    Intel Marketing is great, I LOVE IT

    to them , 64 bits means:

    1 - the internet is faster

    2 - Increased productivity in office applications (I guess since the fanfarre at the end of freecell, etc, is going to play faster, you'll have more time to have a chat w/ Office Assistant)

    3 - Oh yeah, ans MS Projects wastes several CPU cycles with that new blue skin of theirs, so MS Project will be faster, yay!

    And never mind you won't type stuff faster with a faster processor...

    But anyway, you could try and show them a simple Python program, or something like it

    Python is fairly easy and pretty much "BASIC" like. You could walk them thru the construction of a Python program (something that calculates your age based on your bithdate or something)

    www.python.org has all you need.

    Sometimes I feel Open Source stuff is even more bloated than their Closed Source counterparts...

    I have a machine at work that struggles to run XFCE with only 256Mb of memory.

    Windows XP runs fine with that... I know, I know, security sucks, blah, blah, but!

    Open Source used to be pretty good at reducing bloat, but nowadays...

    you've got to be kidding me!

    Then use what many in the high performance compupting field do: Fortran.

    Because they are too lazy to learn a REAL programming language. Like C.


    There is at least one advanced C++ development project I know of that has Fortran as its core deep in the bowels of the FFT routines... for efficiency reasons. It's just plain faster.


    Maybe because you are using the Intel compiler, that chews Fortran and spills highly optimized code. But sorry, you CAN'T beat hand optimization using ASM/Intrinsics in C++ for FFT (or any other kind of code)> just read the bloody Intel manuals!


    Plus, how many buffer overflow exploits have you seen recently on Fortran programs? :-)

    Second - good balance between HTML, Flash, dynamic pages - What if the browser doesn't have Flash installed? Is the Web Site usable (or useless)??

    Check! WIndows XP and 2000 both have it.

    It should allow you to easily install Windows on a separate partition from your data.

    Just did it last week!

    Then you can keep /home on a separate partition, /var on a sep..

    It's called "Documents and Settings"

    Here's why I like Mono

    1 - GTK plainly sucks for development. No, really, I tried, and it's worse than MFC.

    2 - Windows.Form is THE thing that will allow true Linux WIndows portability. And it's a good widget library.

    3 - .NET is better than Java in my opinion.

    How do Microsoft expect to compete with Linux (or even pirate "versions" of Windows)when, in a country like Brazil, people have to pay $220 for Windows XP Home (and even more for the professional edition)

    That's twice as expensive as in the US (and actually something like 5x more expensive if we account for all the factors)
