    if it's pure theory it shouldn't be patented in the first place.

    unless you can say "look this litte experiment shows it works" you should be told to go away.

    you can't just say "I think this'll work, if anyone actually invests in trying it gimme gimme gimme all teh royalties!!!1".

    once again: if your proof is just theoretical then it should not be patentable. what you're describing is a nightmare situation: what if Einstein had patented "a system and method of performing tasks utilising discrete electromagnetic wave packets" after he prooved the existence of photons?

    I advise you to turn off automatic MMS download if you have not already done so.

    Orange sends crap to your phone such as trailers for Catwoman.

    The "do not download if bigger than x kb" defaults to 100k but Orange will send 99.9Kb files to bypass this.

    Once again the best thing is to deactivate automatic downloads of messages.

    the problem being despite obviousness the owner of the patent can claim "you saw it here first", whereas the individual often has nothing to prove they came up with the idea naturally.

    assuming software patents are enforced it seems "reasonable" (c.f. DMCA "effective security") that you can stop a company selling a product violating a patent. but can you possibly stop individuals writing their own code?

    so AFAIK software patents have the possibility of stopping the business end of linux, but can't fundamentally be a threat to its existence?

    since when has public view been important to linux?

    and linux was doing just fine before IBM et al. hint: they came to linux because they saw great potential, no one cold-called IBM and made a sales pitch.

    fundamentally linux is about talented people writing software based on principles. to kill linux you pay everyone money to stop, kill everyone involved with it, or pass a law abolishing rights such as free speech.

    doesn't the file name WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe suggest this is NOT final? I'm not so familiar with MS naming but this sounds more like a "hotfix" than a final SP e.g. the simpler name O2kSp3.exe for Office 2000.

    well yes it can be split e.g. odd numbered lines and even numbered lines.

    depending on the scene it won't always be a perfect split of the workload, but it should be pretty damn close.

    and today science is still a major source of philosophical debate, both directly e.g. consequences of quantum mechanics, cosmology... and indirectly e.g. cloning.

    the very meaning of Ph.D. is quite a big hint too.

    but I still consider myself a scientist because I think an important thing is that no matter how good your logic is and how nice your explanations are, it doesn't mean a thing if it's inconsistent with ***observations***.

    mathematics is the subject for people who have great logic but don't concern themselves with it actually having any relevence to our own universe.

    modern "pure philosophers" are people who don't care about their logic being relevent to this universe or any other! ;-)

    no, driving slow is almost never dangerous. if you can't see slower drivers and slow down or change lanes safely and with plenty of time, always maintaining a safe distance between all cars, then YOU are the dangerous one.

    I remind you that (in the UK at least), the driver in front should be able to slam his brakes on without it having any serious effect on your driving. if it does have a serious effect then you are not paying enough attention or giving enough room. if you drive into the back of another care you are always 100% to blame here.

    maybe the insightful part is where I hinted at linux, being open source, forkable and being developed for its own sake rather than profit, inspires trust in its users and optimism about the future.

    whereas MS's new releases mostly serve just to extract more money and force non-uninstallable software on users which would otherwise never be touched.

    sure this is all just my opinion. maybe other people don't feel content using something that didn't cost hundreds of $currency. but if you take away opinions there isn't much left in life.
