Err, real time tactic games are the ones without resources. Sure, war3 required you to micro your guys well, but if they died, you just pump out 50 more from your barracks. Games like the myth series were tactical, you started with units, and got no more new ones for the rest of the game.
Both generas require strategy and tactics to win, but the genera is still RTS for warcraft style and RTT for myth style. Think of calling something tactics meaning "no resource managment".
The only time I ever saw a deathmatch on tv was when flipping around a while ago on g4 maybe. It was boring as hell. It was either tribes or unreal ctf game. I never got into either of those games too much, so I didn't know the map or the weapons. Which means I didn't know what the hell was going on. They would cut to a 3rd person view of some guy fraggin another, then running on. Then would cut to someone running with the flag. The only thing I saw was a random string of fragging clips that made no sense.
This would be really boring on tv to people who don't even know what these games look like, or what the point of th em are.
There are some ways to help that though. The first thing is to slow the game down to maybe half life speed running speed. Quake and unreal are maybe a bit too fast. It's hard to get an eye for where someone is when they cover ground so quickly, and hard to soak up changes when the field moves around so much.
There needs to be an overhead map showing all the teams on at all time. The map has to color code the teams, show who is carrying the flag, and highlight who we are watching. This would be hard to accomplish on maps with multiple floors.
Another thing they could do, is break down the game for us. Let's say that one guy is running back with the flag, some defenders hot on his heels. Ahead of him in a room, defenders have set up an ambush. Just as he gets in the room, the ambush is sprung, and they start firing on the flag carrier.
But out of the corner, some defenders pop out and frag the ambushers, drop down, and stop the other defenders.
On tv coverage, I'd like to see them pause before the flag guy gets into the room, set up the scene by paning around and showing me the situation, the flag guy is running into an ambush. Show the guy run in, tell me it's lights out for the flag guy, showing me an angle where I am behind the ambushers and can see the flag carrier. Then, as the attacker's friends run in, pan up to show them emerge and start shooting and scoring the frags. Let the announcer show me this blow by blow, explaining it the whole way.
This way, I know where they were on the map, watched them set up the play, and can see how well executed it was.
Basically they just need to break it down and explain it, and pause the action to show us split screens from a 3rd person view, and show someone's uncanny aiming ability from first person view, and also show me health and armor values as the fight progresses.
Either way, the game still isn't going to be fun to watch by someone who has never played the game being shown, as you'll only be watching graphics and animation, and won't appreciate the skill of the players.
In athletics, everyone can relate to someone running fast or jumpping high, you can't relate to a great ability to rail someone after seeing them on the screen across the map through a little tiny window for half a second.
I hate medal counts. I thought the olympics were about bringing countries together and sharing a similar culture through sporting events that we all seem to understand.
I don't get out much and don't travel much and don't see that much. I like to take a look at the starting blocks and see that everyone looks the same. A swimmer is a swimmer the world around, no matter what nationality they are from. Same build, same posture, same look and everything.
But please, please don't judge everyone based on their media. I hate our media and can't stand watching tv. The olympics are the most tv i've watched in the past few years (since the last ones), and I don't pay attention to it for the same reasons you state. It's all complete bs. Well, I guess that does represent the majority of people. Oh well.
Make that american commentators don't like the us losing. I was cheering on puerto rico in that basketball game. It was so awesome watching how upset the commentators were getting about it. I made the mistake of thinking it was an elimination game, thinking they were going to be done at the olympics and totally f up their tv schedule. Too bad that wouldn't have happened, it would have been hilarious.
I'm not a "powergamer" I just play more then my friends, or get into a game before them. I usually do end up making new characters. What usually happens is that I end up with 5 mid level characters because I start over with each friend that tries a game, or my friend didn't like his class and started over, so I did too, or sometimes I start over. The end result is me bored of the mid level grind, and not able to experience any high level content, and a friend or two who is sick of playing, as well as myself.
Mid level content is nice and all, but all the new stuff and work gets added on for the high levels, and if you don't have one, it helps it get old faster.
Offline advancment is basically progress quest. Again, it's trying to fix a flawed system.
In an mmorpg, you need to differenciate yourself through looks and then somehow establish that you are better then other people. Or you just want your guy to look cool and kick ass.
I don't mind level grinds, as long as I can progress to a new area with a new skill and technique to use on the next monsters in a timely fashion, I'm still having fun playing.
But really what frusterates me about these games (besides the 15 a month AND expansion prices) is the problem with playing with people. Every game they say it is designed to be played with other people and force interaction. Great. I want to play with my friends. Too bad, you are level 30, they are just starting, you can't play together unless your friend plays by himself for a month.
I tried for a time to get into the achaea mud. This was my first mud, but I relized that to do it, I had to pay even less attention to the real world around me then in the graphical games. The scrolling text takes a lot of attention to read.
Anyway, they had some really interesting concepts there. The first of which is the status based pvp system. I didn't get far enough to really do anything in the game, but i read enough about it to get a feel for how it works. But there were a ton of status effects to inflict on people and a ton of ways to cure them. The way to kill someone off was to basically lock their status effects in such a way that they couldn't cure themselves and died from poison or something like that.
So a pvp system like that would make a phenominal game. But then some people hate pvp and don't want to have anything to do with it.
Another thing to implement, is to remove levels entirely. I get in the game, and I'm at max power. Basically I jump into everquest at level 65 or whatever the max is. Sort of like I bought a character on ebay. Except the game is massive, because all the content was designed around the idea that you have powerd up characters. Give me some skill points to allocate in the beginning to define a unique class or unique powers. Give me a lot of options for race and body type so I can look unique.
Make the game about aquiring items. Make the game in such a way that to get items, it takes a lot of work. I want a troll hat. I have to go get the keys from the 4 surrounding goblin cheifs to get into the troll layer where I can get the troll hat. When I get the troll hat, it looks cool, and I can parade around with my badass troll hat.
Give everyone a keyring that keeps track of areas they have unlocked. My avatar only has 3 of the 4 keys, the rest of my party has 4, but we need to get the 4th key for myself. But that's ok, because it's fun killing guys, and I don't ever see experience points anywhere. Give a way to change your class/skills, but make it take a long time.
Basically I want a sandbox where I can try everything out. My reward to show how long i've been playing are cool looking powerful item. Maybe I can win the look of an item, then I can go capture spirits of monsters to put in to the item to give it unique powers.
The thing that keeps me coming back to the mmorpgs are the fun of killing and exploring and interacting with people and improving my avatar. So why limit content and who I can play with and what skills I can use? Why don't you just give us all content that everybody can do, that is challenging and will require a group, and I can start playing with friends immediatly and forever.
Just make sure that everythings challenging enough to do that you won't blow through it all in 40 hours.
Your definition of "having a life" might not match up with their definition. Could the world grow up and stop acting like high school? Are your teachers happy? If so, WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? Not everybody want's or needs the same thing out of life that you do. I wish people could start understanding this.
Maybe except for taking care of kids full time (they go to school in 5 years), if you aren't doing a side buisness, that is being a bum. I don't care if you are male or female.
If you sit around the house all day while your partner is out spending 40 hours a week of his life working so you can afford food and rent/mortgage, that's complete bs. Homemaker isnt a job. Oh my god, you had to sign for a package, then load the dishwasher and put them away. YOUR LIFE IS SO TOUGH! Please.
All that cleaning stuff could take no more then an hour or two a day, max. Meanwhile, you get the rest of your day to do whatever you want. Freedom. I sure would like that.
Again, if you are raising a child, that's a different story, and can probably be more difficult then most jobs.
But seriously, unless you are doing something to help out with paying the bills, your a bum taking a free ride, regardless of gender.
Seriously. It doesn't have to do with just being attractive or what not. Who you know matters. Who you are friends with matters. That's the way the world works! We are lienent towards our buddies and people we like and respect, we are hardcore bastards to people we don't like or are indifferent about.
Friends and the people who like you are what matter most!
If you were at a bar or something like that, I could see that happening. Some guy's team just won a huge victory. He jovily comes up to a total stranger with a free drink "Have a beer mother f****r!!!" as he presses the glass into your hand with a big grin, then turns and excitedly darts off to get more beers to hand out.
Sorta streching it, but it could happen in a way that makes you laugh, rather then upsets you.
Where do people get off thinking they are smarter then everyone else? I hate that. So you are able to see that it's a video game, and, oh my god, not real life?! Only you are capable of determining that having acne and glasses doesn't make you smart? Only you are capable of relizing that there could be evil commies in another country who just want to get food, have some sex, and live their lives, and don't care about politics? Only you? Because, if this game shows me that black people are evil criminals, only you are capable of seeing the truth. The unwashed masses are too stupid to understand that it's a video game and not real.
By the way, has anybody played this game yet? I mean at liest wait until the fucking game is released before everyone starts bitching. I told all my friends "I cant wait for it, cause the lead guy is black, there's going to be a shitload of people crying racist". Here's the first one.
Can we repeate after me everybody... video game. V I D E O G A M E. It's realistic you say? It is? YEah, I get loading screens when I drive over bridges in real life. I also see cops ramming the crap out of guys car jacking other people all the time. He usually blows up in an inferno and gets up later.
I mean, damn, I've playd racing sims, flight sims, sub sims, destroyer sims, pt boat sims and got knows whatever else sims. Those are wayyyyyyyyyyy more realistic then gta could ever be, and you kno what? I still know I can't drive an f1 car, or man a sub.
IT IS A GAME. The characters are going to be made to be a stereo in order to be over the top, on purpose.
What's with you people? Everytime I decide to to shade a character black, I have to make him a super intelligent guy? I created the character, I can make him however I want. If you don't like it, don't buy the game.
Well whatever, I'm too stupid to know that the character in the video game isn't how every person who's black is going to behave.
Why can't I associate gang like behavior in low income inner city house with, gang behavior in low income inner city housing? Why do I have to think that every black person I see is that way? What the hell? There's plenty of white people who act that same way who live in the same situation.
Whatever, I don't care, I'm just feeding the trolls and the article trolls. Fucking video game that's not out. Trolls to the max.
Maybe your memory cards are full? I haven't played ALL the rpgs out there, but a good many have multiple save slots. Not in the sense of zelda, but you start a new game, then when you save, you select the second slot instead of saving over the already started game... Sort of like on the pc, same deal. Which games havent allowed you to do that? If they do it and only allow one save slot, they have serious design issues.
How about being proud of not releasing the game bundled with protection software taht won't let me run the game because I'm running emulation software? Why don't you guys come to my house first and make sure I'm wearing clean underware before letting me start the game? What buisness of yours is it that I run legal software on my computer so I can keep back ups of my games?
I obliged though, I wanted to play your game. I even went as far as uninstalling daemon tools, and it still wouldnt start?
Why do I have to download a no cd patch to play the retail version of the game? Why would you do that? Why are you proud of that?
At liest you made pretty shadows. You did a really good job there at liest. But in about 20 years of gaming, I havent seen such complete crap ever, when trying to run a game. Never, ever, ever ever. I guess that's something to be proud of...
Same problem. Disabled daemon, even tried uninstalling daemon tools (which is annoying, since daemon tools are a fantastic piece of software, while doom is a pos).
I finally had to get the crack to run it. I didn't want to have to deal with that shit. I'd like to thank activision for reminding me again while I'll never purchase another pc game again. Thanks activision, you are going to save me a shit load of cash.
So let me get this straight. The argument is that the game gives the killers ideas on how to murder their victems and should be banned. Otherwise, they would have killed the victem in a more traditional way?
Why don't we ban the news, everyday I turn it on and I see how someone kidnapped some 16 year old and raped and killed her, or how some people left their kid in a dumpster, or how some woman drove all her kids off a bridge in the family car. I never thought of that, I can mass kill my family by telling them we are taking a rode trip, then pushing them off a bridge! I can get rid of my kid by leaving him in the trash rather then facing embarassment at an abortion clinic!
Get this slashdoters, YOU CAN HAVE SEX WITH A HOT 16 year old! All you have to do is kidnap and have your way with her, THEN THROW HER IN THE WOODS WHEN YOU ARE DONE!!! AMAZING!
To think, I would have never come up with any of these things if I hadn't watched the news. They gave me all these great ideas for crimes. THANK YOU NEWS 11!
I don't get what makes it an adventure game. An adventure game to me is sam and max or monkey island. As far as I know, rpg games are roll playing games, meaning, you play a roll, with some stats.
KOTOR has a shallow feature to let you help or kill everything. I fail to see how this somehow makes it a better rpg game? The combat system in kotor is baldurs gate ad&d translated to star wars. Nothing creative. Final fantasy comes out with a new scheme with every game. Usually with a bit more depth. In KOTOR I just use speed, jump, and destroy everything, then get free force heals. At liest it looked cool.
They are different types of rpg games. Final fantasy is the product of consol rpg games, and sticks to the consol style rpg. KOTOR is the product of computer rpg games, and reflects those styles. Both are great games, but both are RPG games. Role playing... you play a role, get it? RPG doesn't mean flexability to kill everything on the map, that's a feature.
I think people need to just love games, and not get all pissed off when a game they don't like is popular and has the audacity to get classified in MY GENERA!!
Games are good, varying features are good. Don't get all mad that both games are RPGs.
Seriously. When you have a lan party with 7 people, that's 7x50 dollars it will cost you to play together. I don't understand why they don't make spawn installs like warcraft 2 had. This way, everyone can play at a lan party without much hastle. Most consol games allow 4 people to play at the same time with only one game, why is it pc games only allow one player?
Games are expensive. I pay for a review site (gamespot) to help me weed out what games are going to suck. Usually i read the reviews with a grain of salt, then look at the movies and screenshots to get the final verdict. I've played enough games that reading the features and watching a video of it in action will tell me if I want to play the game or not.
That said, I can't afford to play everything that I want. I have to pick and choose which games I want to buy. This means waiting for the best of the best, or a genera that I have a particular liking too. I would in on way buy all those "decent, but nothing special", games. Never, not even when they have been out for 2 years. These are the games I'll download. If for some, very, very, very strange reason I truely enjoy the game after downloading it, I'll buy it. But this has yet to happen.
So I buy the good stuff, and if I can't afford all the good stuff, I wait until the price drops. For all the average stuff, I download it and play it, but otherwise I could be perfectly happy never having spent 50 dollars to spend one night playing them.
What i meant was the, and i'm not sure on the word for it, machina? Basically the fantasy setting with machines and swords. This was a strictly sci fi plot with some magic thrown in. I didn't see any pointy hair or sword swinging heros.
It was a light themed final fantasy. World destroying, gaea, worlds with spirits. Great, that's like every other fantasy and sci fi theme out there. I guess it's hard to describe, or I don't want to spend time trying to do it, but if you examine the look of the world in the games vs the look of the world in the movie, you should at liest see the difference. When I get into a final fantasy game, I feel like i'm playing a final fantasy game. When I look at a final fantasy cgi, I feel like it's a final fantasy cgi. When I watched the movie, i had to struggle to feel the connection. It was there, but just very subtle.
By the way, I own and really do enjoy the movie, and didn't mean to be putting it down. I just felt they would have better taken a risk on a movie like that with one that was themed like their successful games, rather then something completly new.
What I don't understand is why they made the movie so different from final fantasy games. I mean, they had some similar type plot things going on, had a cid, and all that, but why the sci fi all of a sudden? If they had just done it in the style of the final fantasy games, it probably would have done loads better. Well, maybe not, I don't know if mainstream usa is ready for final fantasy yet. Actually, I hope it never does. If that happens, it'll be as bad as watching ring wraiths chasing a mcdonalds happy meal down the road.
100% correct about eating disorders having to do with lack of control. I guess when you examine it more, the control word can just turn into a meaningless buzzword.
If you ever had any intrest in wondering why an 80 pound girl would feel fat, I would suggest taking a look at a book called "Wasted" by Marya Hornbacher. It's an autobiography that details her very destructive life as an anoretic and bulimic. It skips out on the clinical approach, and has a very hard hitting, personal description of the disease and how it effects people.
Also, for a great online source for support and information about eating disorders, visit something-fishy.org.
I got the original meaning. It's pretty clear that she meant she can look at the pictures without an erection and encompass the other aspects of the magazine.
I found it slightly offensive that she thought men were unable to look at nude photos objectivly without over focusing on the women. I guess I just wanted to show that you can over generalize how women look at photos of models too.
I finally got the article to load and read it. Funny the author had issues with devil may cry. Whatever difficulties he had must be from lack of experience. I managed to play through games like alone in the dark and estatica, so perhaps it was just easier for me to deal with the fixed camera angles like that.
Although you have to worry about off screen enemy hits, the camera angles like that really lend itself to a better atmosphere for the game.
Err, real time tactic games are the ones without resources. Sure, war3 required you to micro your guys well, but if they died, you just pump out 50 more from your barracks. Games like the myth series were tactical, you started with units, and got no more new ones for the rest of the game.

I'd put your money on Walsh and May. Do they ever lose? :)

Hollywood? Try walking around in newark nj for a day...
