If, in the midst of its 16-day flight, wing damage had been found to be dire, the only potential -- but still unlikely -- option would have been the formulation over several days by Mission Control of a profile that could have, perhaps, reduced heating on the damaged wing at the expense of the other wing for an unguided reentry, with scant hope the vehicle would remain controllable to about 40,000 ft., allowing for crew bailout over an ocean.
Looks like that option would've been extremely risky even if damage had been noticed.

Remember, it's still very possible that a meteoroid hit the wing during the spaceflight maybe even early in the re-entry.

My guess is that about 20% of Win 95 users have broadband.

What you're trying to claim is that if we did a detailed statistical analysis that there would be a correlation between one category and another. I don't doubt a correlation may occur. However, on the level at which we're looking at these stats, it would all even out. One correlation would work in favor of increasing the potential market. Possibly the Win95 users with broadband connections, but another would go the other way, like Linux and Broadband (more geeks use Linux, more geeks get broadband.) However, both you and I are making up these correlations so they're both invalid.

    Statistic update:
Win 95 use is lower than I thought at 7%, but I left out NT use 5%, Mac use is 4%, Linux 1%, and Other is 1%. This is from users accessing google. So, the 75% becomes 82% and our overall % becomes about 8%. Oh, wait it didn't change.

Operating Systems will be irrelevant when people stop wanting more power from the computers. Has this even begun to happen? The features that people care about most that get into the Linux kernel are the ones with comments like, "performance increased by x%" (could be just me). Microsoft still uses generic features, like "runs programs faster". So even the non-techies at which Dr. G's article was targeted care about the OS even if they don't realize it.
