I've helped beta test for them (they have public beta testing). It does what it says it does. You can go to their forums and ask people about it all. Is it a hoax? It certainly could end up being one, but so could all of the other p2p programs out there.

I don't help in the beta testing anymore though. A few of the developers who are regulars on the board acted moronic any time I submitted a bug to them. I had to tell them what my problem was quite a few times before they finally understood what I was talking about. I'd show my bug report to friends who hadn't used the program before and they perfectly understood what problem I was having.

I really don't like using the program either. For me, it's a memory hog (uses 16 MB), and I don't have the money to upgrade from 128 MB. Plus, it looks really bulky. Though, if I want a more secure p2p app, I know where to look.

  3. Re:Not that it needs to be said, but on RIAA/MPAA vs. xMule Author, EarthStation 5 · · Score: 1

I have as of yet to see any factual reports put out by a non media / RIAA sponsored company that shows that there is an actual decline in sales, and that piracy is the biggest reason. While I can imagine that it is a problem, by itself it is only an insignificant problem.

Yeah, some of the shit bands sell out, but guess what? People still buy their music and they still sell a lot. So what if they sold 4 million CD's, which is 2 million down from the last album? I wouldn't call that a failure. Perhaps a large portion of the fans just didn't like their latest stuff. It's possible. It's also possible that some people are waiting for the price to go down.

Besides, from those kind of reports, it seems like they look at a limited time period to see how much was sold, and then make a decision based on that. Just because the first couple week sales are down lower than expected doesn't mean much in the way of 'piracy'.

With older bands who put out newer and shittier music, their concerts are still gonna sell like hot cakes! Why? It's because people enjoy attending the live performance and seeing the band play some of their favorite songs. I'm sure people are willing to deal with hearing a few crappy songs here and there for that sole experience.

So how is this cheaper? Wouldn't a bigger power supply use up the same amount as the smaller one? I just can't figure out how it would be cheaper than any other power supply.

Here we have an organization repeatedly talking about protecting artists, etc... all the while they screw them over and over again.

On top of that, they're always itching to have draconian standards as laws so they can get EVEN MORE power!

And if that isn't enough, the majority of their claims about piracy are completel lies! They've lied to the government many times about this whole situation and it's not doing jack shit about it.

While some people may be pirating for no good reason, I'm willing to bet the majority have a valid reason for breaking the law.

There's some songs that are very old that you can't buy in stores anymore, or anywhere else for that matter. How do you propose people get them?

Or what if you bought a CD and sometime down the line it doesn't work anymore? How you are supposed to recover that if you didn't back it up first? I've lost many CD's long before burners came out.

Or hey, maybe the person is doing this stuff in protest to the RIAA's actions. IMHO, breaking the law is prefectly a viable option as a form of protest when it comes down to protecting your rights.

This will describe A LOT of the p2p users.

You see this too commonly anymore in stories that deal with copyright infringement. You can only consider it stealing if you haven't paid for yet it... but then you're only stealing money from the copyright holders pocket.

And maybe, just maybe there wouldn't be all of this "theft" going on if copyright lengths weren't so fucking long! Granted that's not the reason everyone does it, but I'm positive it's one of the reasons some people do it.

Jail one person for p2p and there will be an even bigger backlash than what there is right now. I guarantee it.

I'm also sick of this idea that you can steal an idea, or legally own an idea. It's impossible. Once you have an idea and let it out, anyone and everyone can and probably will consume it in some form or another. The only thing you can do with an idea is legally own the right to profit from it.
