no justifiably-priced means to simply replace the screen
If you're in no rush, scan eBay for "parts" laptops. Once in a while, you can find your model with a broken motherboard/case/hard-drive/etc. If all you're after is the LCD, it's a good place to try. Most laptop manufacturers have repair manuals buried somewhere on their sites.
Of course, having said that, the screen is usually the thing that's broken in 90% of eBay auctions...
"open source software may currently be less secure than its commercial counterparts"
Seems like crap logic to me. I don't see how he can argue that OSS is less secure than proprietary software given his premises. If his main argument is "even with more eyes focused on the problems, they may not find the security flaws because they're not looking for or trained to find them", then shouldn't his argument be something more like "OSS can be just as insecure", rather than "OSS is less secure"?
...the RIAA, MPAA, Nintendo, your mom, and the King of Spain don't give a fuck about you making a copy of a CD to put in your car. What they DO care about is you copying that CD and distributing it wholesale to anyone and everyone.
I'm more inclined to believe that they're not quite as interested in you giving out burned CDs, but rather, they're more interested in making you pay for multiple formats. If you can copy songs off of your legally purchased CDs, then there's no incentive for you to pay the RIAA royalties on that 99 cent MP3 version you downloaded from $MUSIC_SERVICE.
I'm a huge fan of PragProg. Oh Yes, we Rushed though development of our last application. Only once did we lose Focus, but you Can easily avoid these issues. Since its Genesis, we've got nearly a Marillion hits a day. I can't wait Tull I pick up this book.
/.rs get really mad because they don't think Microsoft should be allowed to own it's ideas
The general/. consensus has always been that a software company can copyright its code, but should not be allowed to "patent" an idea. In other words, Microsoft should be free to claim ownership of their DoCrazyStuff() function, but should not be granted exclusive rights of "providing an method on a computer by which crazy stuff may be facilitated".
Christ, don't you people even read the damn blurb?
Your ID# is 15591. You should know the answer to that by now.
The jokes just write themselves. :)

It's been a complaint for a long time now, yet still no change.
...which is sad, considering that A List Apart has had a solution posted for nearly a year now.
Or maybe it was tried to no avail. Beats me.
I think SCO's already got that one covered.
Fuck the size! Fuck the memory footprint! Who cares?
Still, you're free to download your favourite 8GB text editor if you please. Kind of a waste, if you ask me.

(or 'PragProg' as it is usually referred to)

I suppose it all depends on how much investigation ISPs are required and/or willing to do.
gives them the mandate to shut down websites promoted through spam
So in theory:
Here's the future of advertising, inside our FPS games there will be billboards which have a simple web browser built in.
So when the game calls home and reports that it's been pirated, it redirects all of the billboards to goatse? Oh, the humanity!
Marketers can have the sides, top and bottom of a page to peddle products and services, but the body must remain pure.
You can have your body...

Hmmm, that *does* look familiar.
How much longer must we be hammered with the cliche, "get out from under that rock?"
Indeed. One should avoid cliches like the plague.
Apparently the Prince of Darkness propogates just like radio.
And lo, ClearChannel was born amidst the piles of burning brimstone.
It happens. There was some recent trouble with a phone number in Bruce Almighty, for example.
no one's going to go to "katie.com"
And yet there's a reason why every phone number in the movies has to be prefixed with 555.
Or they could assume that the associated website would contain more information about the book, author, etc.
without ever googling for the domain name they used?
Or typing it into the address bar, for that matter. Why the need to invoke Google?
How do you emulate an 8 inch drive?
Simple, you just reply to some of those emails you ge-- oh, wait. I see now you said "disk" size.

Or you could store "42" in a text file, for a grand total of 3 bytes (including EOF). Now that's progress.
Quantity != quality. Especally on the Internet.
Hey, whatever works for pr0n...
I told them I was using a Touring Machine
Ahhh, I see they've released a portable version then.
If it can duplicate CD's and DVD's, the RIAA are going to be annoyed
The Stone Roses, the Rolling Stones, and Sly & the Family Stone were unavailable for comment.
Vast
As a VAST fan myself, didn't Mr. Crosby put out all of his albums on Elektra (aka Atlantic, owned by AOL/TW)?
support open source music
Oh yeah. This will be the next feel-good hit of the summer.
