  1. Re:Define "Winning" on Discuss the US Presidential Election & the War · · Score: 1

If I had a stab at it, it means the region is under our sphere of control (control means political as well as economic).
This is not (if you need to be told) about peoples good, as I seem to remember Colin Powell (the Bush administration) were for moderate (i'll allow you to define moderate) Taliban in Afghanistan initially, as apposed to the war lords (the northern alliance). The people are the Bombed from the air, if there are any casualties we mean good, dammit. If innocent Women and Children are harmed the justification is usually, we were after a terrorist (again I leave it to you to define terrorist). What we have to under stand is if we kill some kids family who will look after him/her, the war lords or our army. The Taliban will most likely take up the role as foster home, so strengthening them. Before you ask me what side I am on what side are you on, is it with the innocent in Afghanistan/Iraq and else where.
We have to question our self sometimes, I remember When Iraq was being sanctioned (during the 90's) and hearing the problems this was causing the people there, my initial reaction was so what. Children where dieing because of a lack of medicine and supplies getting through. Would we do this in Northern Ireland, if not, why in Afghanistan/Iraq. Are we that Conditioned by propaganda that we don't care about others suffering, that the suffering of one group is more or less dependent on there skin colour, and whether we have had hostility to them in the past.

One thing that I have noticed is that the original article, written by Richard Gabriel, outlining c/unix (worse) over lisp (better) has been totally ignored. Richard Gabriel was suggesting c/unix had got some things right and conceded

It is important to remember that the initial virus has to be basically good.

    he also said

However, I believe that worse-is-better, even in its strawman form, has better survival characteristics than the-right-thing, and that the New Jersey approach when used for software is a better approach than the MIT approach.

MIT approach being another name for better/lisp model of development.
    This leads him to say

I think there will be a next Lisp. This Lisp must be carefully designed, using the principles for success we saw in worse-is-better.

I intend (at some point) to learn lisp so this is not an attack on this language, as I believe learning it will make me a better programmer. As for the Alex Payne I choose the great programmers who have worked on TCP/IP etc over the past 40 years, than him.

ps. please note that this is just the communicational style of spin, spin is a uthamism for PR (Public relations). Public relations was a term coined by Bernard Hays, and was a rebranding of the word propaganda. It involves manipulative techniques aimed at misleading the general public. A fictitious example would be Tony Blair announcing a new initiative. This initiative was also announced a number of years ago, along with other initiatives. As no one is keeping a track of his ideas its seems he is full of ideas and busily working on many important objectives.
This is a fictitious example but I am sure Ian Duncan Smith (Conservative ex leader) caught Tony Blair doing this in the house of parliament during prime minister question time.

Having had Tony Blair as our prime minister for 10 years I feel that I am now an authority on spin. It is essentially another word for BULL SHIT. It involves an individual talking without semantically meaning anything*. Specially chosen words are used that have resonance with individuals, thus allowing the listener to feel they empathize with the speaker.
