    1. Are all the calls getting answered?
    2. How long is each call and how can we shorten that time-- without doing such a poor job that call volume increases?

I have a friend who works for T-mobile doing customer support like that. That is exactly what she needs to keep in mind with every single call. If in any day she has x amount of calls lasting over x amount of minutes, she gets some sort of stupid warning.

She really likes her job, but that's one of the things she bitches about a lot. Some customers are just irate and call because they want to verbally harass someone. Some customers have complex issues and take longer than the set amount of time.

It's that type of mentality that causes bad customer service support. Forbid that a rep actually tries to help you with your problems to the best of their abilities.

You bring up an interesting point. A lot of companies worry so much about their image that will go on PR campaigns and other stupid bullshit that probably costs them more money in the long run, and is considerably harder.

I could be wrong here, but wouldn't the easiest and most cost effective way of improving your image to be doing what you had described? Service improvements. Better pricing structures. Better policies.

I've never understood the corporate mentality like that. Is it really better for the companies bottom line to do PR stunts instead of making their service better?

So you want to know Gigabyte? Well, their support takes a few days to get back to you if you have problems.

First board, no problems yet and three years running strong.

The first board I bought from them, the onboard audio died after two years. Not a big deal. I could still RMA the board, but in the end, just buying a cheap audio card is cheaper for my time. It took them a few days to get back to me after I detailed what I had found and what my assumptions were. They just agreed with me that it did sound like I did nothing wrong and the audio died.

Third board, more recent, bought back in January. After I had put this new build together, it wouldn't boot. It would just beep at me for a while. After five minutes of dicking around with it, scratching my head, going "wtf", and other voodoo non-sense that I do with electronics to get it to work when I'm confused, it worked. It reported that my BIOS was corrupted and it had to reflash it with the back up copy it had stored. To top things off, I can't OC anything without the motherboard having a shit-fit and going through that whole, "I don't want to boot but I'll will beep at you a bajillion times, jerk" crap. After about a week worth of waiting for a reply from Gigabyte, they try to tell me it's due to the hardware that I have. Blah blah blah FSB, speed, blah blah blah. I try to point out that I can't even try to marginally play with any of the OC'ing settings without it crapping it, and that the FSB issue can't be the reason if the speeds can't even be remotely set close to cause that problem. The BIOS also has issues with beeping at overheating at any temp over 60, even if you set the warning beep to be higher.

tl;dr - First board still good. Second board, mostly good. Third board, could be better.

It's pretty obvious isn't it? Not even looking at it from an end user standpoint, it seems fucking retarded. Why is the community spreading out their efforts in so many different ways if the community at large cares about mass adoption? Where Linux is at now should have probably been there five years ago (it's only recently that the OS is now considered "user friendly" to some extent). It seems highly more efficient to have more people working on a few different things than a lot of people working on a lot of different things. Even TFA points this out.

From the end user standpoint, even if they do know about Linux in any capacity they might think, "Why do I have this version? What is this other version?" There going to look at what differs between them, see the jargon, and be completely lost. That may not stop them from "upgrading" anyway and be confused as to why things don't work.

Also, the diversification is a big hindrance to fixing bugs and other glaring issues. Issue X could have been fixed faster if there was a bigger team taking the time to do the work.

Or there may be less bugs around if there was a bigger team for testing purposes alone.

Naturally this is assuming that there was a good project leader and that the community actually had an interest in doing what they keep preaching about.

Good job at missing the point. How is the average person supposed to know that Distrowatch.com even exists? Furthermore, why should they take the time to find one that works? The average person doesn't want to go to leaps and bounds to find one distro that is the most user friendly. If you really support that ideology, Microsoft will continue to dominate, Apple will gain market shares, and people will ignore Linux or view it as that "hard to use OS".

Now, if that's what you really want. Fine. I just don't want to see you ever complain about how Linux has no market share. Unless you enjoy being a god damn hypocrite.

Even though some distro's have gone leaps and bounds in being easier to use for the average person, there's still that stigma of a.)people still think it's hard to use (because some distros, even for someone who has had decent experience with Linux in the past), and b.) it's not windows, so why should I get it?

Look, you guys want Linux to be taken seriously and have a significant market share over what it has right now? Cut the bullshit. There's no reason why there has to be a bajillion flavors. I suspect a lot of PC gamers are in the same boat as I am. Console games are just too easy today. Their only limitation are the crappy control schemes which is what adds any sort of challenge. I shouldn't have to be challenged by the control scheme. The game itself should be the challenged.

As some point in console history there was a big shift from games being difficult to beat, to games being easier to beat. It probably happened at the time where games started going the 3D route.

PC games, to some extent, have the same problem, but at least I don't have to be annoyed some crappy analog sticks. Those very same crappy analog sticks used to never bother me until I started PC gaming more.
