IANAL, but executives can be held accountable, e.g. corporate manslaughter where AFAIK bosses can be held personally accountable for unsafe working conditions.

    google'd:
    http://www.mhcinternational.com/corpo rate_manslaug hter.htm

    CORPORATE MANSLAUGHTER

There is nothing new in the notion that industry and commerce have had hands in the deaths of customers, employees and their neighbours. Regardless of whether the reasons were driven by negligence or by incompetence, the net effect was that next to never were companies or their top managers held accountable by the courts.

Changes may well be on the way. The UK Government (May 2000) is now in consultation about the size and shape of corporate manslaughter or corporate killing charges. Prospectively unlimited fines are in view. There may be prison sentences for culpable directors. And the field of vision will cover all enterprises, to include public sector organizations, rather than the private sector only.

Enactment of legislation will take many months. The implications are clear even now. In addition to the moral responsibility which ought always to have been present, there are legal, cost and reputation reasons why managers should take action.

'Turnbull' requirements are already focussing attention on internal controls within the organization. Social audit and social reporting skills are increasingly needed by top managers. Above all, organizations will do well to look again at their values and their codes of conduct, whilst making sure that the needed educational processes are in place and working.

I mostly use MS for games. I use office because it's simple and because windows is my primary OS.

another thing keeping me on windows is I've never found a music program I like anywhere near as much as musicmatch jukebox. the linux version is just WINE-bundled and isn't fantastic.

plus I don't know how to run DVDs in linux. and since DVD software requires a special license I assume it isn't easy and free.

my graphics card (Radeon 9500 pro) doesn't have hardware support in linux. and KDE feels sluggish in general.

when I use linux (SuSE 8.2), there's something wrong with the internet connection sharing. every time I want to view a website or open any other internet connection there's a couple of seconds delay between giving the command and the programs actually starting to respond.

so even ignoring games which I'm not too bothered about, linux (and I've tried many versions/distros) is not yet suitable as my primary OS.

the best thing about open source software atm for me is stuff I can use in windows, such as Firebird and Thunderbird which have completely replaced MS software, except for home banking which demands IE.

so quit your ranting and open your eyes. I cannot "DO ALL OF THIS WITHOUT THEIR SOFTWARE".

"Don't use it if you can't buy it" - does this include open source, freeware? sounds like a phrase an anti-GPL zealot might use.

the only thing I don't pay for is a second copy of MS software (windows/office). but didn't they make their prices so high in the first place to account for this which is why XP is such a rip-off by disallowing it?

my computers are on for days at a time, constantly running seti@home, firewall, p2p software etc. in addition to any other software I might run. I don't understand all this WinME bashing. I've used it for years and it's worked well. no major problems. previous to ME I was running 98se. when I switched to ME my startup time went from a couple of minutes to 40-something seconds so I was instantly pleased and since then there hasn't been anything to worry about, which is how an OS should work imo.

for some reason people act like ME is a million times worse than 98/95 and it's just pathetic. I'm sure most of you only do it because everyone else does.

I always try out new linux distros and currently have SuSE 8.2. but none have been sufficently good to make me give up ME altogether. and if you want to bitch about bugs, I see far far more in linux than WinME.

I hate many aspects of MS and don't like defending them, but in this case I'd rather side with them than a group of ignorant self-righteous arrogant pricks. this isn't aimed specifically at the parent author, but those who have attitudes like WinME being particularly evil are just as bad as those who think the same about linux.

  17. since it's a "film book"... on Doug Chiang's Robota · · Score: 5, Interesting

Is Robota a film or a book or what? What exactly is a "film book"?

A "film book" is simply an art book story told in a film-like manner. Books allow the viewer to delve into the thoughts and motives of the main characters in ways film canOt. And films present drama in a linear time specific format that allows for a very controlled storytelling. I want to combine these two mediums, plus a third, the internet, to produce something different.

Eventually, this web site will compliment the book and any other mediums that are developed for Robota. Each will be used to tell a different part of the Robota world. For example, the web site will tell more of the backstory and character development using animation, text, etc. while the book will be the actual story of conflicts and how they are resolved.

This is one of the great things about telling the story in a variety of mediums. I can take advantage of the unique strengths of each medium to build a compelling world that couldn't otherwise be built in one medium.
