in its VGA console. My solution was to run X without a window manager, setting everything up via.xinitrc and using a healthly amount of -geometry switches. And if I needed it, twm was a command away.
When I ran the directory access utility, LDAPv3, NetInfo, Rendezvous, SLP, and SMB where all turned on. My question is, do I need any of them running? I am on a stand alone computer on a DHCP enabled cable modem.
"The part about this story that gets to me is that the researcher didn't alert Microsoft before posting to a public mailing list."
There is no requirement to notify Microsoft, nor should there be. I want to know about this kind of stuff as soon as possible. In my opinion, it is not for Microsoft to determine when I know that my computer has a security problem.
Besides, this kind of thing should show if Microsoft's boasting about response time to security vulnerabilities is the truth or just plain old anti-open source FUD.
It's funny you mention DR-DOS, since Caldera bought it from Novell just so that they could sue Microsoft. Maybe we all should have had an inkling of what was to come when they bought Unix.
Why do I say that? Because this country is so frightened that we are willing to give away our freedoms for a little bit of safety. Oh well. If we can't win the war, at least we can victimize ourselves.
I don't agree with you. This will make patching and updating the system far easier than before and it will reduce disk space requirements, which should always be a goal no matter how big hard drives get. My only concern would be in regards to a performnace hit.
I have to say, it never even occurred to me that squashing competitor information might be a motive for Microsoft's attempted buy but it really does make sense. If Microsoft could gain control of the most popular search engine on the Internet, they could make it harder to research information of alternate operating systems, Windows security hacks or problems, or even webpages that are critical of Windows and MS.
Of course, if they had purchased Google, I would have promptly stopped using it.
I have a daughter and I have decided that she will not have her own computer until the age of 13 or 14. Even then, I will be keeping a close eye on what she does with it.
It is not a trust issue to me but a safety/legal issue. First, there are adults out there trying to entice children and teens to meet them. Second, she could end up doing something that breaks the law (such as copyright infringement via file sharing or cracking) and since it would be happening under my roof, I am responsible to know what is going on.
I know some of you might think that this is harsh or overbearing but you also need to remember one thing: I don't owe my daughter a computer or internet access. It is a privilege, not a right.
Actually, I'm surprised that in the Star Wars films that Jedi, in general, are not hated or at least disliked due to their elevated, god-like status. The Jedi in films one and two also display a certain amount of arrogance.
Sometimes, watching the computer industry is like watching a bunch of lemmings. Next thing you know, SCO will be launching a music service as well! :)
It is from the Hegre-Archives, where I used to have a subscription.
Well, how about no window manager?

You can see an example of what I did here.
He mentioned Dock icons being the size of buses. That is probably why he though he was talking about Mac OS X.

What does Google and Linux have in common? The hatred of Microsoft. Maybe there is something to the conspiracy theories after all.

"Is there anyone SCO hasn't pissed off yet?"
Bill Gates?
but it won't shut up SCO. There is money to be made and FUD to be spread.

And yes, you do sound like a troll.

They'd probably have purchases SCO.
That's what I want to know. It would seem that this software is violating the patent.
I knew that I had read about this somewhere!!
This sounds interesting but I can't see running Windows just to play it. As for the game, this is a milestone. Other interesting milestones should be:
First full jedi
First full Sith
First combat between a Jedi and Sith
Actually, I'm surprised that in the Star Wars films that Jedi, in general, are not hated or at least disliked due to their elevated, god-like status. The Jedi in films one and two also display a certain amount of arrogance.
There are so many developers involved in this that it would probably be easier to file a copyright class action suit.
That sounds cool. I was wondering if you were using it to train a Bayesian spam filter.
Wow, that's a lot of notice. Maybe they just wanted to announce something since everyone else was.
And you're an asshole for name-calling but I'll concede that you're right and I was wrong.
But if you are so inclined, I would enjoy hearing about how you are using your Spam Honeypot.
This is a 10.3 only problem and the writeup on this topic needs to be fixed. Jesus, look at the people who came out looking for an excuse to bash.
Somebody mod him up!
