When I bought a 9800 Pro I had to do three kernel recompiles to get the damn drivers to work properly, I had to edit part of their interface code because they didn't handle the KT600 chipset I have on my board and even when I got them installed it screwed up my vttys when X was working and they drivers were so bad that several 3D programs actually ran slower than with the Ti4600 I have now put back in here (and installing the drivers for that involved one command...)

But wouldn't you be using as much, perhaps more, energy overall to get something into orbit that way? Instead of just expending energy getting a rocket and its fuel into orbit, you're putting a plane and its fuel AND a rocket with fuel (even if it is less) into high altitude flight and then firing up the rocket. The energy to move the extra mass of the plane and its fuel has to be taken into account.
However, given the mauling Ion Storm have received over IW (and the one I'm thoroughly expecting them to get over Thief 3) because of its rampant and painful consolisation, I'm hoping companies may think a little harder about the whole process.
(and before the console fanboys start - yes, I know about games that have been developed for both PC and console that have been a sucess. That's because they were done well with attention being paid to both and the advantages of each platform used correctly. Unfortunately it's a lot easier for software houses to do it badly).
So if they are so fun, why not reimplement them in a language that doesn't have the memory, cpu load and other problems of Java (ie: write it in c or c++) and then either use less power or have the cpu cycles spare for running other things in the background?
I've never, ever managed to understand the whole "it doesn't matter if the language we are using is bloated, hungry and generally shit - the hardware can handle it" mentality. Faster hardware should allow you to do new things the old hardware couldn't support and do the old things faster. Not reimplement old things with marginal, at best, improvements while relying on the hardware to compensate for bad language selection.

There is no amazing luck here, there is no God involved. And, to borrow a warning from the finance industry: past performance should not be used as an indicator of future gains. And, quite frankly, the world is a hell of a lot more dangerous and unstable now than it ever was during the cold war.
