I think the gp's point was that when you got found out for the behavior, the victim company could do horrible bad things to you. Especially if they can prove malicious intent, they can pierce the corprate veil.
Prepped for a week on the Consitution by whom? Wouldn't that create another elite with less accountability and more variablility based on who has the presidency?
"Yes, the consitution says we have the right to deprive anyone of their freedom whenever we want."
Yeah, great idea. Oh, and the Supreme Court doesn't have supreme power. You still have Constitutional amedments and open rebellion as options. Unfortunately(or fortunately depending on how you look at it) both can take your life. Amendments through the amount of time they take to get enacted, and open rebelion in the obvious manner.
Not exactly. Physical keys are not protected by the 5th amendment. Thats because they are physical and the goverment can demand anything physical from you through due process. But encryption keys tend to be knoledge. Meaning something you know and that is the basis of any testimony. The police/procecutor/etc. asks you a question about something you have knowledge of and you answer. Thats what the 5th amendment gives you protection against.
In fact, I believe that if your door is locked by a key code that you memorized, then the police can't make you tell them the code. They can break the door down to gain access, and in the same way they can break the encryption, but they can't force you to tell them something. Same reason why the police can't make you tell them where the dead body is.
In other news, ALL fundamentalists have been found to have a much higher incidence of prefruntal brain damage. This includes liberal fundamentalists found prevalently on slashdot.
I do believe you are wrong. I don't think the police or anyone can compelle you to give them encryption keys. Since they are not physical, but knowledge based, you "giving" them the keys is actually you testifying. The 5th amendment protects you from them forcing you to testify.
So in the end if they can't keep you in jail till you give them the keys. Also, the RIAA surely can't make you tell them.
See, the problem was that some Debian Developer packaged Hell(tm) for Debian and it some how got into Sarge. Then when Debian went to freeze Sarge, they ran into the age old problem of trying to freeze Hell(tm). I knew the smart people in Debian would eventually over come the difficulties of freezing Hell(tm), I'm just glad they were able to accomplish it finally.
Stop being so concieted. The universe exists with or without you. The universe was here before you were born and it will continue to be here after you are dead and gone. Deal with it.
First, don't man dpkg, use aptitude. Its much better and all graphical like. Also don't enable "metaverse" its called "multiverse" and packages in multiverse and universe are unsupported so if you want an extremely stable desktop only use main, though universe is maintained by the Masters of the Universe group on the outskirts of Ubuntu, so its pretty safe.
Other than that, Ubuntu is great, Ive been using it since preview warty and I'm changing my sources.list to point to breezy today.
Yeah apple actually tells people to do this as soon as you get your laptop(mine is an iBook G4). They call it calibrating the battery or some such. They also tell you to do it if your charge isn't lasting as long as it used to. Its a pretty neat trick and it makes sense.
First, let me point out that Jabber already allows communications between both clients. But the problem is that the messages to your AIM buddies still go over the AIM network and are still subject to these TOS. So that sucks. Also if you think Microsoft won't go to TOS like this at some point in time you are nieve. And thats not just because they are microsoft. Its cause it is a corporation and will tend toward this sort of behavior till the government and/or the people put a stop to it.
Also Jabber is better cause it nativly goes over the network encrypted, and its decentralized nature. Aka, the university csee department that I work for is trying to put up a jabber server for its students. Also one of my friends that I trust runs one. I have many avenues for using Jabber that don't include a corporation in the mix and where I don't have to worrry about eavesdropping. So switch all your friends to Jabber. I'm already doing it. Why aren't you?
(Btw, there is a lovely windows Jabber client called exodus or some such. I recommend it to all my friends.)
Check out libsasl, libsasl2, libgsasl. They have the nessisary parts to do that. Though that may only be for servers. You may have to use the kerberos libraries. I've not done it, but that looks like a good place to start.
They have removed the distortion, but the commercial variants still have restrictions set on what altitude they will report position at and what velocities they will report. Last time I checked it was around 60kft and 500 knots, but I may be wrong on that account.
Yes, there is a research proposal on the subject of creating a compatibility layer to run Linux drivers directly in HURD user-space. They are actually thinking about making that the default or using OS-kit or making their own driver infrustructure. I think in the end youll see both the Linux drivers and the OS-kit drivers with OS-kit being the perfered. But this is all from memory and I'm too lazy to look it up.
Yeah I love D-I and I have been a Debian user since the days of potato, but for your g3, maybe you should look at Ubuntu (ubuntulinux.org). Its Debian based and it even uses D-I. I am currently using it on my ibookg4 and I love it. I still use Debian on the server, but for the desktop Ubuntu has it already done.
Even better, Debian often sabotages config files to force the admin to spend at least a little time looking at a config file before firing up some daemon.
Actually I would not call it sabotage as I usually see a good default config file that will work for most people. What I am seeing more and more are files in/etc/default that have a simple variable that needs to be defined and set to 1 otherwise the/etc/init.d/{service} script will refuse to start the service. This is very cool because it forces the admin to set the variable and maybe even read a bit before the service will ever be started. I am looking forward to all services getting switched over to this type of setup.
I really do love people who assume there is science behind the creationist view point. Here is a good articlehttp://www.icr.org/pubs/btg-a/btg-191a.htm on the subject. So to answer your false view point, there is plenty of science behind creation if you don't take the word of your highschool biology teacher and do some actual research for yourself.
I do love this second paragraph of yours. Its full of even more falisies of argument than your first. First you take what I said and turn it around into exaclt what I was saying shouldn't happen. There are many good books that show the science behind creation(and yes I said science cause there is scientific support for it). Your "creation's explanation" shows a deeply flawed understanding and also shows that you have done very little to no research into the subject and have just blindly accepted what others have incorrectly told you. If you had done any research you would have seen that true creationist scientists have many good arguments for why creation happened and evolution could not have happened.
So yes, both are theories becaseu you can't go back and see exactly what happened and no one has come up with conclusive evidence to either side.
As for your comment about quantum mechanics? HUH? What does that have to do with anything at hand? Nice try at confusing the subject and insinuating that creationist science or Christianity has anything against quantum mechanics. I do love people who think that having religion precludes science. Exspecially Christianity. Christianity has helped science in so many ways be removing the pagan belief that "the gods" control everything and its there cause a god did it. No, many christian scientists study science because they want to learn more about God's creation. I have never heard a christian scientist say that it is just because God did it and we don't have to understand why. Most of them say God did it for a reason and I want to know why.
Go and read the linked article before you come back and try to say that creationism is not based on true science because it is. Just as much as evolution is a theory, same is creation and both require a certain amount of faith to believe because we have yet to prove either.
And as for state promoting religion, there are many creationists who are also agnostics and believe that there must be a god/gods that created this and they just don't know who that god is. You don't even have to say a god. An intelegent force ussually works. The fact is that niether evolution nor creation has been proven as fact and the students should be shown that and encouraged to do research on their own to find out what they believe to be the truth.
So, by your logic then you should not be allowed to vote because you are trying to force your beliefs that people who hold religious beliefs should not be allowed to vote.
What you seem to be missing is that voting IS forcing your beliefs on others and yourself, except under a democracy, at least in theory, everyone has the same amount of power to force their will on everyone else. So the side with the most power on the current issue wins out. The key here is that the founding fathers hoped to so fragment the power that you had to compromise to get your side to win out.
So, please stop your high and mighty arogance and recognize that everyone has views that they are attempting to force on to others and FREEDOM is this equality of power with everyone else in the nation. Which, btw, is why I want this damned 2 party system needs to end and also get rid of all the corprate influence. Democracy isn't in trouble from some religious right trying to force its views on everyone else. It is this two party system where both parties are corrupted by bribes(camaign contributions).
Off topic rants always sway opinions.....
Offtopic how? Yes, maybe rant like but very much on topic. You said that a democracy had been bought and made a comment about a theocracy that was very much an insinuation. You opened the door.
Nowhere did I say the "moral majority" were "stupid" by any standard. Nor did I call any of them bigots. Maybe you want to reply to a thread a little more in tune with your inferiority complex?
No, I never said you called anyone else a bigot nor did I ever call anyone else a bigot, I was just relating a skit I saw on SNL that I thought was very poinant.
My tongue-in-cheek comment... was poking fun at how the seperation of church and state has blurred considerably under this administration.
I love people who think that the seperation of church and state means that those with religious beliefs may not participate. Go back and reread my original comment because you obviously did not get the point. And let me add this, seperation of church and state mean that the state may not establish a religion.
We're seeing more public schools teaching religion as science, funds being cut to programs that are not in total agreement with some religious standards, and...
So, I take it your talking about the evolution vs. creation debate. Well both of them are THEORIES as far as science is concerned as niether can be proved and both have large amounts of support. I think both should be taught to give a more balanced education and teach students to do research and descide for themselves instead of assuming whatever their teacher says is automatically truth. As for the cutting funding for certain "programs"(meaning embyronic stem cell research) maybe instead of eating whatever the media feeds you, you could go out and do some research and findout for yourself that ebryonic stem cell research is far more dangerous and less promising than adult and umbilical cord stem cells and much of the drive for embryonic stem cell research is from big corporations looking to find some way to make more money from it than they could from the other two more promising types. Also you should consider that some believe this is killing one human to save another and also tantamount to the Nazi research on humans durring WWII. You obviously want to discount the beliefs of others just because they are based upon some religion. As for the judge, it depends on the municipality and if the judges are allowed to wear what they want of if there is a dress code or uniform.
I just want to say that you have proven me right, your entire post smacks of arogance and thinking I'm a member of the religious right and saying I have some kind of "inferiority complex." Oh, and maybe I was being to subtle about knowing your comment was tounge and cheek by mentioning the truth of satire in my comment? Why don't you get off of yourself and actually be open minded instead of being so intolerant yourself? Let me just finish with two words. "Plank Eye"
I feel the need to respond to this comment and all others who seem to say that it is wrong for anyone to vote with their religion.
What I keep hearing is that all those people who voted for Bush on election day based on their religious beliefs are idiots and stupid and in some cases I hear that they don't even deserve their vote/life(yes I have heard people advocate death for the "Moral Majority"). In anycase, I was watching SNL tonight and there was this lovely skit/cartoon where Santa descided that he would no longer deliver presents to the "Red States" because they were now part of "DumbAssinstan" or somesuch. It ended with a little girl calling Santa a bigot because he was saying that all these people were idiots just cause they let a little thing like religion influence them. She also said that Santa was becoming the very thing that he hated. I must say that I love the truth of satire.
Now, just in case I have not yet made my point, let me just make a few more observations. Everyone who sits there and says that the religious right is automatically stupid and should not be allowed to vote is basically saying that someone is automatically stupid and should be disallowed the right to vote because of their skin color, because they hold a certain job, or because they happen to read slashdot(well this last one might be true). Democracy is about the citizens taking and _ALL_ their beliefs and trying to form a moderate goverment that is as best as it can be for entire country. Now some may believe that the current goverment is not best or optimal or whatever. The majority of the nation has spoken and there must be a reason for it. Now it may be through voter fraud, but from talking to actual people I can tell you there is a reason that the Democratic party and the majority of the "left" is completely missing. Stop making excuses and figure out why a nation would vote for someone they know lied to them outright(Well I think we did it twice, Clinton and Bush but thats irrelavant).
For those still hung up on all the alleged voter fraud, let me leave this last nugget of truth with you. The Democratic party has a much longer and more worrisome record of voter fraud and all out vote buying than the Republican party ever could. In West Virginia there is a saying that goes something like this, "When I die, bury me in Logan County so even after I am dead I can still vote." Now the funny thing is, historically the Democrats have always done better amoung the dead getting nearly 100% of their vote. So isn't all of this a little bit of the pot calling the kettle black?
I personally think both parties are dirty and need to be destroyed. A little revolt now and again can be healthy. Also don't dilute yourself by thinking that the parties are all that different, they both have the same corpreate masters.
No again, your wrong here. The Congress is a creation of the people, the Executive(the president) is a creation of the states and Congress. I don't know where people got the idea that the President was a servant of the people, because it is plainly false if you read the Constitution and the liturature put out at the time. The office of the President was created to simply execute the laws created by Congress and protect the states from eachother. The Congress is elected by the people. You have to remember something, the purpose of the Consitution was to take the powerand fragment it into as many hands as possible and the electoral college is a part of that system that keeps things balanced and prevents tyrany. It would be a very bad idea to get rid of it, but as I told my friend last night when we were discussing this, do it yourself, you have the tools, I just will warn you that it will probably take your life time to make that change, but again, that is what the founding fathers intended. If its not important enough to spend your life time doing, then its not important enough to force your view point on the country for the next 100 years or more.
The American Democracy is a interesting and beautiful beast.
I think he probably realized that, or possibly would have called them 3rd world at the very least. I think the gp was refering to the appauling conditions of famine and backwardness. So there fore they got the 4th world... meaning the 3rd world feels sorry for them(poorest of the poorest of the poorest). But then again I havnt slept yet and its 7am so I could just be delirious.
"The 2-party system has to be changed before someone not in one of the two major political parties can win, but the system won't change unless something major happens to shake it up... like a third-party candidate winning."
Umm... that has already happened... how do you think we got the Republican party? Anyone remember a stricking young republican named Abraham Lincoln?
How is that not objective? Ive heard things on Fox News that were blatantly biased so I know it exists, but how is that biased? Ive heard many times where CNN and the rest of the news outlets have quoted from Bill Clinton, Kerry, and Gore to describe things. People do it all the time. Especially to give things a frame of reference.
In response to all this other stuff, my parents believe that CNN is strongly biased for the far left. Why they believe that is not at issue. What I want to point out is what they do because of it. They don't go out and make a movie about it or bitch about it on the internet. They simply don't watch it. You have to remember something, these are TV networks. They are generally brought to you by your cable company and if the channel is not being watched, the cable company will more likely than not, drop it. So stop bitching about biased news(its all biased, its just harder to see bias when its biased to your side) just stop watching it.
And note, I said stop bitching, intelegent debates and conversations are alright. But truly all that I see coming from the left these days is bitching. Before Fahrenheit 9/11 I would have said that I was firmly undescided about who I was going to vote for with a strong possibility that I was going to vote for Kerry, but after seeing that atrocious pack of lies, Im pretty sure Im going to vote for Bush just to cheese off Moore and all his chronies. That is of course if Bush doesn't piss me off anymore than he already has.
One parting thought, I would rather have an idiot controled by greedy men in office than a bunch of self-righteous, eletist bastards because the idiot and his greedy men are much more predictable and can only screw the country so much before people kick them out. Also, please note I am not a Republican nor a Democrat. I am a capitalistic, democratic American.

"The 2-party system has to be changed before someone not in one of the two major political parties can win, but the system won't change unless something major happens to shake it up ... like a third-party candidate winning."
Umm... that has already happened... how do you think we got the Republican party?
Sorry for the rant but I had to get that out.
